The pitch Devin White made to Dave Gettleman and the Giants

GFAN52 : 4/25/2019 7:15 am
[img]“When a team wins a championship, a Super Bowl, they always got a great middle linebacker,” White said. “You want to win, get you a great middle linebacker.”

Did general manager Dave Gettleman hear that?

“[That’s] what I told him,” White said with a big smile while standing on the field Wednesday at Nissan Stadium.

If Gettleman was convinced, White could be his pick at No. 6, which would make him the franchise’s first linebacker taken in the first round since Carl Banks in 1984.[/img]

Giants pick a LB

and Kiper didn't pick it in his mock. LOL

I don’t know if White is the right pick

But it’s fair to say the Giants have always had a top MLB when they’ve won the SB...Carson, Pepper, Pierce...then somehow Blackburn played like one in the 2011 playoffs
For a long time it's been thought that

White is not getting past TB. Seems to be a bit of shuffling going on (Allen, Bush) -- so we'll see.

One of the games of Round 1 -- who will fall???
I prefer Devin Bush...

Thanks for coming in Devin. Next!
I wonder how much the character flags are affecting White's stock.

If he somehow drops to #17, it will be hard to pass. On the other hand, if he's on the board at #17, there's probably something really bad, and a lot more recent than high school.

The bit about great middle linebackers simply isn't true. As an example, the 2002 Tampa defense carried the Bucs to a championship. Yet somehow, there's no bust of Shelton Quarles in Canton. And of course there's Blackburn, who made one play. A wonderful, memorable play, but still...
We can argue
mittenedman : 4/25/2019 7:30 am : link
about who the best fit is but getting White at ILB would be a huge score for this D. We've been missing that Alpha Dog for a long time now and haven't had a destroyer there since AP in his prime. That was over 10 years ago.

White next to Ogletree at ILB gives this defense an entirely different look.
The Giants have always had a great mob when they won SuperBowls

except for half the time. Antonio Pierce was not a "great" middle linebacker (are you planning to attend his induction ceremony?, didn't think so) and while I loved Chase no one would even call him a very good mlb.

Same. The difference in football IQ is obvious. Value wise it’s a no brainer. White is a freak athlete who reacts. Bush is just a smart player who’s in a way a tougher tackler. He does often hit a little too high with his pad level. I believe he’s the son of a coach which is usually a good thing.
Pierce is an interesting case.
Big Blue Blogger : 4/25/2019 7:39 am : link
I thought he was great for a couple of months, in 2005. After the ankle injury, he never looked like the same player to me. Watching him chase Westbrook around the next year was kind of sad. He did make the amazing play in Green Bay though, which earned his entire contract, and then some.

I wonder if White knows the Giants play a base 3-4. Doesn't really matter. Playing all three downs, he would be a significant upgrade, wherever they put him.
Pierce was great with respect to the mental part of the game
robbieballs2003 : 4/25/2019 7:56 am : link
That allowed not just himself to play above his talent level but, more importantly, those around him as well. He was the QB of the defense.
The draft makes people
ryanmkeane : 4/25/2019 7:58 am : link
nitpick every single thing about a prospect. White is as close to a sure thing at LB as you'll find. Pick him if he's there and we'll have our leader on D for 8-10 years
Complete BS
ryanmkeane : 4/25/2019 7:58 am : link
that people are saying White's football IQ is low by the way
How quickly we forget Greg Jones.

Re nitpicking, true dat.
FWIW, I'd be fine with White or Bush
NBGblue : 4/25/2019 8:08 am : link
at #6. Either is better than any LB we've had for a long time.

Boley was the best LB in the 2011 run.

Agreed
Trade up to get him

Tampa will draft him

Blackburn was a much better player than given credit for. I remember his rookie preseason being amazed at his field awareness. He was (obviously) somewhat athletically limited but he compensated with instincts and 100% knowing his role in the defense. He was a guy that really made the most of what he had.

Then they can have him. He's good, but not good enough to warrant a trade up. Especially not when Devin Bush is better anyway.

he’s not viewed as a character red flag. actually the opposite is true.

McGinn, for example, polled 14 execs and 13 chose White as their top Off-ball LB. not one mention of misdemeanor case at age 17 where charges were dropped bc nothing unlawful occurred.

he’ll be hard to pass up at #6, although it appears he’s ticketed for #5.
fwiw

Devin Bush isn’t going to slip #17.

Bengals are poised to take him at 11. If he’s on the board, he’s their pick

Good chance he goes earlier to Detroit at 8 or Denver at 10 (Fangio-Harbs connection)

Yes, sadly he will not be there

Are we twinning or something? Me too. I know many people have also said similar but I prefer Bush to White. If we took him at 6 I wouldn't be devastated either. Just worries me that we don't have a true stud defensive end which we need even more than a do it all sick linebacker. However if hes the pick at 6..im good.
Doesn't anyone else think it's funny...
Klaatu : 4/25/2019 10:32 am : link
That a 21 year-old kid is telling Dave Gettleman what it takes to win a championship?

Now that I think about it, I might draft him just for having the balls to say it.
Does that mean the Giants can't win a Super Bowl without a great

of course they can

Pierce isn't a HOFer, but he was great when we most needed it in '07.

Not only did he play a huge part in putting our D in the right positions, we don't win the SB in '07 without that HOF caliber play in GB in the conf Title game, when he took on the OLman and tackled the RB, forcing them to kick FG instead of TD. There's probably no OT win without that play.

I've been a fan since mid 80s and that was one of the most important plays by a Giants individual that I've ever seen.
Justin Tuck
Dr. D : 4/25/2019 11:23 am : link
isn't going to the HOF, but do we win one or both of our last 2 SBs without him?

I bet if you ask Tuck whether Antonio Pierce was great in '07, he would say something like hell yes.

And I know Pierce wasn't drafted and Tuck was a 3rd rounder. My point is, saying a player wasn't great because they're not going to the HOF is silly.
