Another wasted pick. The Giants don't even need an interior lineman. This is like the Twilight Zone. We pass on arguably the 2nd best DE edge rusher to reach on a QB and then pick a DT over Sweat.

What are you talking about? DL was a major need on this team. In addition, many posters on this site were praying we would draft Lawrence at #17.

DL was a major need? Interior lineman? Really? More than an edge rusher? Or a LB, or a RT? I'm gonna go ahead and respectively disagree.
This is not a sexy pick, but its not a bad pick
.McL. : 2:05 am : link
THe Giants didn't really have a true NT. I firmly believe that Tomlinson's best position is at the 3 technique. I may be in a minority there, but I don't see him as a space eating double team busting NT. He is better when he can penetrate and disrupt. That said, he was serviceable at NT.

What I don't get is DGs fascination at upgrading positions where we have a player, even if they are not ideal. While we continue to ignore positions where we have nothing.

Edge, C, RT, LB, DE, even outside WR. While we picked a good CB in the trade-up, we need more than 1 CB.

We upgraded to a very nice RG, when we could have just resigned the guy we had. Not ideal, but getting a C and/or RT would have a greater impact. Now we upgraded the NT, but could have lived with DT. DE and ER would have a greater impact. Especially when it comes to the trenches, you are only as good as your weakest link...

Lawrence
hitdog42 : 5:39 am : link
Was a sprint to podium guy for the giants. A guy that will set the tone for everyone behind him - and a guy graded very highly - for the giants this is value and addresses a need. He is a stud
Thrilled with the pick...
...would've liked him at 6. Because I fucking HATE a soft interior D. I was raised on Giant D's that rarely gave up 100yds to a back and ruled in short yardage.

This kid is a nightmare. Btw, will improve the linebackers behind him - ++

+1
Lawrence is awesome
ryanmkeane : 7:07 am : link
we gotta set the tone up front and stop getting our shit kicked in and for ONCE start kicking ass up front
Excellent pick
Give Betcher flexibility with a two-gapping NT. As Parcells said, there's only a few of them in the world, at most 3-4 in the NFL.

I was for trading down a bit and taking Vea last year in the top 10, and we got someone equivalent in the mid 1st.
Rex Ryan
was praising this young man. Whatever one thinks of Rexm he knows defense.

DG like a lot of us did not enjoy seeing this team pushed around. This kid helps to stop that.

I welcome such a addition and cant wait to see this team getting tough again.

is a great pick. I thought the Giants might trade down to get extra day two picks, but I'm perfectly fine taking Lawrence at #17. Tremendous run stuffer with some pass rush ability.

I wonder too. I don't think so, but could he be traded, and what would he bring?

Lawrence was one of my main targets for the Dline.. He will free up the backers behind him and take pressure off the DE's some as he will need to be double teamed. He is a force and gives us much needed size up the middle.
Love the Dexter Lawrence pick
ep in md : 9:23 am : link
I have watched almost every nationally televised Clemson game he has played in and the guy can simply play DL, period.

His selection makes D. Tomlinson and BJ Hill position's better. His selection makes the LBs and safety playing closer to the line better.

A very good pick at 17 that I would have given consideration to at 6.
Giants
bc4life : 9:23 am : link
were 20th against the run. It's not like pass rush was the only concern. And he can push the pocket.
This was my favorite pick for the Giants
I love Lawrence and he is going to be a stud NT for the Giants for a long time. This also allows Tomlinson to go back to DE where I feel he is a better fit. I didn't think he played well enough at NT last season after the Snacks trade. I still hope they add another NT or DE on day 3 for depth.

Maybe you should take the next couple rounds off.
Hill-Lawrence-Tomlinson
ryanmkeane : 9:32 am : link
will be awesome. I imagine they will put Lawrence at the 1 and 3 and change him around a bunch. Him and Hill can really push the pocket, and Tomlinson can be the anchor.

Love this pick.
Have to imagine that

Lawrence was rated in the top 12 of this draft for the Giants

I had NT and C as my biggest draft 'wants'.

And not a 'body' at NT, I wanted a replacement for Snacks. Because Run D begins with a solid interior D-Line. Mentioned before, great NT's make linebackers better, but the reverse isn't true.

Watch Ogletree and Goodson now flourish as Lawrence effectively parks a fucking semi in front of them.

I think this defense is actually decent right now. D-Line and Backfield set - pass rush is now the only concern.

