Just watched a replay. It was on nfl network. This is why Reese and his crew were so bad. Tennessee got Conklin in a trade and lost a 4th. Then the bears get Floyd for a 4th. Then we take apple who wasn’t in Mayock a top 30
horrible first night of the draft. Whoever the clown in the draft room was that kept leaking our plans (probably that dickhead Ross), really screwed us that year. It was embarrassing for the franchise.
There were a few saying "watch for Apple" that year. He fit the mold and checked a lot of boxes for Giants at CB (Reese and his measurables). Had Reese written all over him. Once Floyd and Conklin were gone it shouldn't have been that big of a surprise.
While the Giants still have a hole at RT and would love to have Â
gotten Conklin...it’s also fair to say the rest of that 1st round has been pretty underwhelming. Keanu Neal at 17 to the Falcons is the only 1st rounder taken after Apple to make a Pro Bowl I think.
Some good finds in Rds 2-3 that year...Michael Thomas, for example
And is only 23 years old. It doesn't mean he was the right fit for the Giants, but I still think he can be a top 15 corner in the league. Ross was the DB we took that really made me nauseous.
and they seem set and satisfied with Apple as a starting CB. They are not looking to replace him in the draft.
I'd rather have a starting CB than Floyd.
Conklin had a great rookie year but hasn't been the same after his knee injury.
The Tunsil gas mask incident 20 minutes before the draft undoubtedly affected the Giants choices. If not for that, they probably get either Tunsil or Conklin.
I really wanted Michael Thomas instead of Shepard, big guy over little guy; and Justin Simmons instead of Darian Thompson, great combine over terrible combine.
Those were bad picks and NYG has now doubled down by extending Shepard.
Drafting a 3rd CB when the OL was at best a work in progress and the DL was questionable.
Then Sterling Sheppard over Michael Thomas and Paul Perkins over Jordan Howard.
Terrible drafting and roster construction during the Reese era.
Perkins over Howard I could maybe understand. Maybe. If I remember correctly, he'd already had two knee surgeries, which was why he dropped.
Shepard over Thomas? Your guess is as good as mine.
And, yeah, they lost out on Conklin and were probably scared of Tunsil, but Taylor Decker was right there for the taking. Un-freaking-believable.
And then he doesn’t pursue Whitworth bc he’s trying to get younger.
Reese had plenty of opportunities to save his job even at the end.
I used to catch a lot of flak for defending Reese early on. I thought he had horrible luck with catastrophic, career-ending injuries, not to mention Plax shooting himself in the leg. I mean...WTF?
But I really soured on the guy after 2012, and that smirking douchebag Marc Ross absolutely turned my stomach.

Same here. The 12 draft and subsequent years were hot garbage.
As soon as I heard the trade up by the titans, I knew exactly who they were selecting and they were jumping us to get him. Reese just stood still like a statue. I was not a fan of Floyd
And I’m not playing the 20/20 hindsight game because there were several times I was wrong... I was on cloud 9 when we drafted Ron Dayne
I didn’t like the pick either and I’m usually always onboard too. I didn’t care even from a talent or player eval POV, I just didn’t want that position or player in the first that year. Reese got more and more annoying as things wore on.
That was one draft where drafting for need would have been Â
BPA is okay if you are a perennial playoff team. With the holes the Giants had and still have, it has to be BPA at a position of need.
Reese also went to the other extreme when he drafted Pugh, who I think was the 6th and last tackle taken in the 1st round.
Drafting for “need” is the stupidest approach to roster construction and you just gave a great example of why.
Obviously the Giants shouldn’t draft a RB 6th overall, but this team needs talent and every other position should be in play. You don’t bypass elite talent at position ___ just because you “need” _____. Free agency is for needs, the draft is for long term success

Still a kick in the nuts Jets took Revis a few picks earlier, clearly the better prospect. That's why Reeses obstinance in not trading up made me sick.

Tried to get younger yet signed fork in the back Brandon Marshall that same off season
