Gettleman knew Jones was the guy at the Senior Bowl...

Quote from the press conference a few minutes ago:

"I loved him after watching three series...I knew he was a professional QB..."

Wow - three series? That's quite a sample size, Dave.

Can we get a count on the times "hand of God" or mocking analytics was authoritatively posted last year?

3 series. At a senior bowl. Versus the 3 years of mediocre 2nd round at best tape.

The odds are against this. There’s 3 years of mediocre tape.

Floor: Blake bortles
Ceiling: Alex Smith when he had all star coaching.
I'll cut him some slack for that.
81_Great_Dane : 4/26/2019 12:47 am : link
It's not like the stopped looking at tape. There's a whole organization and a team of scouts checking the guy out. He had a draft grade.

Plus, let's note that (if this account is correct) he said "professional quarterback" not "Hall of Famer" or "a guy who is going to win five Super Bowls." Geno Smith and Mark Sanchez are professional quarterbacks, too.

I've also had the experience of seeing an audition and knowing instantly that this is a major talent. And he was. Cast him on the spot. He had to drop out of my show because he booked a national tour. Next time I saw him was onstage on Broadway. He's still working in TV and movies.
Let me round out the quote...

Mr Gettleman does not listen to his scouts.

Go back and listen to his story on drafting Barkley.

He says unequivocally that when mayfield went #1 he made up his mind on Barkley and didn’t want any discussion or to waste time.

Dg runs the draft board like a fascist. It’s all him.

Name a time I've ripped people for quotes they give? This place goes apeshit over everything said, and one of the ringleadersof doing that spent most of the 90's slobbering all over Parcells snippets.

They are sound bites. They become memes like "Playoffs?" or "We play to win the game" or "Crown their asses".

They don't become platforms for serious discussion or microanalyzing how deeply they've scouted a player.

I won't even address the obvious difference between a person answering reporters questions and morons on a message board.

The guys on the message board know more about the prospects than any f the reporters asking questions.

They are just spoonfed agent speak and rumors. The message board actually knows if the players have good tape or not.

I can't claim to have watched all the Senior Bowl practices, but those are generally thought to be far more important than the game, and the word from the practices was that Jones disappointed.

Me, too. He and Grier looked dreadful in the drills.

So I have no clue what Gettleman saw. Or which three series...

And no one cares about the game. The scouts leave town Friday night before the Saturday game.

He said that it is important to see players play in games, because the "environment" is important. Evidently, the Senior Bowl was enough of an environment. And after three series, for fuck's sake. In those series, incidentally, he only avoided getting picked twice narrowly. But minor details. He felt like a professional.

DSG evidently thought those three series were better than the show Haskins put on in multiple games, including the Big 10 Title game, where Haskins shredded Northwestern. DSG wouldn't know how Jones played in real games other than watching tape on the guy. That is criminal.

These are not just soundbytes. They are real quotes, and they are horrific. He also said that it is possible Jones will be a franchise QB in time but he could sit for three years.

Honestly, I am questioning whether the guy is of sound mind at this point. I don't know whether he has any idea what he is saying any more.

See, you don't get it. I call him DSG BECAUSE OF WHAT HE HAS DONE. Passing on a QB last year. Mocking the reporter who asked about analytics. Trading OBJ. Drafting Daniel Jones over Haskins. He's Dave Shitbag Gettleman and, frankly, that moniker might be rather nice.

I saw a tweet tonight that crossed out GM as his title and replaced it with "Destroyer of the New York Football Giants".

And you make it sound as if I am alone. The Daniel Jones pick was absolutely horrific and is being almost universally panned. What a jackass this guy is.

Look I have been super harsh about Gettleman for all the reasons you mention. But if he looooved Jones and truly felt he was a franchise guy... then he did the right thing. He was 5’11 his sophmore year of HS, ended up being 6’5. First priorirty was basketball, fell in love with football. Broke his wrist pretty badly springtime of his junior year, missed all of the showcases. Ivy schools loved him. He told his dad his junior year “i want to play for Coach Cutcliffe. Duke is on the way up”. HS coach made one last call, Cutcliffe wanted him but “had no scholarships”. Greyshirted, after 2 weeks they had a scholarship for him.

This is why posts like yours sound so idiotic. And thats coming from someone who hasn’t wanted Jones at 6. That kid seeked out that program and Cutcliffe. Could have taken a scholarship to Princeton, but he bet himself. How on earth can you hate on that story?

Some of you sound like morons when you say these kids have noodle arms and they suck. Again, i didn’t want Jones at 6. The leaps some are taking here is ridiculous though.

6:45-9:45.

I watched it live. I remember the almost interception and the Isabella TD, which impressed me for Isabella's burst.

On second look, Jones seems to move his feet well. The fake handoff and roll to right come off as somewhat mechanical upon repetition.

He also seems decisive, perhaps overly so on the almost INT, as though he had his mind made up where he was going.

three series - ( New Window )

He seems decisive because he is: he ran an absurd amount of one read concepts.

Quote:
Jones was primarily asked to execute 0/1-step drops, RPOs, screens, and rollouts, concepts that generally indicate simpler, or even singular, reads. He did so on a whopping 72.6% of his dropbacks, the eighth-highest rate among 164 quarterbacks who dropped back 100+ times in 2018. To give you an idea of how that might translate to the NFL, Nick Foles had the highest rate of 43 NFL quarterbacks at 58.3%. Only two other quarterbacks did so at a rate above 50%, and the average rate among quarterbacks who dropped back at least 100 times was 33.8%.

in Shurmurs offense that could be a boon, but it does put some of the pro-ready comments into perspective. One article had a quote he threw to non-primary reads on only 6% of his throws but, while you can see a ton of single read snap and throw stuff in the cutups that number doesn't ring true.

There are guys here that have created a narrative and will spin anything Gettleman does or says to fit the narrative.

That said, as a fan who has wanted a quarterback since last season, Jones at 6 seems like a reach, but that s only based on the criticism coming from the media last night and today. Personally I have little idea as to if he was worth that pick.

It's not the soundbite as much as it is his out & out arrogance that he's smarter than everyone in football. His quote a few days ago about "going to 7 Super Bowls" so he knows what he doing, reeks of arrogance.First, none of those were as a winning GM-his rings are based on others' decisions & his one as the GM,he lost.He constantly contradicts what he says & then puts down the reporter that calls him out on it! Please don't bullshit the fanbase that Jones & Allen had the exact same grade(And I'm a pro-Jones guy). This draft is his Waterloo along w/John Mara. Mara wanted comfy & brought Gettleman back rather than bringing in someone outside the box. More & more I feel John is turning into the 1970's Wellington & those of us who experienced that, know it's not a good thing!I hope we all can look back & say we were wrong & Gettleman was indeed a football genius. Not just feeling that right now!

Rich Gannon and Ronde Barber were often asked about their thoughts on prospective players and their chances during OTAs and minicamps. They both could tell within minutes, who could play at the next level and who would find the next level was too big for them. It’s more than just physical stuff that professionals can assess future players on. Barber would often say, he could tell immediately just by a look on a player, whether he has the mental capacity to do well in the pros.

I trust there are plenty of present and former players who can tell this. Call it BS or folly or whatever you care to, but pros know most of the time who has it and who doesn’t. They have been at this virtually their whole life.

If DG said he “knew” I now know what he and others are really talking about.
One thing's for sure. This pick will be a good test of how well
