The Oakland Raiders sent home their scouting department before the draft for fear of leaks. Could that anxiety stem from an expectation that new Raiders general manager Mike Mayock and coach Jon Gruden are planning a bombshell maneuver on Thursday during Round 1 of the 2019 NFL Draft and want to ensure a report doesn't scuttle the plot? NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport said on Up To The Minute Live that his understanding is what that the "Raiders are looking at is some sort of surprise pick at No. 4 that would necessitate absolute secrecy." |
Well they definitely have the draft capital to do it.
Britt, funny you say that, as I was typing the OP, I was actually going to say Jones or possibly Drew Lock.
They will have first shot at the QB crop, IMO. Arizona is not picking Murray at one.
dep, would that really be a surprise though? Oliver is being mocked in the top 10 for most drafts, but I guess in Raider Land, that could be considered a Surprise.

With Q. Williams on the board, I would think so.
Oliver? Or whoever positional player will be minimal risk.
QB is only one that teams might jump, imo
I think the key is they didn't ask them to come back. The writing is on the wall with Mayock there that after the draft they probably clean house and fire all the scouts and hire a new group. That's pretty SOP for a new GM. Essentially they are saying "thanks, we'll take it from here".
+1000000
Otherwise it all sounds like a lot of drama over very little.
I guess if they want to draft a QB, they could be worried that someone will trade up to get him if the word gets out. But it's not a big secret that Gruden doesn't love Derek Carr and that they might be willing to move on.
If I'm running the Giants, I love the idea of the Raiders taking a QB, because then it's more likely one of the top edge rushers falls to #6.
There's no way Gruden likes Jones over Haskins or Lock assuming they go QB in the first place which I don't believe
Chuckie loved home some Drew Lock at the Senior Bowl, and no one would jump the Raiders at 4 for Lock - unless they suspected the Raiders were targeting him.
Greedy runs routes effortlessly with receivers he has that rare special blanket coverage ability. And Mayock has a very good eye. If its Greedy they made an excellent pick.
Just about definitely not at 6. Likely not at 17 either but more possible. Will Grier round 2-3 makes more sense.
If Oak does this or a non pass rush guy , it would be huge. Also more reason for them to trade with us.
Except the Raiders still have 2 late first round picks (at least for now). It's much harder to have a pre draft plan for pics 24 and 27, not knowing who will still be available at that point. I guess 27 can be used to trade down, there are usually teams looking to trade back into round 1.