We all can pretty much take the next couple of rounds off.
I still would have rather had a pass rusher

Not a fan at all of the QB pick unless he shocks and is Peyton 2.0.

I am giddy at thought of him wearing the jersey and watching him play.

agree but we need to move on.
For those who live in the Philly area
SJGiant : 1:27 pm : link
Ray Didinger, a well known sports writer and evaluator of NFL talent, came on one of the WIP shows and talked about his best player that might fall near the Eagles last Wednesday. He talks about it within the first ten minutes of this podcast (I didn't listen past the first ten minutes. Only so much Philly talk I can take). I feel very good about this pick.

As DG would say, Rome wasn't built in a Day
Simms11 : 2:41 pm : link
but clearly you have to build up the lines before you can build the rest of the team around them. DG has always ensured that the lines were strong. This was an absolute necessity and DLaw will be an anchor in the middle of the defense. That will be a welcome sight.

Not sure we can add to starting LBer corps right now, but we need at least one more starting-caliber LBer. That level of the team is somewhat susceptible and lacking still IMO.
This can be Game-changer,
Nine-Tails : 2:59 pm : link
I was ignorant before in just assigning him a 2 down label. This man can change the way we view nose tackles. Never saw an athlete at his size move like him, he moves like Rashaan Gary off the snap and has violent hands. He will be able to play each position on the d line.

Anyone who, like me, has the notion that hes a 2 down lineman, please dig deeper and watch him.
I'm still stuck on

Sheeeesh. I mean....ooosh...I mean jeeesus.
The foundation
Nine-Tails : 3:13 pm : link
Of the defense, he might become what makes it go. This might be a similar situation as Aaron Donald but in the reverse sense. People thought Donald was too small and wont hold up and here with Lawrence assume he is just a nose tackle that cant rush the passer.

I feel it man, I was mentally prepared for Josh Allen, the total package. But hey, if Jones fails, DG is gone and if not then hey we hit a home run.
But 9
idiotsavant : 3:18 pm : link
It's obviously Mara.

The Getts alone grabs a DT, DE or the OT at 6.

Dint forget, who let Jerry do his thing for ten years?

I agree with that, the owners can't fire themselves, especially with Chris Mara with an active role.

They haven't been able to adapt and are fixated on the Giants way.
Watched a lot of him today
Kyle in NY : 3:35 pm : link
and this pick has me absolutely thrilled. The way this kid can move at his size is rare indeed. And I don't think he's just slated to be a two down run stuffer like I'm seeing a lot of people saying questioning the value of the pick. You can't tell me with that combination of power and quickness that there isn't untapped pass rush potential here. He did have 6 sacks as a freshman.

There's so much to work with here. I do wish we could have paired this pick with one of the edge rushers, but Lawrence on his own is enough to be excited about.

Watch what he does to the guard in the video at 3:08 or the spin move at 3:30

Exactly, I was amazed when I watched him.top 5 athlete in the whole draft.

The 2 down thing is just a label because of his size which many, including I wrongly believed.

Also because Clemson was just so stacked on the DL that they would sub him out even when not needed just because they could.

is actually a guy who could be useful once we are free of Gettleman. This year+ has been a comical waste of resources but this guy might help the next regime.
So..
the guy the useless GM picked might shine when that useless GM is gone?

Awesome fucking logic.
Q Williams rana 4.87 forty at 303
bc4life : 4:47 pm : link
Lawrence ran a 5,03 at 345 pounds and pulled a hamstring during the run. I'm not sure people realize how good of an athlete he is.
Lawrence
Is going to be similar to Snacks Harrison but with more pass rush ability and without the attitude. He is going to be a fan favorite immediately and he will help transform the defensive front.

Dalvin Tomlinson now goes back to his DE spot where he is a better fit. I hope the Giants add more depth on day 3 but I look forward to seeing how the young DL performs this season.

Eric said that there was a poster last night who said that even if Daniel Jones becomes a HoF QB, it was still the wrong pick.

Alright...

I think he is going to be the major piece of the defense for a long time. I also think the Giants should get a back up NT.
If you go through Lawrence's writes, at least one compared him

i loved the 2 defence picks in particular
msh : 5:56 pm : link
lawrence is the engine that ran that defence and he will make the giants front infinitely better the can now kick tomlinson outside and further improve the passrush with hill, lawrence and tomlinson upfront they will be harder to run or pass on

i dont think many realised just how big a need NT and CB where on this team and im glad DG recognised it and fixed it
