But how could you expect it to be. I don't recall any Morehead St. games being shown on TV in the NY area. There was no Internet, no 24 hour sports TV networks. I don't think the draft was carried on TV back then.
You woke up the next morning and read in the paper that the Giants drafted someone you never heard of from a school you never heard of - so you were pissed.
the draft wasn't covered like it is now. If the 1979 draft was covered like the 2019 draft there would have been no booing and everyone would have been excited.
Keep in mind two years later 90% of Giant fans wanted Hugh Green over LT because Green played at Pitt and was on TV in NY a lot. There were 2 or 3 TV channels that showed college football in NY.
No ESPN only a few games from a few schools on each week. If you're younger than 50 you can't even fathom the difference from then to now.

Yup, and Bill Walsh knew Simms was good. He said several times that he would have picked Simms with his #1 pick if the Giants didn't do so. It wasn't like Walsh made out poorly though, he only got Joe Montana in the same draft
53.2% completion percentage
six touchdown passes
11 interceptions,
and 1,229 yards.
the Eagles went 2–6–1
Simms finished with 409 completions in 835 attempts for a 48.9% completion percentage.[2] He also totalled 32 touchdowns, 45 interceptions, and a school-record 5,545 yards
The similarities between the Simms draft and this one are eerie Â
