Dave Gettleman to me/@NFLnetwork: "We want to come out of (1st rd) with 2 legitimate starters....(who) can step in & help us win now." What about a QB, who would sit? "No, he wouldn't (start right away) but it's the position...The worse place u can be is quarterback hell." #NYG
I think Allen and Wilkins...
He means you never draft a QB early just because you feel you need to. It sets your organization back at least another 2 or 3 years.
Pick 17- Greedy Williams/ Devin Bush/ Lawrence/ Wilkins/ Sweat/ Burns
Pick 37 - Jaylon Ferguson/ AJ Brown/ Hakeem Butler
Or
QB Will Grier round 2/ end round 1

Fill us in
He said he wants two starters out of the 1st and that a rookie QB wouldn't start. That's exactly what he said.
Whether he's shooting straight or FOS? That's another question.
I took it as just clarifying that IF they took a QB, that, ok, yeah, HE wouldn't be a starter right away.
Idk, I didn't hear it.
he wants two starters, so that means QB is out.
what does the "but its the position" part mean in that context?
jtgiants, someone posted earlier mentioning that you mentioned possible trades and could mean a player. You’ve said it isn’t Rosen which is fine, is it an OL, WR, DB... can you elaborate? Is it any closer to being done?
Agree 100%. The more I hear him talk, the more I worry about our future.
And I’m still HOPING FOR HASKINS! That stupidity - though I did not listen to the interview - is inherently contradictory. In any event, we’ll find out soon enough.

He's saying a QB would technically not be a "starter" immediately because Eli is the starter... but would obviously be drafted with the intention of being one by season's end or going into 2020.
2) If Oliver is slightly more talented, do you think that his clashes were considered to bring him down, if they rate Wilkins higher?

There is a good overview by Sy in the BBI Draft section.

I think its the leadership qualities and character that separate the 2. Giants higher on Wilks character.
Also Wilks is a bit bigger and better fit on the 3-4DL

1) Can someone give me a snap rundown on why one is preferable to the other or which one is the better talent?

Yeah and he did a great job.
I was kind of thinking of more a head to head type thing. Why specifically one would be chosen over the other.

Yeah, that's what I meant. Thanks.
It means they're not taking a QB unless they do take a QB, and if they do take a QB, he's sitting for a year. DG is very good at doublespeak.
2. The Giants could move down from 17 for a player in peppers mold and the aforementioned picks i just mentioned
this seems like a reasonable interpretation
Great to hear
That's certainly what he keeps saying. He has also at times stated that QBs should not be looked at any differently. He can't really believe that. He must realize that you absolutely have to take positional value into account. I mean you don't make a huge reach but if the QB is rated the lowest of maybe the next 4 or 5 guys on your board, you've got to take QB given our current state of the position. We may not be in QB hell yet but we can feel the heat and we are hurtling closer and closer.
It's as if he's looking for a QB where he has zero concerns about that player. If and when that happens, unless you happen to suck, you'll likely end up in a very expensive bidding war for the right to draft that player.
I hear you. And my reading of the tea leaves tells me he is. If I trusted Gettleman more, I’d be more confident, but I don’t. I also believe that there is at least a decent chance Allen falls to the pick, and he could muck the QB thing up because I could easily see the Giants rating him very highly.
So join with me in HOPING FOR HASKINS!

What do u mean by a player in the peppers mold?
Agreed.
God I hope you're right man, I would be so happy to land one of those 3
I feel like Wilkins is that guy everybody has mocked as a mid 1st round guy, but teams have him as a top 10 guy
It was an answer to a simple question. Not a thesis statement.
Quote:
is if your team keeps hovering around the .500 mark, you are also in QB hell and have a much harsher price to pay to get a good one.
Agreed.
There are a boatload of flaws in his logic. I’m really hoping this is all a smokescreen, but I’m not dumb enough to forget last year, either. So if we pass in a QB, I won’t be devastated like I was last year.
[quote] Why not? Never show your hole card to an opponent or media reporter.
I agree with you but that's not what bothers me. It's his philosophy of how to build a team and his reasoning behind some of the roster moves and draft decisions he's already made that scare me.
Coke? Control the young guys in their up side? Come again?
