Dexter Lawerence vs. Josh Allen

George from PA : 4/26/2019 9:34 am
I am not debating if Jones was the right QB.....that debate will not be answered for years.

My only issue was we could have had both Jones and Josh Allen, if DG played it right.

Sell me on the Dexter vs Josh.
2 truths. Stop the run vs presser the QB.

I like Dexter but feel...players like him can be found.

But

Players like Josh Allen go quickly, imo
it comes down to position value

a productive edge rusher is more valuable and its not debatable because look at what good edge rushers get on the open market. Frank Clark/Von Miller. If you can get to the QB you get paid.

Even the best run stuffers cap out at some point. Lawerence is a really good player don't get me wrong but at the end of the day he's mostly a 2 down player in todays NFL, you don't have to break the bank for that type of player to supplement your team in FA.
The real comparison is going to be

If we’re in the top 3 next year and could have had:

Allen, Lawrence, Baker, Tua Or Fromm instead of Jones, Lawrence, Baker and the 3 pick.
Good question players like Allen are harder to find, but their impacts

could be similar. If Lawrence is Linval Joseph, that's a boost to the defense. That is worth a first in any draft, and a high one at that. He is the size of Marcell Dareus, and perhaps that's the more appropriate comp given that he'd been drafted more recently?

I probably would have gone with the chalk pick and taken Allen at #6 - especially since they supposedly really liked him, but I will say I think he may be less of a surefire impact player day 1 than people think. The tools are there but it took him a few years of CFB before things clicked. He wasn't a guy who stepped on the field and just dominated from day 1 as compared to some of the other recent stud defenders who were DPOY candidates very quickly. He was asked to do a lot of different things and perhaps if he gets focused on just becoming a pass rusher he has a lot of room to continue improving rapidly, or he could end up being just a solid player along the lines of Anthony Barr.

So net-net I think Lawrence is possibly the safer pick, though likely lower upside. Signing Danny Shelton may have had a comparable impact on the field whereas I think you'd get a much higher ceiling with Josh Allen as compared to signing someone like Shane Ray.

This is not true anymore.
The reason Lawrence may be at least as valualble...

Lawrence can play the NT position in the Bettcher Defensive scheme. having a young, solid NT is a excellent fit. Too bad we don't also have a prolific edge rusher or a lot or NFL quality starters at linebacker, but we knew this defense had a lot of holes to fill.
