Dave Te: Trading for Jets' LB Darron Lee

dk in TX : 4/20/2019 11:42 am
I do not live in NY, so do not ever watch the Jets. Dave Te has stated several times in his podcasts that the Jets are shopping Darron Lee for a day 3 draft pick?

Does he fit the Giants scheme? Can we acquire him for a 5th or 6th round draft pick. He was highly rated in Eli Apples' class as a run and chase linebacker.

Your thoughts please.
No thanks

Heís been a big disappointment. Another bad draft choice for the Jets.
I don't like him at all.
Klaatu : 4/20/2019 11:53 am : link
He had a good - not great - year last year, after two very bad years (he was awful in coverage), not to mention being suspended once by Bowles for being late to practice, fined a couple of times for PF's (I forget if they were roughing or late hits...once for a face-mask I think). I'd steer clear of him.

Why has he been a disappointment? 242 tackles in 3 years... 4 sacks , 3 INTís. And heís only 24. His best football could ahead of him.

Heís terrible in coverage which was supposed to be one of his strengths and for reasons Klaatu mentioned.
Graded as a top 25 LB last year

I would trade a 4th or 5th for him in a heartbeat - considering the Giants have 5 picks in those rounds and the Jets want more picks.

The Jets and Giants, despite the local rivalry, are perfect trade partners this draft

It could be, but I'd rather not take the risk with a team that's putting a new emphasis on "culture." I'd rather draft a kid who's "clean" from the get-go.
Itís alarming

That the Jets spent so much on Mosley and tried to give to Barr also in an attempt to replace Lee.

Mosley and Barr are great and they have cap room ... made perfect sense to pursue them

You don't attempt to replace a good player by spending a fortune on two players to replace him when you have so many other holes on the roster.

From the talks between the two teams, Philadelphia is showing the strongest interest, but they also love Germaine Pratt, if they can get him late day two. Hey folks, don't discount this kid. The Jets tried to turn him into Shazier - there is only one of them. He was a safety first & his logical spot is at the will position outside. Whether the Eagles, Giants or another team, this was a first round guy a few years back. If all the Jets are asking for is Rd 6, why not go for it? Not saying the Giants, but with 12 picks, how many are really going to stick. So ask yourself - is he worth that low of a pick to see if a change of scenery can do the trick?
Maybe...
Klaatu : 4/20/2019 6:48 pm : link
But I'd rather draft Germaine Pratt, myself.

much better in coverage than the way overpaid Ogletree.
The contract status is an important factor too.

What you get in a trade for Lee is one year for about $1.85MM. I think his fifth-year option is still open for a few weeks, so that's another item to consider. Exercise it, and you're on the hook for a big number if he gets hurt; pass on it, and he's free to walk next March.

Losing him might not be so bad if your team can reasonably expect to earn 2021 comp picks. That's extremely unlikely for the Giants. Look at their 2016 draft class: Shepard has already re-signed; the only other candidates are Goodson and Perkins, who might fetch a seventh-round pick in the XFL draft. I guess Markus Golden or Corey Coleman or [insert random vet signed for one year] could have a breakout season. But with loads of cap space freeing up, the Giants are much more likely to be net buyers next year.

I think this widely-held view of extra picks is misguided, for several reasons.

First, the Giants' roster is awful, and the 2019 draft appears pretty deep. It's entirely plausible that many players on the board at #180 (NYG's sixth-round pick) will develop into better pros than the Giant veteran they would replace on cutdown day.

Second, late picks are basically lottery tickets. They are cheap, and not very valuable; but the more you have, the better your chances of holding a winner. Trading away one pick doesn't make your other picks better players. (It might not even improve their chances of making the team, especially if the trade involves acquiring a veteran.) And if nothing else, for fans, the extra late picks have lottery-ticket entertainment value - not just on Draft Day, but over the course of the young player's career.

Third, and this applies in particular to the last two picks at #232 and #245: a day-three pick may not be a better prospect than a priority UDFA; but the key point is that you don't have to outrace (and possibly outbid) 31 other teams for his services. You get to lock in the guy you want. That matters, especially to a team that is not, at the moment, an especially attractive destination. Of course, the odds are still heavily stacked against him amounting to anything, but at least you get to find out, at minimal cost.

Will all twelve picks make the team? Probably not. But we won't know until September which ones did. And the pick they trade away might have been a player who would have contributed.

Stats really don't bear that out. Throughout his career, Ogletree has been one of the better LB's when it came to coverage, although he did struggle last year, which was surprising to me.

Lee, on the other hand, had a decent year last year after his first two were abysmal, but it still doesn't come close to Ogletree's worst year (except for 2015 when got hurt and only appeared in four games).
Giants are not creative enough to justify an investment in DL

I believe a team playing a traditional 4-3 putting him as a stacked WILLL, and leaving him as center of the field short area pass defender in pass defense situations will get a bargain.

Heck, I just hope the Giants are sufficiently creative to get value from Jabrill Peppers.
