If Daniel Jones had no ties to Cutcliffe or the Manning Fam

nyjuggernaut2 : 4/25/2019 11:01 pm
would he have still been the pick? I think Mara had a big day in this, mainly because of his infatuation with Eli and the fact that he believes he's getting Eli 2.0.

i mean....do you think the giants will hand keys to franchise to a guy just because he had the same coach? rthey clearly like his skillset and his ability to lead a team

Honestly, I have no idea what to think with this franchise anymore.
Frankly I don't even want a Manning 2.0

I'm happy for the Super Bowls but winning two Super Bowls as a 10-6 and 9-7 team requires A LOT of luck. He hasn't had a playoff win otherwise. Yes, I'm convinced this has everything to do with Cutliffe.
The more serious part of this
81_Great_Dane : 4/25/2019 11:03 pm : link
is that Cutcliffe was in a position to tell them what he saw in Jones, and probably told them a lot of good things. I don't see a problem with that. It's not like Cutcliffe gets a cut of Jones' contract. There's nothing in it for him to exaggerate or make shit up.

If Eli told John Mara to go jump in the lake, he’d do it.
Gettleman is brutal

No concept of asset management or what league is thinking. It’s comical.

Some of you are fucking dumb. Stupid and dumb.

Yes, the giants drafted this guy strictly because he’s Eli Manning 2.0

First off, you say that like it’s a bad thing.

Second, Jones is NOTHING like Eli other than he’s smart and seems pretty grounded. Again, you say this like it’s a bar thing.

Third, you make it seem like somehow the giants drafted this guy to appease Eli. Really? This guy is replacing Eli. They didn’t do Eli any favors tonight.

Fucking nuts jobs. Think.
Of course the Cutcliffe and Manning connection
Hsilwek92 : 4/25/2019 11:07 pm : link
had a major impact on the decision.

He may turn out to be great or a bust but, anyone who tries say it had no major impact is just fooling themselves.

Again, from the NY Post Article:

It is almost as if the Giants searched for the closest quarterback they could find to Manning. Jones is something of a Manning clone, except coming into the NFL he is not viewed anywhere close to the top-end prospect Manning was in 2004. Jones looks a bit like Manning and was coached at Duke by David Cutcliffe, Manning’s coach at Ole Miss and big brother Peyton Manning’s position coach at Tennessee.

“He’s got a lot of the same mannerisms as Eli,’’ an NFL source and talent evaluator who specializes in quarterbacks told The Post. “After he throws he has the shoulder shrug. Eli will throw it and then kind of shrug his shoulder.’’

Agreed. There is absolutely no way we make this pick without this connection. It is horrific.
Eli knows it’s the last year of his contract
jeff57 : 4/25/2019 11:09 pm : link
Why wouldn’t he want a say in who takes over for him. And who he’ll be, in effect, grooming.

DG doesn’t have a clue about asset mgmt.

Again, more bullshit. Another example of someone so mad over a pick all logical rational thinkjng has gone out the window.

Giants have tons of cap space coming next year. They have the most draft capital in the nfl. They now have a cheap cost controlled young qb in the fold. Asset mgmt?

Some of you get so nuts over “reaches” and value and mock drafts you lose your fucking mind.

Someone tell me again that drafting an mvp rb talent is bad asset mgmt. I’m sure that’s coming. Meanwhile, Barkley is actually one of the best bargains going. But never mind that fact.

absolutely not. This pick happened because of that connection which says a ton about this front office and the ownership of this team. Does anyone here really think their scouts had Jones as the best available player? Hell, even the best available QB at 6?
This is a great question by the OP...
bw in dc : 4/25/2019 11:11 pm : link
Here's how I would put it - if Finley was coached by Cutcliffe at NC St he's likely the 6th pick.

Because I fail to find any material differences that make Jones a better prospect than Finley. Hell, I think Finley is a better prospect...

So what? So they think jones shares some of the same characteristics as Eli. Ok.... so? He’s also a different type of athlete. And again, Eli 2.0 would be a fucking grand slam for us all.

Just hope for the best. Giants weren’t the only team that liked this kid.

That makes no difference if the QB is garbage. Holy hell.
If Jones played at Ohio State instead of Duke this year

Pointless hypothetical. All anyone can do is judge him on what he accomplished where he played at and the results couldn't have wowed anyone. Look at the best QBs in the NFL. Nearly all of them put up superior numbers to this guy regardless of where they played, the level of competition, or what style of offense they played in.

There are certainly exceptions. Brady, obviously, but he was a 6th round pick. Matt Ryan's numbers weren't great, but his team won games at least. Maybe Jones will prove to be one of the exceptions.

It’s called sarcasm. My hypothetical was as pointless as the OP

The two teams that seem to have been very hot for Jones were the Giants (where Eli plays) and the Broncos (where Peyton finished up). Both franchises probably had some deeper info on Jones than most. You're assuming that the Mannings and Cutcliffe sort of fooled Gettleman. Why would they do that? What's in it for them? What if the info they provided on Jones is an advantage, and he's better than most draftniks realize?

I'm not excited by the pick; I would have preferred someone with more college production. But I'll wait and see. To me, having a good network of contacts and direct insight from Eli and Cutcliffe seems like a plus, not a minus.
Anyone who thinks this was strickly a football pick
arniefez : 4/26/2019 1:19 am : link
has no idea what team he roots for or has been listening to the GM talk about being QB of the Giants. For us old guys Jones is the new Tucker Fredrickson. We'll see if the Giants passed over any HOFers for a Mara man this time.
