What Does Lawrence Mean for Tomlinson?

Capt. Don : 4/26/2019 8:13 am
Before I ask about Tomlinson...for the "We traded Snacks for a 5th just to take his clone at #17 overall." I think that is a real oversimplification of what happened.

First of all, I think Lawrence is/will be a better pass rusher than Snacks. Also, Snacks was becoming a malcontent in the locker room and was 31 years old.

What I do think is interesting is that DG justified the Snacks trade by saying that it allowed Tomlinson to move to his more natural position.

Now what? Is Tomlinson our new 5T? Is he depth for Lawrence? That is a position you need depth for. Or is he a possible trade option?

I also think this might mean they really like RJ McIntosh and probably think more of Pierre Olson than we do.
I think this is my thought as well...

we traded Snacks to move Tomlinson into NT. Maybe they did not like his production against the run. Plus not much pocket push movement...not sure...but you can never have too many good guys at any position.

Should be interesting to see what Bettcher does if the Giants keep Tomlinson.
Versatility...

I can see them rotating out since both of them are huge. I can also see Tomlinson playing snaps at the DE spot.
I think

Tomlinson goes into the edge rotation. He’s more of a run stopping DE than a pass rusher.

If you pay attention to snap counts, most teams rotate their DL to the point where their top guys play 65-75% of the snaps. You need multiple capable bodies that play the same spots and that is assuming everyone stays healthy and we all know that rarely happens.

Tomlinson will primarily play the 5 technique but both he and Hill can alternate between the 3 and 5. McIntosh and newly signed Olsen will back them up.

This is a VERY good run defending group.
It means he'll have a buddy

Is better at the 5 anyway. I think Hill and Tomlinson at the 5 and Lawrence at the 3 is massive upgrade from last year, as long as Hill continues to develop.

Lawrence at 0 that should say
I think he's much better suited as a 5 tech (3-4)

or as a 3 tech in a 4 man front. I love this group as run stoppers with surprising athleticism.
But isnt a 3-4....more dependent on LBers?

It’s all relative. Your NT needs to collapse the middle for those LBs to shoot the gaps.
I'll say this, Lawrence has more burst than

Snacks ever had. Snacks was a great player at gumming up the middle, but his efforts were more unnoticed. Lawrence, can be a guy who can really collapse the middle of the defense and make QB's uncomfortable trying to step up.

Lawrence lined up at safety in the spring game once and actually looked good doing it.
Why

are people upset that Lawrence is a Snacks clone? Snacks was an all-pro DT. Now we have Snacks back minus the divisive locket room presence and the boatload of money owed.
Lawrence is better than Tomlinson
Greg from LI : 4/26/2019 9:39 am : link
And Tomlinson is pretty good. Building depth in the interior line is never a bad thing.
this should significantly improve the line
UConn4523 : 4/26/2019 9:42 am : link
and allow Tomlinson to take on a role he's better suited for. He's a quick, strong, beast of a man and I think he and Hill next to Lawrence will be very exciting to watch.
You guys were all jerking "Snacks" off
HomerJones45 : 4/26/2019 9:42 am : link
until he got traded, now he's an old malcontent. Check.

Agreed. Rotating the big guys to keep them fresh will be a nice change, and might help with the weekly fourth-quarter collapses. Is there enough pass rush with Golden, Carter and a few other marginal contributors? Dunno. But Tomlinson was never a big factor there anyway.

This. He will play the 5 and move to 3 in 4 man fronts and that suits him.

Our DL is coming together. I don't think they will move Tomlinson. It is a position of strength now, I think.

BJ Hill, Tomlinson, McIntosh, Lawrence, Pierre (they seem to like him).

Need some Edge help - Carter, Golden, Carter currently, need some folks to push them. Carter had 4 sacks in limited time...maybe he has a breakout season. We need him to.
