The Thing was released in 1982 to very negative reviews. It was described as "instant junk", "a wretched excess", and proposed as the most hated film of all time.
The Klingons on Star Trek: Discovery are often referred to as "Kling-Orcs" by people who don't like the series, but to me, they look more like the Lectroids from Planet 10.
I used The Thing 1982 because it fit the criteria, but even though it wasn't well received at first and failed at the box office, everybody knows about it.
Weird Science is another example. After it left the theaters it went on a substantial run on HBO and cable tv--even with a television spin off.
Does Clerks/Clerks II fall under the category of a cult film?
If so....Clerks.
Side note: I didn't think I would like the second one either and rolled my eyes at the idea of it, thought it was too long of a gap since the original. I forgot about the release and oddly enough, my ex-girlfriend was bugging me to go see it on some random summer afternoon.
All I can say is Clerks 2 was one of those times that having very low expectations paying off was epitomized.
1- The Warriors
2- Dawn of the Dead -original
3- Dazed and Confused
4- Children Shouldn't play with Dead Things
5- I like to hurt People
6- The Return of the Living Dead
7- Fade to Black
8- The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
9- Friday the 13th
10- Maniac

I was thinking along the lines of Dune, which was universally panned by the critics and lost about ten million domestically, but tons of people seem to love it now.
Another one was Waterworld, which got mostly tepid reviews, didn't do so well domestically, but killed it in the overseas markets. Most people think it tanked (no pun intended), but it actually made a pretty good profit. And I know some folks who absolutely love it.
definitely Cult Classics and have not had the proper blu ray release yet

I have The Wraith on DVD and its fairly recent with good bonus extras such as making of and directors commentary. He spends most of it complaining about the studio interfering with what he wanted to do during the shoot in Arizona
I 'stumbled' across it one late night years ago on HBO and still think it's a two-fer movie - bank robbers into vampires, and imho greatly executed....
rounding out my top five
2. Hard Rock Zombies - love the soundtrack, too
3. Basket Case - perfect low budget horror
4. Jesus Christ, Vampire Hunter has some really funny moments
5. Motel Hell Rory Calhoun worth the price of a ticket
"It's a Wonderful Life" tanked at the box office and was pretty much forgotten about until the 1970's when the copyright lapsed and TV stations could air it for free. It took off as holiday TV fare and is now extremely popular (ie. has "cult" following).

From dusk til dawn is such an interesting movie because it starts off being an all time great heist movie and then just flies off the rails. The vamp stuff wasn’t great but it’s a solid watch. I wish there was a heist only version.

UConn I've had the same thought about the flick....I was completely into this riveting story of two pyscho hoods and all of a sudden WTF - and Selma Hayek starts off the whole chaotic transition.... a 'heist only' story would've been really interesting...

Great list, especially #7. Fade to Black was marketed as a horror movie, not sure it fits that genre, but a fantastic movie.
#5 has one of the best interview line "My wife loves this dog, but I'd kick it if I could, but she loves it so I won't" (or something like that) I Like To Hurt People is up on Youtube now.

Just scanned the thread looking for the movies that defined "cult".... Â
And no mentioned Rocky Horror Picture Show? It was the ultimate cult movie for decades.
The my favotie cukt classic cult movie is
Eraserhead.
A lot of films mentioned here are not cult films. Rocky Horror and Eraserhead surely are. I mentioned these above but El Topo by Jodorowsky is the first midnight movie in history followed by John Waters' Pink Flamingos. They paved the way for Rocky Horror's historic midnight run.
the phantom of the paradise.
Amongst Friends
and for a comedy either Up the Creek or Just one of the Guys
Add two stars if you're from Queens.
My number #2 is Office Space
#3: The Black Hole
#4: Dirty Work
The Klingons on Star Trek: Discovery are often referred to as "Kling-Orcs" by people who don't like the series, but to me, they look more like the Lectroids from Planet 10.
Sleepway Camp
Dawn of the Dead?
John Lithgow was on Mark Maron’s Podcast recently and said “laugh while you can Monkey Boy!” He certainly isn’t embarrassed about it.
Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein
March of the Wooden Soldiers (Laurel and Hardy)
Roadhouse
Commando
Office Space
Varsity Blues
I'll go with another favorite:
The Phantom (1996).

Adventures in Babysitting
The Toxic Avenger ( or anything by Troma)
The Secret of NIMH
That is literally the first negative comment I have ever heard about Lost Boys.
They Live
Escape from New York
The 'Burbs
The Big Heat
True Romance
One Eyed Jacks
Invasion Of The Body Snatchers
I quote it often, not sure (ha!) why that went over my head. It just did. I must be one of the breed of nitwits.

If Looks Could Kill
The Adventures of Ford Fairlane
Wanderers
Dusk Till Dawn
and it's not yet a cult classic but I really liked the first John Wick
You did what? his house ? his car? and his dog?
That is John Wick
In a delicious way in that particular instance.
By Jodorowsky: El Topo, The Holy Mountain, Santa Sangre
These filmmakers just about defined cult cinema in the US in the 70s.

I don't get it.

To me, did a fantastic job of creating a very real, dark, lower Manhattan vibe.
Loved the Lovecraft horror flicks too, Reanimator and Demons.
Being John Malkovich
The Princess Bride
