NYG Day 2 Approach

Sy'56 : 4/26/2019 8:09 am
I will wait until next week to discuss the analysis of the 2019 draft class.

With NYG off the board until #96 overall, there will be 62 more players will be off the board. That is a ton of players to see crossed off the board and near-impossible to predict who will be there. So I will go through the positions I think are in play and some of the names that NYG will be hopeful for.

I think the top positions NYG will be looking at will be OLB, WR, ILB, and OT. No matter the case, you aren't really looking for a starter at that point. You are looking for depth, a guy you want to develop in to a starter within 1-2 years, and a guy that can impact the game in situations and/or special teams.

At OLB, I think the cupboard will be bare especially if the focus is a pure pass rusher. Ben Banogu or [b[Jachai Polite[/b] would be a godsend but I can't see them being there. I also don't expect Chase Winovich to be there but the wrist injury uncertainty could bump him down a tad in to trade-up territory, which I do think is still an option when the 3rd round begins. If NYG can fit a 4-3 DE type player in to the scheme, Jaylon Ferguson, Austin Bryant, Maxx Crosby are all options. The realistic 3-4 OLB names that I think will be there and will peak NYG interest are Alabama's Christian Miller and Georgia's Deandre Walker.

At WR, I think NYG will be targeting size and/or speed at some point. The run on WRs is coming, so you will see a bunch of names disappear tonight. The names that I think will definitely be off the board are AJ Brown, DK Metcalf, JJ Arcega Whiteside, Paris Campbell, Deebo Samuel, Riley Ridley, Hakeem Butler, Gary Jennings. I think NYG could be looking at Jamal Custis, David Sills if they want more size and ball skills, while a name like Darius Clayton is the kind of deep threat that could add the needed downfield dimension to the arsenal. Also keep an eye on Buffalo's Anthony Johnson.

The ILB spot, I wouldn't be at all surprised to see the team want to go int o battle with Ogletree and Goodson. But if they want more athletic ability in coverage and on 3rd down, a spot they have been getting killed at for years, I think Drue Tranquill will be there and don't count out the small guy Benn Burr-Kirven, they could use a guy that is all over the place and this 3-4 DL they have is going to keep linebackers clean. A guy like that could rack up 10 tackles a week. Another name to keep an eye on, Blake Cashman from Minnesota. Many in the league like him.

Lastly, even though it sounds like Remmers will be brought in with Wheeler being the backup/swing guy, I think NYG will have OT on their mind. Safety net for Solder if he has another poor season and Remmers/Wheeler is a gamble. NYG needs to be strong on the outside. Assuming the won't be looking for a 2019 contribution from this OT, a couple of guys that are interesting to me in that they have starter upside but need a year to build up their bodies are USC's Chuma Edge and Northern Illinois' Max Scharping. Can't be sold either will be there though. I think NYG will like Elon's Eli Udoh and South Carolina's Dennis Daley. And what about OC? Elgton Jenkins and Erik McCoy won't be there but keep an eye on Alabama's Ross Pierschbacher

Could they end up taking a TE value that drops? Safety? Sure. Do I think there is a chance they trade up from 96 in to the 70-75 area? Yes. But remember, the holes on this roster all plentiful and the best way to fill them is with picks.

Boykin?

It is possible but he won't be a year one guy at all

What about Micheal Dieter? Can't he play RT, C or G? What's your thought on Edwards at RT or Bobby Evans. Could they be available?

He is a versatile guy, yes. But I think he projects inside in the NFL

You've killed it again this year, thanks again and congratulations.

I agree I wouldn't trade Engram. Janoris Jenkins would be the movable piece. I think a team would only want to give up a 3rd for him at most, but perhaps if we included a pick in this draft or next we could get back into the 2nd round.

I really hope so.

Sy - do you think that with so much CB talent remaining on the board, that they could double-dip at the position?

I think so...all options are open and NYG is pretty thin at corner to begin with. Would it be ideal? No.
Whichever

I remember reading that Bettcher used to like a safety type as a LB in the moneybacker role. If that is true, is there a safety that you believe could make the move to LB in this draft that would give us some better coverage from the LB position? If so, what guys fit that critera? Thanks.

