I posted this on the Jones thread but think it's worth it's own.
Papa said last night he thinks Denver wanted Jones at #10 and that's why they traded the pick right after the Giants took him (because Jones was no longer available).
Team gambled that Jacksonville as a 4-3 team would not take Josh Allen who is a better scheme fit for 3-4 and the deal would be in place for #8. If the Giants pass on Jones you give Denver or Cincy the chance to offer a better deal to move up to #8.
How much do you want to bet that if Washington took Jones BBI would be screaming how we blew it.
The real fact is that no one knows who will be better. The Haskins/Jones/Lock (putting Murray who will be a bust aside) decision is a crap shoot. The Giants wanted a QB (like BBI was screaming for), and decided they wanted their money in this crap shoot on Jones.
Why can't people just take this and move on? For every "well he sucked vs WF" video, there is also compelling data to support the pick. Same I'm sure with Haskins and Lock.
Vrentas and Papa are drawing reasonable inferences from events. Â
Papa is a member of the the Giants' press community, not a Broncos' source. What about previous reports (more credible) from several sources that the Broncos didn't want a QB at 10 whatsoever, so as not to jerk Flacco's chain?
for a month. They probably loved Jones as much as the Giants and used the Lock interest as a smokescreen. When Jones went at 6, they bailed.
Good point.
Jones was never making 17.
So for the "Take Jones at 17" crowd, that was never going to happen.
If you just hate Jones as a prospect, what QB should the Giants have taken? I guess no QB? Then we role the dice on a rookie next year. Some plan that is.
But I woke up this morning to the local media absolutely freaking out that they didnt draft Haskins at 10. Bronco fans are QB crazy; they wont be happy until they have another Elway (thats on the field Elway; Off the Field Elway is having a lot of issues with the fan base:)
Yeah day after trying to make jones a hot comodity Â
The Broncos just had their first back to back losing seasons since some time in the 1970's. Yeah, putrid organization there, Greg:). Who the hell would want that?
RE: Yeah day after trying to make jones a hot comodity Â
Yes, I would say the Broncos are not the franchise I'd want to emulate. Aside from signing Peyton Manning, a decision a chimp could have made, they have been the definition of QB hell for a long time.
RE: RE: Makes perfect sense. Denver was tied to Lock at 10 Â

Considering the fact that there are several QBs in next year draft who are much better than Jones, it would have been a much better plan.

Paterson, this is too logical an explanation for the majority of BBI. I am amused by all the consternation given the fact that Jones to the Giants has been discussed the entire draft season. It happens, and now a huge portion of the Giants fan base and the national media are freaking out. Many of whom have been calling for Eli's head for years. Comical.
Here's the difference between Simms and Jones on draft night. The rest of the NFL knew exactly who Phil Simms was and no one in the league thought he was over drafted.
He's been their GM for 8 years and 4 of them he had Peyton. Under his watch, he's drafted ONE QB (Lynch) in the first round and that was late in the first (26).
Drafting QBs is a crap shoot and it often helps to have high first round picks which the Broncos haven't had (because they've been good until the last couple yrs).
RE: So the GM that drafted Tim Tebow and Paxton Lynch in the 1st Â
Daniel Jones became this much-sought-after top 10 talent. What happened between his crappy football season and the draft last night that suddenly made all these teams want him? As far as I heard he was a 3rd round pick when all was said and done at the end of the 2018 season.
if Jones was the guy...you take him at 6 and don't try and get cute.
The Giants needed the right QB....not just the most talented. I think that is why the did not bring in Rosen or Haskins who both seem to have some negative intangibles. Report that Haskins charged people to get into his draft party. That screams issues to me.

A lot of people would say the rest of the NFL knows Jones too. As a thread above says the league thinks more highly of him than the media.
Same old shit. Every time they take someone that might be criticized, it was because some other team was going to jump in. It was probably the Eagles whispering in Jawn's ear again.

I don't think the point is that those teams wanted him, so good choice. But rather, the Giants had a conviction and didn't want to wait till 17 because Jones would be gone
RE: Not exactly helping me like the pick any better. Â
Prior reports also said the Redskins were interested.
They moved down ten spots, picked up another second and third in 2020.

Well, thanks for explaining that, Gomer!

Yeah what have the Broncos done lately? (SB just a few years ago?)
Good point.

Giant fans hated it. Phil who? From Morehead State? WTF?
Then later, people found out that the great Bill Walsh wanted Simms (and had to settle for that other guy in the 3rd round).

He didn't draft Tebow (it was before he was GM), but go on..

He's the one who got rid of Tebow.

Yes. To us feels like it’s forced but to them it feels like he probably wouldn’t be there at 17.

Nothing will. However will you move on?
