The Ringer shreds our first round pick of Jones

montanagiant : 4/26/2019 10:11 am
I know its the Ringer but some very valid points:
Quote:
It is hard to emphasize how bad of a pick this was. Virtually every talent evaluator agrees that Jones was not the second-best quarterback in the draft. Our expert Danny Kelly included Jones in his top 100 big board… at no. 100, making him a late-third-round or early-fourth-round prospect. The Draft Network had him at no. 99. Pro Football Focus had him at no. 70. SB Nation’s Dan Kadar had him at no. 73. Kinder analysts had him in the top 50, or even the top 32. I didn’t see any prospect rankings that considered him one of the best 20 players in the draft.

But did Kevin Clark write it? I want to punch the dude in the face. Seems like an absolute tool.
Our expert Danny Kelly?
mittenedman : 4/26/2019 10:14 am : link
LMAO.

The NFL has spoken. Jones was the 6th pick in the draft. And now the amateurs who had it wrong are crying and saying they know more.

This is really getting pathetic.
The pick will continue to be shredded
Mike from Ohio : 4/26/2019 10:15 am : link
until Jones proves them wrong. It's on him now to make them look foolish.

The point of the article is that no draft review had Daniel Jones anywhere near number 6. Not the Draft Network, not PFF, not Kinder. No one.

Now, could they all be wrong, but our front office be right? Of course!

But what are the odds?

Football Outsiders put it best. "The Giants finally drafted the replacement for Davis Webb."
Ringer has good NBA coverage
Oscar : 4/26/2019 10:17 am : link
And bad NFL coverage. Kevin Clark and Robert Mays think they are the smartest guys in the room, their know it all approach is tough to take. This comes from someone who reads that site (and Grantland) a lot and listens to a lot of Bill Simmons and the broader Ringer podcast network. Ringer NFL show has usually been a hard pass for me.

Don't care...

Agree 100%. Their NBA content is great. I don't mind Mays, but Kevin Clark...he's up there with Leonard for me. A total tool.
God damn we get lit up in that article

But sadly since DG took over, we’ve had an alarming number of times where we’ve been the butt of jokes.
He has a lot to prove to make this
GuzzaBlue : 4/26/2019 10:24 am : link
a good pick. He best be a top-ten QB in the league at some point or this could be a total failure.

It just seems like there is so much for this kid to overcome to make the pick worth it. And stop with the take him at #17. They obviously liked him a ton. If you wait to 17 on a QB you like that much, that is idiotic.

Man IMO DG could have crushed this draft...

Trade up for Sweat

Or swap taking Allen at 6 and Ford/Taylor trading back into the first
If you're looking to the media
AcesUp : 4/26/2019 10:24 am : link
to validate this draft for you then you're barking up the wrong tree. This team is going to get hammered in the draft grades department. The good news is that even most of the guys making those draft grades will tell you how worthless they are.
I think when you make publish rankings
Essex : 4/26/2019 10:24 am : link
you should publish what makes you an expert in full disclosure. Maybe the guy worked for five teams and wanted to spend more time with his family or maybe he is just some guy who has never done this for a living working out of his basement. Rankings matter. The one thing about PFF is that they are business, that is why despite the grief they get here, I at least value the fact that they have a business model that is designed toward ranking players and their credibility matters. The Ringer wants you to click

the Draft Network, PFF and Kinder?

Again, the real pros have spoken. He went #6 and other teams were interested. And guys like Brandt, Kiwan etc didn't bat an eye lash. Also add David Shaw the HC of Stanford to the list. Said Jones is a great fit in NY and "he could be a really good player in a year". Thought is was a great pick.

So honestly, who gives a sh#t what amateur draft sites think now? They had minor utility before the draft, now they are useless. And of course angry they had it wrong and still unwilling to concede they don't know as much as the NFL does. It really is pathetic.

And we'll see who's right, won't we? Too bad if our front office is wrong and everyone else who covers the draft is right our team will have been set back 3 or 4 years.

We reached. Won’t know for about 2 years if it was a good reach or a shitty one. But the consensus by 99% of people that actually analyze this sport for a living is that we reached.

And it’s okay for members of the Giants community to not like it. It’s okay if you do like it. It’s okay for us all to not agree. We don’t need more “OMG i can’t believe this site, I can’t believe these posters”.

We all are humans with fucking opinions. This is a forum. WE ARE SUPPOSED TO HAVE OPINIONS!! Quit bashing posters because their opinion is different than yours. We have a shitty football team. We all want to not have a shitty football team.

Let’s respect each other and get ready to roll.
I don't like the pick, but I won't use the Ringer

Yeah, it’s the same thing again. Then they’ll be dumping on Gettleman after he gets the axe.
I posted 2 articles on

why Daniel Jones has the lowest ceiling of all the players based off of the stats.

It's going to be a good test to see how accurate their hypothesis is in comparison.

This is a huge Gut over Data decision, as the majority of QBs have massively higher numbers in the college compared to the NFL.

We reached according to who?

Again - most respected NFL people who are actually NFL people don't seem to think that at all. It's unreal who people choose to listen to.
These guys suck...
trueblueinpw : 4/26/2019 11:15 am : link
It seems like they harsh on the Giants, because they do, but they’re equally stupid and poorly informed in all aspects of the NFL. I find the Lombardi and Tate Fraser pod also crushes on the Giants, and also kind of suspect on analysis, but somehow too, entertaining. But Mays and the other guy are unlistenable.
What did they have him ranked at prior to the draft?
steve in ky : 4/26/2019 11:32 am : link
Because trashing something they disagreed with may be nothing more than justifying their incorrect projections.

If other teams had Jones higher than most "internet experts" thought than I tend to trust the NFL scouts instead of talking heads who try and make money from projecting picks from the sidelines.

Finding Eli's eventual replacement was a priority and Jones is who they had a strong conviction about, and they got him. That part of it is a success and now we have to wait and see if it plays out like they believe it will. We are entering an exciting era of NY Giants history. As fans we might as well try and enjoy it.

Who are all these NFL people you are talking about? I've seen speculation that someone like Denver or Washington was looking at him. Do we know that's true?

Other than Brandt, who's first pick was Bronco Nagursky and Cutliffe, who's reputation rides on the players he coached, who said he's going to be good? Who was willing to stake their reputation on it?

“It’s unreal” huh? Jesus. How about you show me one website on the entire internet that lauded the #6 pick in the draft. It was universally panned by every single publication I’ve seen. SI, ESPN, FOX, CBS, NYT, NYP, I can do this all day. Yes, there were a COUPLE analysts that said that they like Jones and we can’t judge the pick for a few years (true)... doesn’t change the fact that the world view is that we reached. Hard.
It was an awful pick
since1925 : 4/26/2019 1:09 pm : link
Especially considering we could have had the best pass rusher in the draft.

We will be drafting another QB sooner rather than later.