That might be the plan for Peppers

Unsure if you follow any of the NFL rumors, but it looks like the Cards are going to take Byron Murphy. I remember you saying he should be the pick right before Baker was announced.

Baker and Murphy and Ya-Sin were right next to each other on the board. I think all 3 will be solid pros...prefer Murphy
I hope we get Winovich

You may have said this but who would your pick have been? I saw you mention trading for Rosen, but if that wasn't an option, who would your picks be at 6, 17, and 30?
My current worry
Beer Man : 4/26/2019 3:16 pm : link
is that two of the teams biggest holes haven't been addressed (OL, ER), and the Giants have to watch 62 picks come off the board before they select again. I hope they have a trick or two up their sleeve. I would hate to come out of yet another draft without addressing the OL.

They can't fix every hole in the draft. They are clearly confident in Markus Golden and Lorenzo Carter improving the pass rush.
With three first round picks at the top, middle, and bottom of 1st
Ten Ton Hammer : 4/26/2019 3:24 pm : link
It seems very clear the team simply doesn't agree that OL is a primary concern now.

I'll take that for now. But OL, C and RT are big issues, and this is a draft with a lot of OL value still on the board; most of which should be gone before the Giants pick again.

If the Remmers rumors are true the Giants are in good shape along the offensive line for next season. I think they will draft two offensive linemen over the final two days. There are plenty of intriguing names that could be available for them in rounds 3-5. Max Scharping, Beau Benzschawel, Trey Pipikins, Yosh Nijman, Hjate Froholdt, Nate Davis, Mike Jordan, Lamont Gaillard, Chuma Edoga, Oli Udoh, Bobby Evans, David Edwards, etc. Personally I hope they draft a developmental OT and C on day 3.

Trade the bulk of our 2020 picks to move up tonight. It's not like we'll need them to trade up for a QB. Besides, we'll be swimming in free agent cash next year, so who cares if we only have a few picks?

They seem to have no concept that it's a market. The cascading effect when you reach for skinny talent early, then 'just happen to miss' the wide body talent the rest of the way down.

Good move on the Dexter then though.
Thank you Sy, great work!

While I suspect (and partly hope) you're being tongue-in-cheek, I wouldn't be averse to using a mid rounder next year as part of the package to move up tonight. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if that is what happens.
If you figure

Could be but Gettleman specifically mentioned him as a safety and also talked about a deep safety.

Removing him from the equation, are there any players this year that could fit that mold? Most of these safeties seem pretty light.
It would be nice to move up ..

even if its a 2020 pick to finish the O-line
I realize we can't fix everything but getting another
tackle that can start Barkley will feast and they will
have to crowd the line and really open things up ..

I'm serious. I could have understood if the Giants were trying to acquire more draft capital for 2020, with the idea of moving up to take a QB, but clearly they weren't, and they've got their "QB of the future" with a major investment.

However, this team is still woefully devoid of talent, and instead of waiting until Day 3, I'd rather see them sacrifice next year's draft for some more picks this year. It's like in 2004, when they gave up a lot for Eli and only had four picks in 2005 (and no 1st Rounder). Now, they made the most of those picks, but they also signed three key free agents, Plax, Pierce, and McKenzie.

This draft is still deep at positions that could really help the team. Why not take advantage of that?
WHY move up?
M.S. : 4/26/2019 4:51 pm : link

WHY?

This team needs a couple more Drafts before it returns to respectability.

We need our picks. And not just for this Draft. But for next year's as well.

And beyond.

We got holes. Plenty of them.

Why? Because this is a talent-rich draft at positions where we could use an infusion of talent. Why not take advantage of that?

was going through your evals and noticed you didn't say anything on Terrill Hanks. What is your take on him for day 2 and 3? Pros and cons? Thank you.
with most analysts stating that this draft is very deep
dd in Mass : 4/26/2019 5:29 pm : link
I would use any or all of my 5th 6th and 7th round picks to move into the 4th round. Even if that means using a late round pick from 2020.

We still need an edge rusher and an OLineman.

Those last 4-5 draft picks are camp fodder, if there is a potential starter in the 4th round at a position of need go get him DG.

The insinuation is that we'd trade the one we already have and then the comp pick would replace it. (It would be lower in the round, but that's the basic idea)
Are we even getting a comp pick after paying to get Tate?
