I think there’s a good chance Jones plays in 2019

Sean : 4/26/2019 10:48 am
Stop worrying about what Gettleman says, pay attention to his actions. When a QB is drafted at #6, there is a conviction with the player & a franchise QB expectation.

I think the most telling quote last night was from Shurmur when he mentioned that it’s Eli’s job to win & keep Jones off the field. This is not a mid round developmental QB pick, he’s the next guy.

I see this playing out similar to 2004 with Warner/Eli or like Flacco/Jackson last year. The expectation is to win & Eli will need to play very well to keep his job. When DG referenced Green Bay last night, I took it as if the Giants win & make the playoffs, there is a good chance Eli is back, but is that really a likely scenario?

If this team is floundering at 3-5 or even 4-4, Jones is the starter in my opinion. I also think this will light a major fire under Eli & that is good.
Eli could beat out Jones playing from a La-Z-Boy

Unless he gets hurt, you're not seeing Jones this year.
I want as much playing time possible for him
The_Boss : 4/26/2019 10:49 am : link
By the end of 2020. If he sucks, maybe we enter the Trevor Lawrence sweepstakes.
agreed

once the team stops pretending to be a contender, Jones will take over and gain experience like Eli did in his first season.
It’s that supposed to make me feel better

agree - once the Giants are eliminated from the playoffs

I bet we see Jones. Unlike Lauletta, obviously the Giants see a future with Jones
I think Eli will start till mathematically eliminated
ron mexico : 4/26/2019 10:53 am : link
which even in 2017 didn't come till week 13

I think Eli will play 15 games at a minimum
I think the only way we see Jones this year is the following:
Jay on the Island : 4/26/2019 10:55 am : link
1. Eli gets hurt.
2. The Giants are blowing out a team or being blown out and Jones comes in for garbage time.
3. The Giants are out of the playoff hunt and Eli isn't playing well.
4. The defense and running game are playing well but Eli is showing his age and holding the team back.

Better O line, Saquon in second year = a decent year. Unless Eli gets hurt I don’t see Jones until next year
I hope he wins the starting job

Get the teething issues out of the way now instead of delaying it for a year.
Given the state of our defense
mikeinbloomfield : 4/26/2019 10:58 am : link
without any real pass rushers, I expect Jones to play in a blowout or two.
Hope not

I think there's a chance Eli is our starter in 2021. Maybe we pull an Arizona and draft another QB next year. That would be awesome....
It depends on how he looks in practice
Vanzetti : 4/26/2019 11:01 am : link
They are not going to play him, just to play him.

Thanks for your thoughts.

DG to my eye wants to become tough team again.

Pat is on the clock now..............the expectation is to win now with a eye to a future winning QB

I think it is guaranteed Jones plays in 2019. this only makes sense as a succession plan. The sooner the better.
The older Eli gets and plays.

Play Eli until eliminated

They pretty much said that there wont be a competition for the spot. The job is Elis to start the year

You mean like the past two years?

On Nov 1st 2017

1-6

On Nov 1st 2018

1-7

On Nov 1st 2019? If there's less than 3 wins Jones will be playing in the final 8 games if he hasn't already started playing.

Sheesh Greg, are we going to hear the same negative shit all year long, year after year?

If the team doesn't fill more holes in the draft, that elimination could come early.
This is so wrong
oldutican : 4/26/2019 11:26 am : link
I believe one reason for taking Jones and not Haskins or trading for Rosen is the lack of any expectation he would challenge Eli this season or in 2020. The master plan is to put off the end for Eli and preparing a hoped-for clone to step in as the wholesome face of the franchise.

If Eli plays bad with the team around him what makes anyone think
SterlingArcher : 4/26/2019 11:30 am : link
Jones, a rookie, will do better with the same team around him?

I disagree with that 100%. Despite how much I can't stand the Daniel Jones pick he was selected in the top 10 and he must be given every opportunity to win the job out of training camp

No. If Daniel Jones outplays Eli in training camp and earns the starting role in Week 1, play him the moment he earns the position

You’re FOS. Even the really positive stuff you GRUDGINGLY concede. I have yet to see an out and out, “that was great.” At best, it’s almost always preceded by a negative disclaimer. Even I, an extremely positive and at times Kool-Aid poster have opined a bunch of negative stuff through the years..And you’re not the only usual suspect in this. It just gets really old. Why doI still read your posts, then? Because years ago, even before TC, you had a reasonable blend of positive and negative. You were a terrific and respected poster (to me) who I did not have to necessarily agree with. Oh well, you’ll say what you feel you must say.
The NYG QB landscape now looks like this
Pep22 : 4/26/2019 11:50 am : link
NYG will roll out the Manning corpse yet again this year. The we get near the 4-8 point 12 games in, we usher in the Jones era. Then we will see 3 years of mediocrity (Andy Dalton, Ryan Tannehill; something along those lines). At some point DG and PS will be fired and we will have wasted Saquon's best years in a different but equally painful way we wasted the other generational talent we had in OBJ.

What a gut punch last night was. Imagine if 6 was Josh Allen, 17 was Lock (a QB with talent) or if no QB Ford, Dillard etc. and we sat tight at 37 for Rock Ya-Sin.
Jones almost certainly will play next season
Giants38 : 4/26/2019 11:59 am : link
These comments are always made. The Browns traded a third rounder to get Tyrod Taylor and planned to sit Mayfield. By game 3 he was in. The Jets had McCown and Bridgewater and planned to sit Darnold. He started from Day 1. AZ got Bradford to start over Rosen. Rosen quickly took over. Even Lamar Jackson took that job. Wentz was third on his depth chart and started every game his rookie year.

Point is, just because a team says a QB will sit doesn’t mean it will actually happen. True, the starters in the above scenarios were not named Eli, but the analysis should ring true nonetheless.
Grudgingly?
Greg from LI : 4/26/2019 12:05 pm : link
I said I liked both of the defensive picks, think they will both be major contributors, and that trading up to pick up Baker in particular was an excellent move. If not for a highly questionable reach at #6, it would have been a terrific first round.

But, when you're talking about the biggest impact pick of the three being the most suspect of the three, yes, it tends to take a lot of the wind out of the sails.
Eli is a different animal though
gtt350 : 4/26/2019 12:07 pm : link
especially here
Well he better. He's the number 6 pick!
mikeinbloomfield : 4/26/2019 12:31 pm : link
Teams that have their QB on cheap, rookie deals have a significant advantage over the rest of the league because they can spend resources elsewhere that would normally be spent on a good veteran QB. We saw it with Seattle, with Philly, with Dallas, with KC, the list goes on and on.

Which is why it's hilarious if Gettleman really believes Jones should sit for more than one year. He is throwing away a significant financial advantage the NFL gives bad teams.

If Eli starts in 2020, then Gettleman is too far behind the times to be the GM of one of the premier franchises in the NFL.
