Jones does not have to be Peyton Manning. C'mon now. He has to be a really good NFL QB for Gettleman to get the last laugh. Peyton Manning? Gettleman would be executive of the decade if that came true

A QB who's college stats were less than that NFL powerhouse QB Ryan Nassib.

I didn't believe it when I heard it last night, but it is true. Jones' stats were below Nassib who was drafted in the forth round.

Do you guys even think he was worth taking in the first round at all?

clearly they thought someone else would snag him before 17.

I always give benefit of the doubt. At least he didn't play at Moorehead State, right?

I know the Giants did... duh.

I was asking my fellow BBIers if he's first round talent. Don't watch college football AT ALL so I was curious as to what made him so "icky"?
seriously, the EXACT same excuses about supporting casts

We will agree to disagree. The similarities are there
Jones with Duke final season finished 7-6 ACC
Nassib with Syracuse final season finished 8-5 Big East

That 2012 Syracuse team was not exactly a machine. Season highlight was beating #10 Louisville. 2018 Duke season highlight was beating #22 Northwestern. By saying Jones carried Duke last year, one could the same of Nassib in 2012 with the Orange.

I will agree that while stats are not the end all be all. They are important.

Anyway. Does not matter at this point. He will be taking up a roster spot until he either shits the bed or becomes the next one.

Take a listen to Barnwell in the second video here. Even factoring in the drops, Jones' QBR was 36th in his class. 36th! For the number 6 pick!

I watched 4 games last year. Including that shit show that was Wake Forest. He is not at the level of being a franchise QB or a #6 pick. Maybe one day, but right now it looks like another pick on the level of Ron Dayne.

No one serious on BBI has expressed any interest in taking a QB for the sake of it.

The majority of displeasure was the Giants not taking a QB last year, among what's roundly perceived as a much better group of QBs.

I'll argue that last year's class wasn't significantly better.

the 2018 class is so overrated its ridiculous.

loved Baker, Darnold's a turnover machine without an elite arm, Allen's got a ton of talent - accuracy a huge issue, and the almighty Josh Rosen is being shopped by the same team that took him and no one in the NFL is bothering to offer a high pick for him.

but, oh my god we got stuck with the best offensive prospect to come out in years - he just happens to have "RB" next to his name so it was a bad pick to some.

All the adjusted yards statistics that take this kind of thing into account still say he's garbage. And outside of Clemson, he was getting these mediocre stats against the likes of Army, Temple, and Northwestern. Color me unimpressed.

I have a feeling the next four players taken will be good to great players.

When you look back at past drafts, really only 25% of the top 10 picks work out. Just because pros are doing the picking, doesn’t mean they know what they are doing. It’s really an inexact science, but it’s frightening that they are going against the grain so much. The fact that Cincy, Washington, and Denver wanted him doesn’t validate picking him at 6th at all. Those are three organizations with atrocious recent history of picking QB’s.

I am glad so many are lauding this pick. Most have sided with management when it comes to recent moves, pound your chest all you want, we’ve been a lousy organization with the record to prove it.

When the Giants HC search was under way Chris Simms predicted Greg Schiano would be hired as HC of the Giants. Schiano who order his players to cheap shot Eli while he was taking a knee to run out the clock. Greg Schiano who the Giants had not shown a single shred of interest in. That is the coach that Chris Simms predicted for the Giants.
I was shocked at the pick
Kyle in NY : 4/26/2019 4:01 pm : link
in hindsight I probably shouldn't have been. But I thought we were going Allen, had me speechless for a good five minutes.

I'm still lukewarm on it, just don't think it was a good value play. But Jones is taking some unfair criticism from people who have likely never seen him play and are latching onto a few sound bytes.

The more I've dug, I have found some things that excite me. I mentioned in another thread, but I really like the mobility and just enough ability to create with his legs. He's not flashy but he can make some plays if necessary. He's a solid athlete

I like that he seems to be a tough kid who carried a below average roster to 8 wins in the ACC. His numbers would look much better with better skill position guys. Reminds me of when Accorsi watched Eli drag a crappy Ole Miss roster to wins. Toughness, leadership ability, checks all the boxes on the intangibles.

And he seems to have good accuracy in the short to intermediate range. You can go a long way in this league with those traits.

My concerns center around a lack of natural arm talent. That can be schemed around a bit but it is still notable. And just some concerns that we went for the safe, familiar play here going with the guy with connections to someone the Giants feel comfortable with. Going for intangibles over pure talent also makes me nervous.

