OBJ trade

snickers : 4/23/2019 1:20 pm
Here we stand, 2 days before the draft and most of us have had some time to think about whether we like or dislike the trade. It is a polarizing trade for sure. Are we going to be able to replace his production? Not sure the roster as it is set now will prevent defenses from filling the box to stop SB. So BBI, how do you feel about the trade one month later and how should we proceed? Does Engram and his late year production sooth the loss or are we in search of a new number one? Personally, I was surprised by the decision but have come to grips with what has transpired.

without OBJ. 16 of them were in the playoffs last year. Your thoughts are nonsense and there is nobody out there that can answer your question.
Addition by subtraction
Go Terps : 4/23/2019 1:26 pm : link
We should have traded him a couple years earlier, but the organization lacked the necessary foresight. At least they learned and got rid of a player whose presence was a net negative. Better late than never. What we got in return wasn't as important as removing his presence from the locker room.

But, what about

The medical staff thought that he was not cooperative with the training program and sat out games in which he could have played. They were happy to see him go.The same people told me that he was disrespectful to the coach at a level that few would find acceptable.
I’m good with it
mfsd : 4/23/2019 1:36 pm : link
Biggest reason is within the next year or two we’ll have a young QB learning the ropes, who will be better without OBJ in his ear demanding the ball.

Hard to judge the value we got - maybe we could have gotten more before last season, had PS not convinced the powers that be to sign him/keep him. I think we got as close to max value for where things stood this offseason.

The risk of him pulling an Antonio Brown and forcing his way out would have gotten bigger each year. IMO

The Giants won
Gman11 : 4/23/2019 1:44 pm : link
one game in the first half of the season with Beckham. I think they can match that without him.
I can recall the hand-wringing when Tiki Barber retired.
Klaatu : 4/23/2019 1:46 pm : link
He was 60% of the offense," went the refrain. How could the Giants possibly replace that?

Well, no single player made up for the loss of Tiki's production, and no single player is going to make up for the loss of OBJ's. It will take a team effort now, just as it did twelve years ago.
Bad teams love to blame their best players....

Think he wanted out of here. He was not the man anymore, with Barkley tearing it up and him always being injured and not trying yo play at the end of last season. Tremendous skill set and will be missed big time as a deep threat. Think/ hope that he gave DG a lot of ammunition to turn this team around, with this draft and cap money for next year. Too many bad headlines for this team, and I am sure management is happy as well. Plaxico #2. These guy do not fit in NYC. DG knows that and he will avoid them in the future. MO.
I'm going to reserve judgement for a while
ron mexico : 4/23/2019 1:55 pm : link
See how peppers and the picks pan out in conjunction with the rest of DG's plan and how OBJ performs in Cleveland.

Who can say
kdog77 : 4/23/2019 1:56 pm : link
Before the Giants pick the player at 17 + 95? The only metric that matters is the W-L record of the two teams involved in the trade. If Giants go 8-8 in 2019 will that be counted as success? IMO the Browns need to make playoffs with OBJ, but they are getting him at bargain value b/c the Giants screwed up on re-signing him before trading him.
Let's see what they do with the draft pick first

Time
Thegratefulhead : 4/23/2019 2:03 pm : link
Now that time has passed, this trade was no-brainer and I think DG got great value. We were going to run this offense through Barkely, OBJ was going to see less targets. The situation as it unfolded was going to explode and we would have ended up only getting a 3rd and a 5th for him. Teams win SBs all the time without superstar WRs.
Steelers get a 3rd for Brown
GothamGiants : 4/23/2019 2:04 pm : link
Giants get that + a top 20 pick + a very talented young safety perfect for this defense for Odell

and people still cry. He was an inconsistent highlight reel who couldn’t stay healthy or shut his mouth and is now exhibiting even more childish behavior. Good. Riddance.

on OBJ- is going to depend on who you speak to in giants land--- there is not even close to a uniform view in the building by personnel. that is a fact, so anyone touting that u must filter it. just like there are some up very high happy to be happy about the loss of this cancer... there are many in the building also very disappointed to see him traded. so pls enough with the spin---- there was not consensus in the building.

on the trade itself... while bummed that they traded him at a time when they were getting more weapons to take advantage of his talents again.... I am absolutely fine with him being gone. the team wants to build the offense differently as evidence by the people they are signing. a slot WR and another slot/move the chains grinder. trading edge rush for OG. its fine with me. But I am not going to live in a fantasy land that says trading him is addition by subtraction because factually... he carried a crappy offense to the playoffs. so the team when it sucked... sucked less because of him. he then got hurt on a sh$t throw over the middle. not like he just pulled a hammy or something.
if they nail the picks, and peppers is good... then with the barkley oriented offense.... the trade can turn out to be a slam dunk ALL THE WHILE, being good for cleveland as well.

