Both of these were huge needs for the Giants.

BTW, the Giants needed a young QB. They obviously like Jones a lot. So, they took him where they felt they had to in order to make sure they got there guy. They obviously liked him significantly better than the other QBs. You all don't agree - WTF do you know?

Who are you playing at QB net year if you don't draft one in the first? You want another mid round flyer that doesn't work out? Or, the mystery QB next year where you have to trade two #1s, plus to get into striking distance? Then what, another year of shitty football playing a rookie?

Well, carry on with your whining...

Did you notice the rest of his draft last year? In the NFL redraft, 3 of his picks were first rounders.

But, go ahead and bitch about a 4th round pick.

Barkley Hernandez.. who was the 3rd?
Baker's a good player, no doubt.

I posted Sy's scouting report on him shortly after the Giants picked him. And it's not like the Giants don't need CB's, because they do. I've written "have you looked at our depth chart, lately" on more than one occasion.

Still, I can't shake the feeling that they made a mistake passing on Jawaan Taylor or Dalton Risner. Hell, even Greg Little. Flashback to Eli Apple over Taylor Decker, lol.

Taylor apparently has a knee and some odd field stuff. I did like Risner, but with 30 or 37 you can fill one or the other. If we get one of the Wisconsin guys or Scharping at 95 and Maxx Crosby in Round 4 the draft looks a lot different.

maybe the best of the 3. I am not sure if they gave up a little much or not, but a residual effect of the rest of the 1st round has me more annoyed at this deal than I should be, given the talent.

Sure they gave the 37 pick but they got the 30th pick. They only really gave up a 4th and 5th rounder. If this kids swagger and abilities are legit, the Giants got great value.

Not to mention I'm pissed at myself since I went to sleep after the 17th pick figuring there is no way the Giants trade back into the first round since they got their QB early. Damn!

figure we can move up to 30 without giving up 37? I’m absolutely baffled by this. We’re we just supposed to give a couple 3rds in exchange for 30?

We were never using all 12 picks. We loaded up on picks for this very reason. But hey, complaining about everything is all the rage these days.

Physical, soft hands, great mirror ability, quick hips, but most of all, he just appears to have elevated field of play football instincts. I'm a fan of this pick.

like Baker a lot, but that is way too much. A CB would have been available at #37. Again, I thought the plan was to get more picks in rounds two and three. Instead all we have now is #95.

But would HE have been available at 37, especially after teams have an entire night and day to re-configure their board?

Giantz_comeback : 4/26/2019 8:46 am : link
We had Deandre Baker as our No. 1 cornerback target for the Giants for several reasons but none more important than his familiarity with the coverage concepts defensive coordinator James Bettcher utilizes frequently -- specifically pattern-match coverage. The Georgia defense under Kirby Smart is very similar schematically to what Bettcher runs. The Giants drafted Georgia outside linebacker Lorenzo Carter and signed Georgia UDFA cornerback Aaron Davis last April. While evaluating those two prospects, they likely saw No. 18 flash.

Baker has earned consecutive 90+ grades from PFF and they charted him with not having allowed a single touchdown in coverage during the 2018 season. In fact, according to PFF, Baker hasn't allowed a touchdown in primary coverage since the 2016 season.

too much to move up 9 spots and get the possible #1 corner in the draft? That really is nothing compared to the picks we have and the value.
Nothing like have the short slow CB

who is somehow rated best CB in the draft. I like this pick the best of the three that DG made but that said none of the three trades make any sense to me at all.

I thought I liked DG but I just can't after this. Even the trade for this pick makes no sense.

So far: not my formula, definitely would not have gone QB with Oliver sitting there. But Dexter and this kid look great.

And there's more coming.

It's not that big a deal. If he's as good in the pros as he was in college you do the trade 10 times out of 10.
I'm assuming Baker starts right out of the blocks.

That's why I'm asking. It's hard to sya if Jenkins lost something last year or was distracted from his off field issues related to the murder at his home. Is Beals good enough to unseat Jenkins? Does it matter, if the loser of that decision is the 3rd CB?
Best CB in the draft period !!!!!!!!!!!

Can't cover ? Where do you live Neptune ?
Too much a 4th and a 5th to move into the 1st round
and solidify the defensive backfield ?
Jack Rabbit goes down who is gonna replace him ?
Seriously . I hope we move up again and I fon't care if we dip
into the 2020 draft to do it and get a RT or possibly
an Edge rusher . Baker is a stud and won't Ole Running backs
he is an aggressive tackler with great hands instincts a
legitimate shut down CB !

wouldn't surprise me if Beal/Baker on outside with Haley in the slot in 2020. I love this trio's upside ... look at that, depth and potential in the secondary.

not to mention the improved safety play - especially n coverage. Peppers/Bethea >>>> Collins/Riley

msh : 4/26/2019 6:16 pm : link
but many believed baker was the number 1 CB so i defer to that but CB was a huge huge need how many games did the giants lose because they had a bunch of scrubs back there and forced collins to play too much coverage he is box safety with limited coverage ability which the redskins will discover this season

i liked collins alot but he was not the complete safety he and his coach talked him up to be and there was now way he was 84mil worth in a million years for a fraction of his price they got peppers full contract and he is a better fit to bettchers scheme. with bethea who also understands the system back there plus baker and beal back plus the extra depth they now have at the position the secondry will be alot better than last year

the secondry was awful last year and this pick was vital going forward especially as DG seams intent of clearing the majority of reeses picks i think shepard, tomlinson and engram are the few guys DG agrees with and plans to keep long term
Possible FS?
Barkley26 : 4/27/2019 7:29 pm : link
Don't be surprised if we move this guy to FS. Not the fastest DB at 4.5 plus, but isn't afraid to tackle and has a nose for the football. With the amount of secondary players that we drafted, I think that 1 or 2 of them will be moved to safety.
