He was getting boo'd heavily before he was even drafted.
That was a crazy time on BBI. Giants also wanted Chris Snee, so they refused to trade their #2 that year. In the end, Giants got everything they wanted that draft!
To the 2004 draft discussion on BBI? I remember the trade for Eli as a moment of euphoria but that is likely because I really wanted him going into the draft. Could have been a lot more divided, would be interesting to look back.
Because I did not think much separated Eli Manning from Ben Roethlisberger. In hindsight I likely would have been proven incorrect as I do not think Roethlisberger would ever have survived the media frenzy of New York and he and Coughlin would not have gotten along.

Nor Rivers, re scrutiny. A bunch would disagree on that, but I am totally firm on that opinion. Good morning Counselor. Hope you’re well

For me, it's not that I didn't like Eli or think that he wouldn't be a good QB, but I thought the cost to get him would be prohibitive, and I was beginning to question the whole idea of a 1st Round pick as a "franchise QB" in the first place.
If you looked at recent Super Bowls up to that time, you saw a lot of QB's appearing in them who weren't high draft picks. Sure, there was Elway, McNair, McNabb, but there was also Brady, Favre, Delhomme, Matt Hasselback, Trent Dilfer, Brad Johnson, Rich Gannon...it seemed like a good idea to build a dominant team rather than investing heavily in a 1st Round QB when so many of them were flaming out, never coming close to justifying their draft status.
Seems like yesterday. Hard to believe it's been 15 years. Time flies.
We’re you still a believer in Collins going forward?
Me too. And Matt Schaub.

I felt he was good, not great. I felt he was good enough to attempt to fix other areas of need. Sometimes, being wrong rocks!

...several hours before the Draft got underway that "predicted" E.X.A.C.T.L.Y. what went down between the Giants and the Chargers.
In other words, there must have been a ton of scuttlebutt floating around about how the Giants would secure Eli Manning at #4!