He is a tremendous distraction. Disrespectful, look at me, fucking bi-polar cunt. The game of football is a man's game. No excuses no room for little bitches which is exactly what he is..not only that but a dropsie oft inured little bitch. He is a prima donna in many ways, his fragile body is just one of the ways.

The fact that we were able to trade him and get a stud like peppers, the 17th pick in the draft and a late 3rd for him? Absolutely stunning. The trade was magnificent not just good, magnificent. When the Giants traded him they praised him and wished him well. His twitter rant was illegible and speaks to mental illness. Aww is the wittle baby upset he wasn't wanted anymore??? Thought he was a good fit, but his talent is unquestionable. When he got here he was a good kid, and was a good kid at first here, I will point to that great catch as a turning pointy, the media fell in love with him, and he fell in love with himself and the entire trip. You can't blame him in a way, who amongst us would handle the situation so easily. I think the Giants never handled it well, and one look at that miserable record with him here tells you everything you need to know. That is not on Beckham, that is on the Giants. How long did it tale Belechick to get rid of a talented wide receiver, and that was before he won a Super Bowl, but he already knew what a winning organization looked like. I will say I am happy the Giants finally recognized they needed to move on from Beckham, that it was not working here, but now that they did they had better turn this around and fast. Beckham explodes in Cleveland, makes the playoffs, and we don't pick a QB once again and once again have a losing record, watch out how bad this will get, and it would be deserved.

would have been foolish, only advocated by those who have personalized this issue.

I wish things could have worked out, but if the stories are true about him cursing out Shurmur and being a pain in the ass to the coaching staff - he should have been traded.

he was one of the most talented offensive wepaons in the league. Now we still have one of the most talented offensive weapons in the league. No one is at OBJ's level, but they have some talented wrs and it is possible that having two wrs that can line up anywhere on the field, plus Engram, and the rest that will be enough to cause opposing defenses trouble. Now - may be harder to tell who the first or even the 2nd read is.

Biggest offensive issue when OBJ was here and now that he's gone - Right Tackle.

No, what was foolish was signing him to a contract and then trading him a year later. We're eating $16M in dead money this year.

I first suggested trading him following the 2016 season. That would have been pre-injury and pre-more OBJ bullshit...the haul for him then would have been significantly higher. The outcry from the fans would have been higher as well, but most of them had their heads up their asses on this issue anyway.

And who personalized the issue more than his fanboys that now are mainly nowhere to be found? Before the trade Beckham was a misunderstood generational player on BBI. Since the trade he's an asshole on BBI...had he never been traded most of the people calling him an asshole would still be saying he was misunderstood.

The fans personalized the whole issue with Beckham, and it blinded them to what was actually going on.

bc4life : 4/23/2019 5:21 pm : link
towards a HOF career and what were his main offenses - fake urination in the endzone, choking in his one playoff game, - yeah that's good reason to trade him.

they signed him beacuse he was worth the moeny, then traded him the next year because things weren't working out. Hey thet's business, taht's maangement - you make the best decisions based on the infromation in front of you. people with all the info in front of them - not some fan with limited infromation and nothing to lose.

dead money hurts, but trading him sent a message that will serve as a building block for the future.

you just never know

Some people are just comfortable moving on since he's no longer on the team.

Shouldn't be that tough a concept to understand. If he was still a Giant, there'd be more reason to discuss him on a daily basis like this since it would actually be theoretically impacting this team in some way.

Now? Who cares. All that matters now is what's done with the picks that were received in return and where NYG goes from here.

I barely even read these threads anymore, but I notice that there's a Beckham thread with about 100+ posts on it near the top of the forum on a daily basis still. I suspect it's still the same 5-10 posters reiterating the same things they've already posted 500 times.

How that's productive, I am not sure...

Go Terps : 4/23/2019 5:27 pm : link
If you couldn't see trouble on the horizon after 2016 it's because you didn't want to see it. An objective look at the situation would have told you two things:

1. This guy might be a problem
2. He's going to want the biggest contract a WR ever got

You put those two pieces of information together and it leads you to a decision - to pay or not to pay? Had the front office reached the correct decision (not to pay), it would have led them to a second decision: when to trade? The answer to that is at the peak of his value, which would have been between the 2016 and 2017 seasons, when the receiving team would be looking a full season with Beckham in his rookie deal before he realistically expected the new contract.

I'm sure there's some thread from January-March 2017 where I'm saying all this shit basically word for word. That was the time to do it...the haul would have been enormous.
I think within 2 years this trade will look like
USAF NYG Fan : 4/23/2019 5:27 pm : link
an elite WR with some injury and personality issues was traded for 2 great players and 1 core player. I also think that even with the money lost to dead-cap for 2019, OBJ would have cost the team more than the 3 players in return.
