Dave Gettleman’s Pre-Draft Press Conference - ( New Window )
...

The back and forth Q&A about drafting a QB with the 2nd 1st round pick that DG might not love—reads like an awkward exchange. Wonder if it was as awkward on video.
Yup

Thick ones
Some of most telling quotes
Giantz_comeback : 4/18/2019 5:41 pm : link
We have more players rated as first, second, and third, and fourth round values that I’ve had in any of my drafts as a general manager," Gettleman said.

The Giants view the following positions as the deepest in the 2019 class: wide receiver, offensive tackle, cornerback, and safety

"The wides (wide receivers), the offensvive tackles, Your secondary is thick -- you know -- thankfully, corners and safeties." Gettleman said when asked about the depth of this draft class. "When I say thick I’m talking about up and down the board, rounds 1-7, there are a lot of players."

"We had three games where if we made a (defensive) stop we’re 7-1 in the second half," Gettleman said. "You can’t have too many defensive playmakers. If you look at the great defenses they have a lead dog at every level -- a legitimate playmaker at each level of the defense."

The Giants expect a blue-chip prospect to fall to them with their second of two first-round draft picks.

"With as heavy as this draft is, if we’re at 17, I’m surprised if there is someone there I did not like," Gettleman said.

Could that player be a quarterback?

"If we have a quarterback rated in the first round, we love him," Gettleman added.

“Don’t forget about Kyle now," Gettleman said. "He’s working right now. You’d hate to take a young kid and just throw him in."

Having 12 picks is crazy," Gettleman said. "You don’t want to draft a player you’re going to have to cut."

----

"I traded up a number of times at Carolina," Gettleman said. "Last year, we kind of had to sit. We only had the five picks. I was not going to take picks from this year’s draft to move up in last year’s draft. We’re going to do what we need."

When asked if he has the flexibility to move around, Gettleman responded with a definitive "absolutely" statement.

This was one of the more worthwhile watches of a DG presser

since he has been in the seat as GM, in my opinion. Thought he handled the questioning quite well.

looking forward to this draft, and beyond.
The media keeps trying to force him ....
Manny in CA : 4/18/2019 7:27 pm : link

To say he's going QB. Even if he 's going to do it, he's not goin to show his hand.

Posted this on another thread but it mostly belongs here...

I think it's interesting Gettleman used the exact words to describe what he wanted in a QB that Steve Keim recently used to describe Josh Rosen (emphasis mine)...
Quote:

“We’ve had good dialogue. He is a pro’s pro, and the one thing I have appreciated about him the most since we drafted him is he has an unbelievable amount of mental toughness.”

It's as if Gettleman was listening to the interview and the words stuck in his head.

#2 Last year, when he made the "gold jacket" statement, he was basically telling everybody he wanted Barkley.

#3 I wouldn't be surprised if the sells-out and devotes the ENTIRE draft on fixing the defense

#4 Last year, he only had five picks, this year he has a lot more. He telling everybody in the NFL - "we're open for business, I want to move up"

to me...this was the KEY quote....

Q: When you look at this draft, is there a chance you get to six and all of these top stud defensive players are gone?

A: A chance that they are all gone? No.

absolutely - Tate does a great interview
I don't know what it about this guy but,

I love that he is our GM. Seems very No-nonsense anti-Reese.

I could never understand what Reese was trying to say even after he said it.

Go Dave ... !
It was a great interview
hitdog42 : 4/18/2019 10:24 pm : link
Minus his attempt again to tell us we got good qb play again last year

We went into last season with Eli and thought he had plenty left. He proved that. We will just see how it goes.
My take on Gettlmen drafting a QB,
KeoweeFan : 4/18/2019 10:40 pm : link
while reading between the lines of this and other interviews, is that the NYG (specifically Shurmur and Gettleman) most value a QB who is NOT touted as a first rounder.

They see him as somewhat raw, but with long range potential above this year's "elite" (which they find lacking for a number of reasons).

They are counting on Eli to be effective for a year or two and with the QB whisperer develop that player into someone who will carry the NYG for a long time.

I'm not expert enough to guess who that player is, but I am just trying to channel DG.

I'm not sure what part of Reese's history of interviews would indicate that he's "pro-nonsense".

Gettleman has the salesman part of this job down though. I'm not sure what you got out of this interview, but he's good at using a lot of words to say nothing of significance.

No GM is going to give you his real thoughts with a draft coming up in less than two weeks. The only thing you should take seriously is what he said a few weeks ago. It's not his job to tell the fans what he's doing.
I must be missing something

Yup. Now I will take what jtgiants and JonC have been saying all along - they have 5-6 impact defenders identified at the top of this draft, and apparently a gang of red chip defenders as well.

And they are happy enough to ride into 2019 with Eli and Lauletta or another mid-late round QB for developmental purposes behind Eli.

They have some guys very high on their board it seems. Oliver's character stuff may have him lower than we think. Sweat? Burns? I think Q.Will is in a tier by himself. If he gets past Niners I think we try with oak or hope he falls to us.
The key to our draft believe it or not is what NY Jets do
Rjanyg : 4/19/2019 8:08 am : link
Dave Te said in his podcast that NY Jets want to move back, get some picks and select Brian Burns OLB Fl St. to me that means that Josh Allen could drop and be available and I would love that pick.

Top 6 defensive players are: Q Will, Bosa, Allen, White, Oliver, Sweat.

One of these players will be a Giant!

Are there good quarterbacks in this draft?
joeinpa : 4/19/2019 9:24 am : link
Gettleman, “There are several good quarterbacks in this draft. “

Combined with his belief that his most important job is to find the next guy and that he would like the guy to sit behind Eli, I am now convinced he’s going quarterback.

Just glad the draft is less than a week away myself.

Here you go Mike
Golden Tate presser - ( New Window )
For better or worse, there’s not any misdirection with this group
UberAlias : 4/19/2019 10:21 am : link
He lays out the approach and they’ll follow it. The only thing to speculate on is what their draft board looks like.

A few things:
I think it’s clear Rosen is not in play and you don’t need to listen long to get your answer for why. So those of you still ignoring JT and JonC and think Rosen is too talented to pass up at a discount price, you already have your answer for why they’re going to pass.

For those of you with mindset that if you like a QB you have to go get him at 6 —you need to start accepting that is not how this team thinks. Right or wrong, QB is just another position in their eyes and they draft on value. Better get used to it. They’re going to get a good player on D at 6 but they might just miss out on one of their gold jacket guys. This is where I wish the team was capable of misinformation. NYG could easily convince the league they’re hot for QB to help force someone to deal up and push a top tier player on D down. Maybe if their guy is not there they might get offers from a team looking to deal up for a QB, but I doubt they would act on it.

The team will trade at some point. They aren’t making 12 picks.

That's Classic!!
I would think
Gman11 : 4/19/2019 11:02 am : link
Gettleman can't quote about Rosen because it would be tampering.
There is one more possibility regarding DG's answer to
BlueLou'sBack : 4/19/2019 11:12 am : link
the question about a top tier defender being still available at 6... that could NOT indicate that the Giants' have their locked in on a defender at 6.

It's a long shot but what if DG thinks there's sure to be an impact defender at 17, like Wilkins or Ferrel or Lawrence?

Then he could nab a QB of choice at 6, and still get an "impact" defender at 17.

I have no idea what his intentions are anymore, frankly.
I am thinking there will be a trade down

Q: So a QB is not its own special category?
A: No, it is not.

Really?

I wonder what Andy Reid would say about trading up to get Mahomes. Or Howie Roseman trading to get Wentz. Or Ernie trading to get Eli? Or Snead trading to get Goff?

Etc.