Sometimes I don't know if Gettelman is just fucking with us but him saying he saw 3 series at the senior bowl and knew he was the guy is just downright frightening. And as I said above, there just seemed to be better value available at 6. But if this guy turns into a 10 year reliable starter than it was a steal.

Going to stay optimistic and I'm willing to see what we've got here. There's a good bit to like about Jones if you can somehow factor out where he was picked. But I can't lie, my initial reaction was frustration.

Check out this video below for a nice breakdown of Jones

closer to the truth that many BBI'ers wanted any QB than the alternative.

How many times have we been told Eli is cooked? That the team can't move forward until we have a QB?

The incessant bitching about passing on Darnold, Rosen and Allen? The mindless complaints that not trading for Rosen is idiocy?

That sure the hell sounds like many posters wanted a QB - and seemingly overrated last year's class.

We pick a QB and the place explodes. BBI is nothing if it isn't consistent....

a fan of Jones at all. Was unimpressed by his play against both Clemson and Wake. Yet I'm fully aware that I know shit about what I'm looking at.

I watched Marvin Harrison's career at Cuse and never saw him as one of the best WR's of his time. Likewise, I kept expecting Eta-Tawa to contribute. Thought Jim Turner would be a very good WR in the NFL.

When it comes to QB's, I thought Rivers throwing motion would never work at the next level. Thought Chuck Long would be a great QB. Thought Brian Hoyer would be very good.

Don't even get me started on RB's I thought would be monsters.

I'm hoping I'm wrong here.

Bob in Newburgh : 4/26/2019 4:36 pm : link
Success or failure of the non-phenom leg talent QBs is largely based on a bunch of stuff we group as intangibles, once certain physical thresholds are met or exceeded.

While throwing the remote, stop and consider that the guy possesses enough of the physical talent traits to be as good as anyone not named Rogers and certainly has more to work with than a guy named Brady.

I do not love the pick. However, I believe that the Giants did not believe he would last until 17.

instance when stepping back feels better than when it happened in real time.

We know the Jets tried to trade down and failed, so they picked Williams. We know the Broncos traded down and the Steelers leapfrogged Cincy to get Bush.

I feel pretty confident that Jones would've gone to Denver and when he wasn't there, they traded. Cincy, Washington and Miami might have wanted him too.

I would have liked to trade down a couple of spots or just take Allen, but I really don't think Jones is there at 17.

The thing that still is the cloud is that the dude has to be able to be a franchise guy. If he isn't, we whiffed.

DonnieD89 : 4/26/2019 5:08 pm : link
DG and PS had a conviction for Jones after the Senior Bowl and before the Combine, when the Kyler Murray story to Cardinals started to evolve, making
Rosen a possibility. They stuck with their conviction in the face of Rosen becoming available. It again tells me they never had a conviction for Rosen. They were never going to trade for him.

Jones has the makeup of what PS wants with his QB. PS is going to develop Jones further. I am intrigued of the prospects of this. Maybe they have something. We will see. Remember too, Jones will have an OLine, a premier running back and quality receivers to work with. This is a luxury Jones has never been afforded.

It's a nice compilation of Jones making NFL caliber throws. You will notice several big drops by his receivers. Link - ( New Window )

Thanks, good watch

I saw that video for the first time a month ago and it completely changed my opinion of Jones. I still wasn't sure if he has franchise QB upside but he definitely has skills.

Neither Cris Carter nor Joel Klatt impressed by Giants taking Jones. Klatt said that he thinks Giants overreached for each of their first round picks.
I've been watching a number of the daily Football shows over the past two months and I've always been impressed by Joel Klatt and he backs up what he has to say with stats. On Daniel Jones, he said that when he played against top opposition, he just didn't show anything, yardage, completion percentage were poor. I'm wondering if Gettleman is ignoring warning signs regarding the limitations of Jones's talent level and is "in love with" his character. It's great he can play under pressure, but can he actually make the passes against pro-level opponents?

How can you be competitive against top opposition, when your teammates are NFL caliber players? It takes 11 players to be successful. Case in point, the game against Clemson. The untalented Duke OLine could not handle the NFL Dline caliber of Clemson. Jones got killed. How can you judge that? Pretty dumb statement by Klatt.

I'm sure this has been said before, I was locked out of the site trying to change a password last night.

I remember listening to the 1979 draft, and when Pete Rozelle read the choice, the boos were overwhelmingly loud. Coach Ray with the Gunfighter Eyes was just coming on board, The Fumble was recent history, Joe Montana was available - this board was not in existence, but I can't imagine it would have been any better than last night.

Sometimes, the professionals know what they are doing.
