Did you get what you wanted, in the last five years ?

Manny in CA : 4/24/2019 6:35 pm

2105 - Wanted Brandon Scherff (all the media projected him to the Giants); Skins swooped and stole him

2016 - Wanted Jack Conklin - The Titans traded up to grab him.

2017 - Wanted Patrick Mahomes real bad (as did Ben Mcadoo); Andy Reid leap-frogged everybody to grab him

2018 -Finally, vindication - The Giants picked the best player on the board (Saquon Barkley) and future ALL PRO, Will Hernandez

2019 - It's complicated because I'm advocating a trade-down, counting on TJ Hockenson being around i#10 over-all.. The one that I would really be excited to see is late-round pick, WR Antoine Wesley (next Rany Moss) ....

Reading that list makes me understand that the leaks absolutely killed the giants over the years.

Also Leonard Floyd got scooped by the bears.
Only thing I got that I wanted recently was Landon Collins

No team jumped the Giants because the media knew who the Giants were going to pick.

This year.
You have to pick as you are on the clock...
Amtoft : 4/24/2019 7:09 pm : link
Every year I try this. It is easy to pick after all the picks are in because you can pretend you know certain players fall. I usually take a guy in the mid rounds that falls hard, but felt like a steal for me.... in the years from 2015..

2015 - CB Trae Waynes
2016 - OT Laremy Tunsil
2017 - OT Cam Robinson
2018 - RB SaQuan Barkley
2019 - depends who is there... Quinnen Williams, Josh Allen, Ed Oliver, Devin White in that order assuming Kyler Murray and Bosa are gone.
Barkley was the only one I can remember
Motley Two : 4/24/2019 7:10 pm : link
in recent years and that was really all credit to him. I didn't even factor in what was best for the Giants(though I didn't want a QB last year.), or is RB a good value at #2, none of that shit.

It was all Barkley. For me it was impossible to watch his college highlights and not want him playing for the Giants.

Not since Nicks
MM_in_NYC : 4/24/2019 7:10 pm : link
And Flowers was the one pick that was anyone but - and of course got him. Petrus hasn’t been great but would’ve made huge difference.
Barkley
Steve in ATL : 4/24/2019 7:11 pm : link
and that is all that I got right.
100% wanted Saquon followed by Hernandez in round 2
BlueLou'sBack : 4/24/2019 7:13 pm : link
last year, and if pressed would have chirped like a Robin at getting Lonzo Carter in round 3.

So DG and I are in tune so far...
Just Barkley.

Was pissed beyond belief that they screwed up getting Jack Conklin, but that's just another example of why Reese and Ross absolutely, positively had to go away.

2015 - Scherff
2016 - Conklin
2017 - Ramcyk
(Why didn't Reece bolster the OL?)
2018 - Barkley
2019 - In descending order... Williams, Allen, White.
Only 4 times in my 20+ years of following the draft

Have they selected who I wanted

Shockey

Eli (would have been happy with Ben)

Dave Wilson

Barkley (would have been happy with Rosen)
Wanted Saquon.
Beezer : 4/24/2019 7:22 pm : link
Got him.

Don’t recall a huge player preference previously. Just really thought getting 26 would be fun for years.
I'll be honest and not lie like some here...

These are the people I wanted. I'll admit if I failed. You will see a theme from me.

2015) Brandon Scherff - I loved his tape. I knew he would be a great OL player. Stolen from us before we had a chance. Jerry Reach, reaches for Ereck Flowers.

2016) Jack Conklin - We really needed OL help. Conklin would have been an easy pick for us. Stolen. Jerry Reach reaches for Eli Apple (I couldn't believe Laremy Tunsil was falling down the draft board because of that video. Probably one of the most shocking NFL draft moments).

2017) O. J. Howard & Garett Bolles - Since we were picking so late I had two guys in mind. I figured OJ Howard would be gone but he would have been ideal for blocking and receiving. Garett Bolles met my eye test. I really liked his foot work. Quite an athletic OL player.

2018) Quenton Nelson - Sorry Barkley, but I was more interested in another generational talent and that was Quenton Nelson. Both are pro bowl players after their first NFL season. Only 3 players in the top 10 of the 2018 draft were selected to the pro bowl. Barkley, Nelson, and Denzel Ward.

2019) Quinnen Williams and Josh Allen. This draft class really scares me at #6. I don't feel good about what's available at #6 in a lot of mocks. The drop off in talent is real at #6 is what I mean. I want the Giants to consider a trade back if Haskins is available and Williams and Allen are gone. I REALLY want Herbert or Tua in 2020. We need draft capital. The players that will be available in the 10-15 range (10-15 meaning the Dolphins, Redskins, etc's draft spot) are at the same tier level as the player that will be available at #6 if the draft unfolds like I think it will. I think Devin Bush can be just as effective as Devin White for example. Are either hall of fame caliber LBs? No, but they will get the job done.

