The Jones/Haskins debate will be fun-

Sean : 4/26/2019 8:24 am
These QB’s will be linked together. Division rivals. This will be fun to watch play out & certainly adds a lot to the Giants/Redskins rivalry.

One thing I do find exciting about Jones - the Giants clearly love this kid and have a strong conviction on him. If he was drafted at 17, I guarantee you people will say, “why didn’t you take him at 6 if you like him so much?” Well, they clearly like him. Going to be fun watching it play out.
That’s the Key: If you have a strong conviction
Big Blue '56 : 4/26/2019 8:27 am : link
then that’s the reason you pull the trigger. Polian, Brandt and Kirwan have been saying that for years and that’s how they GM-ed
Battling for 3rd and 4th place annually might not really be fun.

shit out of Haskins..
Why didn't they take him at 6?

if they like him that much - so true ... : )
Especially with the Washington Times story
Jay in Toronto : 4/26/2019 8:28 am : link
that many of their evaluators preferred Jones.
didn't like the pick

but I do believe Jones will be better than Haskins.
Haskins has a chance to start day 1
superspynyg : 4/26/2019 8:29 am : link
Jones won’t start till 2020. We won’t be able to evaluate him until he has at least 3 years as a starter (maybe 2 if he is either a stud or a complete flop). Which means we may be in Qb hell for years.

Jones will be playing next year if the Giants aren’t winning. Shurmur’s quote about Eli playing to ensure Jones doesn’t play is very telling.
Yes. And on top of if - the Giants passed over Haskins for Jones
ZogZerg : 4/26/2019 8:32 am : link
Haskins will be gunning for the Giants twice a year.

Will they both be good?
Will they both suck?
Will one clearly be better than the other.

I wonder who the skins next coach will be? Because I'm 100% certain that Gruden didn't want Haskins.
I wouldn't have taken either at 6
David B. : 4/26/2019 8:33 am : link
But Haskins scared the heck out of me. He seems like a boom or bust guy with a really small sample size. Jones doesn't. If the Giants turn out to right about Jones -- and the glass is half-full rather than half empty, he DOES check more of the kind of boxes they're looking for than Haskins.

Good point. Haskins probably has a higher ceiling. I could see him being really good. But, I could also seem him busting. So much talent at OSU. I can see Jones being a game manager type and hopefully much better. I think floor is higher.
It’s beyond Jones vs Haskins....
bw in dc : 4/26/2019 8:41 am : link
It’s Jones vs Haskins & Darnold & Rosen.

Since we passed on better QB talent last year, that still carries over.

To me, both the Giants and the Skins reached for these guys. It’s just that we reached much, much more.
for all of Eli's career
bluepepper : 4/26/2019 8:42 am : link
it's been impossible to say nice things about Rivers or Ben without it being taken as an insult to Eli by a good chunk of BBI. Have a feeling we're in for the same with Haskins-Jones unless one clearly outplays the other. Not remotely fun at all. If a guy can play he can play no matter if he's on a division rival. Pretending otherwise is stupid IMO.

better qbs last year iyo. You’re a fan(?), you are entitled to an opinion, but you know shit compared to the guys who do this for a living. Really, you know shit. Doesn’t mean we didn’t fuck up, only time can tell, but seriously, you’re a very bright guy who knows shit compared to the pros. But, carry on.

Why the Broncos passed on Haskins as well. Bengals also.

My gut feeling is that at least the Bengals wanted Jones, possibly the broncos as well. Once jones was gone, they wanted nothing to do with Haskins.

I wanted nothing to do with Haskins, guy screams Jamarcus Russell product of his team. No thanks.
Who really knows if the Bengals wanted one of the QB's, or any of them
barens : 4/26/2019 8:58 am : link
at all.
A lot was mad about Haskins and the rush
bronxgiant : 4/26/2019 9:22 am : link
but I kept seeing a guy who gets rid of the ball very quickly, who reads the defense very well and throw the ball where his receivers were always in position to catch and run. I actually see a lot of Marino in his release in the pocket.

Jones on every long pass had to have room in the pocket to pat the ball and take a few steps forward to release. Long windup to release. Really hope he turns out great though.
Haskins is going to be a bust .....

Not sure jones will see the field at all next yr..say giants are 2-8, the mantra will be same as with lauletta, webb, etc..."he's not ready to play yet"..or "we are trying to win games and Eli gives us the best chance"
Add Darnold to that list
steve in ky : 4/29/2019 6:03 pm : link
I think Jones will be compared to both of these guys throughout his career.

Neither Webb nor Lauletta were taken 6th overall. Completely different prospects, completely different expectations.

If we're 2-8, the "trying to win games" stuff won't fly either.

I can almost guarantee you if we're 2-8, Daniel Jones is going to be under center.
I think it will end up being more Jones/Darnold

I doubt Haskins lasts long enough as a viable starter to enter into any kind of long term debate. People say that Jones needs some time on the bench to learn - if Jones needs a year of that, Haskins needs three. And unfortunately for Haskins, he landed in the worst possible place. Snyder will treat him as special and above the team, and Haskins doesn't appear to be mature enough to handle that.

Kyle Crabbs of The Draft Network identified the Virginia game as Jones's worst film. I've watched that game 3 times since it became clear in February that Jones was in play. I'd advise everyone to watch that (linked below). You'll see a guy with great mechanics that are consistent throughout the game - pass #1 looks like pass #40. He's accurate and clean in the short and intermediate areas. And I'd add that he followed this game with what Crabbs called his best film, at Pitt.

I'm confident we got the right QB in this draft, and we got him at the right spot. The QB transition is being bungled by the front office, but that's got nothing to do with what Jones is.

Good stuff GT. Jones looks pretty solid. Fundamentally sound. Polished. Kinda like Eli coming out. This may be a much better pick than the masses think.

Exactly. If I had a stud like Dalton I wouldn't be thinking QB in the draft.
Our defensive line will need to coat their arms in Stickum

just to tackle Haskins. With the volume of sweat he produces, we will just slide off.

Whenever I watch videos of Jones like this, I feel so bad for him, so many drops that make you go, “How did you drop that!?” and looks like he’s going up against the 2000 Ravens or in the 49’er NFCCG every single play. That Duke team was terrible. But I see a lot of things I like about him each one I see.
