I bought in right away with Phil and was a big fan from the very beginning. I had a good friend that was a Giants fan that didn't like him and we would go around and around arguing about him during those early years. He still makes my short list of all time NY Giants favorite players.
and in those pre-Internet days couldn't follow the draft closely. I remember being surprised, but not upset.
At that point, the Giants had been so bad for so long that there was nothing to be upset about. He'd either pan out, and the team would be better, or he'd bust, and we'd be no worse off than we are now. But then, I've never been a "I've-never-heard-of-him-so-he-must-suck" guy.
My dad REALLY wanted the Giants to draft Montana (they were from the same hometown). When the Giants drafted Simms, he yelled, "Who the HELL is Phil Simms and where the [bleep] is Morehead State??!!"
Sadly, my dad died 3 years later and never saw the Giants win a Super Bowl.

I recall reading/hearing that Bill Walsh wanted to draft Simms, was surprised when the Giants drafted him so early, and went to Montana as a fall-back. My father was a life-long, dedicated Giants fan who also died before seeing his team win a SB.
I remember the boos Simms got from the Giants fans at the draft. Â
53.2% completion percentage
six touchdown passes
11 interceptions,
and 1,229 yards.
the Eagles went 2–6–1
Simms finished with 409 completions in 835 attempts for a 48.9% completion percentage.[2] He also totalled 32 touchdowns, 45 interceptions, and a school-record 5,545 yards

As we all know, that pick worked out pretty well.