Could you see a theme? I was pounding the drum on the philosophy: "Hey Jerry, if you want to be a competitive team you need to fix the OL! What are you thinking you knucklehead!?". Every year I was sounding off on the Giant's official forums about it. Of the players I wanted in those 4 years two have been pro bowl players (Scherff and Nelson). Conklin and Bolles have not been failures. They have been productive members of their teams. Graded as good players based on their production. I can't say that I wanted any failures. No Ereck Flowers, Eli Apple level players.
I’ve never gone into a draft

wanting a player.
Most upset I've ever been ....
Manny in CA : 4/24/2019 9:10 pm : link

And turns out most wrong was '99 when the Giants picked Luke "petiwho ?" Pettitgout over who I thought was a gold jacket type - Aaron Gibson.

This leak shit is getting so old. Do you really think it took a leak for the skins and Titans to know we needed help on the oline or for the Bears to know we were weak at linebacker...smh
I've been following a long time and this thread got me thinking so I
Hades07 : 4/24/2019 11:01 pm : link
looked back on the drafts to see:

1988, the first draft I followed. I didn't know much, but I was playing OL on my team and I wanted the Giants to pick and OL. I was facinated by this huge guy out of Michigan, John Elliott and was disappointed when the took Eric Moore. That disappointment didn't last long.

1989, I can't remember who I wanted but was very happy we got another player on the OL. Brian Williams. I didn't know who he was before the draft though.

1990, Rodney Hampton was the player I wanted. Became a Georgia fan back then after meeting Hershal Walker. Said he was the next Walker.

So far the Giants are doing well by me and this is when I really started reading up on stuff and following.

1991, Roman Phifer was a player I really loved. Thought he would be the next great Giants LBer. wtf...a FB?

1992, finally the Giants got smart and got the next great TE. Derek Brown, exactly who I wanted and they needed. Could do it all. Ain't I smart?

1993, Having picked up our future QB we didn't have a first. I heard a lot of people projecting this DE Strahan for the Giants. Thought that would be a stupid pick and a waste. Was hoping they could nab Chad Brown in the 2nd.

1994, Really wanted a WR, didn't have a specific one, was happy when Alexander lasted to their pick...Thomas Lewis WTF?

1995, This was a cool draft for me because a college friend of mine went at the top, I knew the Giants had no chance at him but I really wanted Ki-Jana Carter in blue.

1996, Ogden, like everybody else.

1997, Having missed Ogden the previous year, we missed Walter Jones too, very disappointed.

1998, Again with the OL I wanted Faneca, but I was really happy with Williams as I had never considered he might be available.

1999, I am noticing I have had an OL issue....LJ Shelton was my guy. Really hated the pick we made with Petitgout, shows what I know.

2000, Said well before the draft...don't take Dayne he will not be good in the NFL....F-me....Thomas Jones and Bubba Franks were the two I most wanted.

2001, I was big on Heap, was sad when they passed on him for Will Allen.

2002, Was really hoping McKinnie or Levi Jones made it to the pick....OL again, its a theme

2003, I was just hoping one of the good DTs in the draft last to the Giants pick, luckily one did, William Joseph, a steal!

2004, OK, I liked Eli but liked Ben about the same, would have taken Gallery or Sean Taylor over both of them though. Definitely wouldn't have traded picks for Eli when Ben was still available.

2005, We had no first again. Was hoping Justin Tuck would be the pick in the 2nd. Figured he'd be there, then they took Webster. I did actually throw my remote this time. Petitgout was the other that sent it flying. (Kalif Barnes was another player I wanted....ha..OL...I think I have a problem)

2006, Demeco Ryans...we needed a LBer, thought he was a great fit....but we drafted a DE and made him a LBer instead...I guess that makes sense.

2007, Reggie Nelson....Reggie Nelson....OMG REGGIE NELSON IS STILL THERE WTF ARE YOU DOING....ROSS!?!?!?

It was at this point in my life that I felt I was getting to emotionally invested in what I thought the Giants should do. So I decided to mellow out a bit and be hopeful and happy with whoever they got. Because WTF do I know anyway.

2008, Tyrell Johnson was the Safety they needed and better than Phillips, but Phillips was darn good too...so...ok

2009, Hakeem Nicks...no way he makes it to the Giants but it would be nice...haha!

2010, Earl Thomas if he lasted or Derrick Morgan if he didn't and they sandwiched JPP, funny that

2011, I wanted a CB, Jimmy Smith was my target since he was the best I expected to be there. Was very pleasantly surprised when Amukamara was still there.

2012, Wilson was my favorite RB in the draft, but I didn't want a RB. I wanted an OL.....I know, surprising right...Jonathan Martin or Cordy Glenn

2013, Was hoping for a DE or OL, nobody I was particularly enamored with as I didn't see much after the top few guys in this draft

2014, I like the OBJ pick, but wanted Lewan or Zack Martin...you know...the offensive linemen

2015, Vic Beasley and Danny Shelton were the two I liked for the Giants

2016, Stanley, Conklin, Decker; yup OL...did not like Floyd, but I did like Apple...pfft

2017, Ramczyk, Bolles, Robinson....OL

2018, Barkley or Darnold...but would have been very happy with Nelson too.

2019, I hope either Q.Williams or Allen make it to 6. At 17 I like J.Williams or Ford and Risner at 37. But honestly I see so many great players this year and so few that I would not be interested in that the Giants will be making me very happy this weekend regardless.

If you read all that, I'm shocked but I hope it brought back memories for you. It was a bit of fun for me to go through all of them.

I hope everyone enjoys the draft in their own way this weekend. Good luck and have fun.
