NFT: NFL Draft obsessing - what drives this phenomenon/disorder?

flycatcher : 4/24/2019 2:30 pm
Many fans debate, argue, and lobby for months before the actual draft even happens - some do it all year round. I'm not talking about the real scouts (Sy, Dave Te, etc.), I'm referring to just about everyone else.

I think it's obvious that there's a psychological component to this. I get that fans "live vicariously" through their rooting interests; but when draft obsessing goes on for months, it seems like it's beyond normal fandom.

I'd like to know if any BBIers with psych backgrounds, professional or otherwise, think about this. Does it stem from a subconscious desire to improve ourselves? Is it because we subconsciously want to re-live the excitement that we had as kids anticipating new toys at Christmas/birthdays? Is this something on the OCD spectrum?
Therapy suggestions are welcome.

It's fun. Some fans are actually more interested in team building.
I tried going cold turkey off of Draft

Legit funny! I like the 'hope for the future" theory...and I agree that it's also a lot of fun, I've done that draft simulator site dozens of times.

any other sport really... The NFL draft affects teams right away and most winning teams are teams that draft well. Unlike baseball where you won't see players in the major leagues for years if ever. I mean look at the Giants last year. Barkley OROY, Will Hernandez starting LG, Zo Carter played as a rookie and made some plays, BJ Hill started and made plays... You won't see that type of thing happen in other sports and football is the biggest sport.
I used to get really into it

but then the player I wanted would be chosen by some team like the Eagles and I would have to switch from loving the player to hate.

Can't wait for the draft but won't get attached to any player until the Giants pick them.

I think most of us are in football withdrawl.

The stench of last season is just about gone and we’re still undefeated and tied for first heading into next year. Springtime means renewal and hope springs eternal.

Seriously, I retired last year and have nothing better to do.
You know what's more interesting to me?

And OOTP. I like my 3-4 zone blitz high hitpower D and mauling oline pistol read option offense. Used to draft baseball in computer sims before fantasy was popular with the normies, days of rotisserie leagues.

but you can't really grade a draft for at least 2 years, so there is only so much you can take away from what happens tomorrow night. Even if they draft a QB, so what. He isn't starting for us, so that tells us very little. We all know Eli is gone at some point.
It's really, really weird, I agree.

Having a vested interest in the draft I fully get, but the prognostications are a total waste of time to me. None of us know anything. I'll enjoy watching the draft tomorrow. Absolutely But all this hooplah is silly to me, too.
I am sure

I am in the minority, but I don't pay much attention to it. I read about the players the Giants drafted after the fact. I like reading about the real players who will be on the team. I would rather do other things than read about a bunch of guys who will never play for the Giants.

Depths to the top. We needed a couple of good drafts. I think last years was one and a good one this year leads to an incredible amount of cap space next year. Watching your team at the very bottom begin to assemble the pieces to establish ourselves as a great team with staying power is fun for me.

Its like election night every year.
