Pat Leonard:'Lauletta, Gettlemanís bust 2018 4th-round pick'

sphinx : 4/18/2019 5:35 pm
Is a 4th round pick a "bust"?

Was he expected to push Eli out in 2018?

Or is this just Leonard being Leonard?

He's such a dick.

how is a 4th round "small" QB a bust, especially since he is still under contract?
Dan Dugan was tagging 7th round picks as a "bust"

I agree, but there are exceptions. If you use a draft pick on a special teams specialist (punter, kicker, long snapper), and he doesn't stick, he's a bust even in the 7th round. Case in point: Matt Dodge.

A bust would be someone like Josh Rosen a 1st RD pick that

It is the expected "fluff" piece about a GM who has in fact made some curious moves and picks:

1. Taking Barkley over a QB at #2 in the 2018 draft
2. Trying to "build" the team in 2018 instead of cutting it down and rebuilding day 1
3. Signing RB J. Steward, OT N. Solder, OG Omameh and keeping E. Flowers for another year despite his flaws, attitude.
4. Signing and trading OBJ for a little less than fair market value. Had he received a #3 next year (conditional even) you could at least understand from a value point.
5. Why didn't he trade LC for a #3 (best #3 based on first 5 games record) as there presumably were takers?

I understand why DG some of these moves. I really, honestly do understand. He is trying to build character. He is trying to figure out the team and build them up.

If DG has a STRONG draft and J. Peppers is a stud SS, we did well and such. If Eli has protection and produces well enough, the issue becomes do we have a QB to replace our aging warrior? Lauletta isn't a guaranteed flop....YET!

Lauletta is a young guy, maybe immature, who either learns this year and develops OR he is gone. DG won't play with him just cause he picked him.
Produce or be cut (like Omameh, Flowers) or traded for value (OBJ, Snacks, Apple) while we can.

Leonard sucks as a journalist

Thatís all.
Lauletta is not good without the puck
Reale01 : 4/18/2019 6:19 pm : link
Therefore a bust. Leorard is a mediocre hockey scribe who has turned into a click-whore football sham.
Leonnard Says a QB
clatterbuck : 4/18/2019 6:44 pm : link
is a must but will hammer Gettleman for drafting Jones or Lock at 6. He'll hammer him for trading up from 17 to get one of them. He'll hammer him if they are both gone by 37. And he'll hammer him for trading for Rosen. Leonard is the worst Giants beat reporter in my memory.
Leonnard is a troll
Steve in ATL : 4/18/2019 6:48 pm : link
don't feed him with clicks.

I personally hatred the Lauletta pick BUT
Red Dog : 4/18/2019 7:06 pm : link
you guys are definitely right on this. It's too early to anoint him a bust.

And Leonard is total garbage. He knows nothing about football and sometimes doesn't even have his facts straight.
Idiot.

Imagine what the Steelers would have been like if they hadn't gotten rid of Big Ben for the same things.

(Do I have to say /sarc?)

Who knows if Kyle will survive pre-season, but it looks like DG just gave him a "try out" ticket.
Only on BBI is Rosen a bust and Lauletta isn't
WillieYoung : 4/19/2019 8:05 am : link
Do you watch any football or are you just lonely and need a Board to belong to and people to agree with you? Lauletta got 1 shot (and I acknowledge it was only one) and looked like he never played organized football and he got arrested off the field. Rosen had a better first season than Eli with a worse team.
It depends on what you think of the 4th round
jcn56 : 4/19/2019 8:41 am : link
If you're the type that believes teams should be routinely hitting on 4th rounders, then it's a bust of a pick - a guy likely never to be anything more than a camp arm (and possibly never a viable backup QB candidate), sold as a possible contender as the next Giants starting QB.

If you understand that the hit rate of a 4th round pick is ridiculously low, and that a 4th round QB's expectations would be even lower, then it's not a bust - especially not so early on in his career.

If a team parts with their 1st round pick before year 2 and you don't think that's being a bust, I don't know what to tell you.

It's basically the very definition of a bust. Especially when people call David Wilson and Jarrod Bunch busts for suffering career-ending injuries.

I think Arizona just might not be a smart franchise and want the newer, more shiny toy.

I don't think Rosen is a bust at all, and I don't think them favoring Murray says much of anything regarding Rosen.

In fact, I think Rosen will be quite good if he gets a chance somewhere else - and he will.

He played for a 1st year coach who already got fired. He had a terrible offensive line. His best WR is a slot guy who is about 40 years old now. Christian Kirk may be a nice player.. but no one is confusing him with an elite outside threat.

I don't see how anyone could reasonably call Rosen a bust based on last year and the fact that Arizona is going to move him because their new coach is more fixated on Kyler Murray

for Arizona, and a bust for the player until he shows otherwise.

Arizona could very well just be making a horrendous decision if they select Murray and move Rosen, but then Rosen has to go elsewhere and play to prove he isn't a bust.

If I was convinced that Rosenís demeanor could fit in NY, Iíd be delighted for him to get a chance to show what a bunch of people were impressed with coming out of college. Donít know how heíd handle the media capital of the work, Iím just leery at this point

GiantJake : 4/19/2019 10:36 am : link
There is no such thing as a fourth round bust. Maybe if a pick was used and the player has no interest in being a pro football player. People sit at their computers, do mocks drafts, read varying scouting reports and consider themselves "draft experts". It's a joke. I listen to sports talk and hear people with no credentials (and no credibility when it comes to NFL player evaluation) basically call Dave Gettleman and Pat Shurmur clueless. "They have no plan", "I don't know why the Giants don't show "Player X" more love", "I just don't understand why they took the best player in last year's draft when they need a QB", etc. It's maddening. Who is better qualified to choose a QB to run Pat Shurmur's offense than Pat Shurmur? Chris Carlin? Rick DiPietro? Stop it. Pat Shurmur wants to win. Dave Gettelman wants to win. They aren't going to call a press conference and let the world know which players they covet. It's a fucking poker game. The Giants drafted very well last season and only had 5 picks. It's year 2 of rebuilding a dumpster fire of a roster. Let's see what Gettelman and company do with 12 picks.

I guess my definition of a "bust" is different.

A bust to me is a guy who is taken with the projection of being a productive, NFL starter, and fails to ever reach that designation during his rookie deal.

Like, to me, Blake Bortles is a bust. He was taken 3rd overall, has been in the league 5 years now, has basically regressed since coming into the league, has 1 winning season and the Jags have moved on.

Josh Rosen has played just 13 NFL games. If Rosen is already a bust, then Eli should have been labeled one after 2004.

Obviously, we know now that Eli was not a bust.

Rosen has to establish himself somewhere else now, but the Cardinals giving up on him doesn't say much of anything to me other than the fact that they're a dysfunctional org. that can't make up their minds and keep changing course.

I'd need to see Rosen actually get an entire season somewhere without a 1 year coach who already lost his job and about as little talent around him as possible before I'd be comfortable calling him a bust.

"Incomplete" applies to Rosen about as well as it could ever apply to a QB at this point. There's just no way of knowing yet.
