NFT: NFT searching for new TV

Bleedin Blue : 4/19/2019 9:46 pm
Guys, I’m looking for some TV advice. I am a Costco member and they have some TVs 55-60”. Im just not sure what I need. It will be going over my mantle with a pull down mount. Most of the TVs are confusing, I’m no techie. They say trumotion 120 but they’re really 60 hz. ?? Is this a difference I should be concerned about? I watch my baseball and football, but mostly movies. Will a Samsung or LG fit my bill??

Samsung 55UN55NU710DFXZA
LG 60UK6090PUA

Any Thoughts ??? Again not a techie or a gamer, I didn’t think buying a TV would be so confusing Thanks!!
What’s your budget?

Samsung makes the best TVs out there. If you have the budget to buy one, that’s what I’d recommend.

55 inch from Costco. Was $400. Great picture and the built in Roku is pretty nice.

But have to agree that Samsungs are very nice.

I can second the TCL rec. Great to for the cost and the built in Roku works very well. Got a 55" and a 65".

Buy the TCL. Best bang for the buck.
I have the 65” TCL 6 series

...it’s not a perfect tv, but the value for the price is amazing. It was $799 at Best Buy recently, not sure if Costco carries it. The built in Roku is amazing, and supports Dolby Vision and UHD 4K streaming from some native apps like Netflix and Vudu. TCL has some issues with quality control issues, but I’m very happy with my purchase.

Yes, Roku is a streaming device like a fire stick, but it is built in to the TCL. I prefer it over the firestick I have on another tv.
Thanks for the responses

I will look into the TCL also. I’m restricted to size, I can’t anything bigger than a 60”. any thoughts on the two TVs I listed? Is the TCL a 60 hz or 120hz and will the 60-120hz make a difference to someone like me who’s not a techie??
The 6 series is 60hz
NYdeuce : 4/19/2019 11:03 pm : link
unless you get the 75” which you won’t do. The motion doesn’t match that of other tv’s with 120hz, so you may notice it a little more when watching sports with a fast moving object like a baseball or hockey puck.
I would look at the reviews on rtings.com
NYdeuce : 4/19/2019 11:06 pm : link
...very good info.
With the current specs you proposed......
Koffman : 4/19/2019 11:10 pm : link
and the price point you mentioned. I believe you should be able to get a Samsung Qled in the 40-50 inch range. Try open box options from Best Buy as well. The Qled's will give you the best picture besides the Oled's, which are currently outside your price range. Some people like the Qled's better than Oleds because they are brighter.

LG 60UK6090PUA it says trumotion 120 but 60hz is that going to be an issue for viewing?

vizio p series from dell $999, they are offering $250 in dell gift cards bringing the price to $800 after tax. 120hz should be great for sports
LG OLED

Is very expensive but the 65 inch is an amazing TV. If you want the best that’s probably it. I settled for the Samsung QLED which I was able to get for 1500 less. No regrets. I just watch it and am blown away. It’s amazing and sound is great too. I don’t even bother with sound bar most times.

Either TV is really good. All depends on budget.
60hz is a deal breaker
UConn4523 : 4/20/2019 8:08 am : link
I'd rather get a true 120hz from a lesser brand. Samsung makes great TV's, but they aren't that far ahead of everyone else that I'd consider them the gold standard.

I'd rather take that $700 and put it towards a top end unit from Vizio or TCL than a bottom tier unit from Samsung.

Yeah there is but once again we see how reading comp isn't an Internet strong suit. OP lists his budget and sizes he can fit in the space he has and we're seeing suggestions more than double his budget and 10" bigger taboot. Lol.

Again Thanks
Bleedin Blue : 4/20/2019 10:44 am : link
If I understand the responses correctly, I should not consider a TV with a 60HZ refresh rate, make sure it has true 120hz. Someone mentioned Vizio, I see Costco carries them, are they worth looking into? I can stretch my budget, but I’d like to stick to Costco due to their policy on extending the warranty.
I don't know much about refresh rates.
section125 : 4/20/2019 10:59 am : link
But I will tell you that I watch the Yanks on the TCL and the picture is amazing. You can see the individual pieces of dirt in the batter's box and on the mound. in slow mo individual blades of grass on fielding plays. I can follow the ball easily. The color is vibrant, just beautiful.
Of course if you double the refresh rate, the picture should be much clearer.
You should be able to go to Costco and just observe the brands on display which are showing the same video to see the picture quality differences.
I just finished a long search around your price range
vette222184 : 4/20/2019 11:11 am : link
I settled on the 65 Samsung Q6FN for $700 but it was due to a quick price match that isn’t available anymore. It’s not LG OLED, but it’s a fantastic tv with a wide color gamut, good brightness, and strong upscaling of cable tv.

I would look for the 55 version of this tv or target the 65/55 Samsung NU8000. They may still have this one at your local Costco and is only slightly worse across the board compared to the Q6FN. This is the one I would look for. They are both pretty significant upgrades to the LG you mentioned. The LG SK8/9 models are more in line.

If you move away from Samsung, the TCL 6 series is probably your best bang for buck out there. Many of the TVs have panel issues so it’s a bit of a coin flip there which I didn’t want to deal with.. Vizio also offers a lot for the money but they don’t upscale well (cable tv).

Hopefully that helps a bit.
Found these two at Costco
Bleedin Blue : 4/20/2019 11:13 am : link
Samsung QLED QN 55Q6DRAFXZA
And
Sony XBR-55X850G/C

Both in the $1000 range and both true 120 hz, any thoughts?

I have a Vizio from Costco. Had it literally for 10 years - not 1 problem.

I thought I read somewhere once that there are only like 5 companies that actually manufacture the screens and the other companies buy the screens from them and put their own name on them.

Update
Bleedin Blue : 4:04 pm : link
Due to the size limitations and suggestions that I should go with an actual 120hz refresh I purchased the Samsung 55NU8000D for $699 with a free 7 year full service warranty from COSTCO.

Thank you for all your help and suggestions!!!
