Anyway, I'm sure that most people have seen the video taken at MetLife last night when they announced the Giants pick and Daniel Jones and you heard someone yell out "ooohhh noooo!" Well, that was the disembodied voice of yours truly. And as we reach the next morning, I wanted to provide some context since I'm actually pretty bummed about it. At the end of the day, we are Giants fans and it's better for all of us for Daniel Jones to take the mantle from Eli and help lead this team.
The backstory here is that I've gone to the draft party the last few years. Last year was great, awesome weather, and we were on the field for it, where they mixed Jets and Giants fans. The Giants fans were happy with Saquon, and the Jets with Darnold. This time, and the few times before, there was the motor cross set up at MetLife, so they separated the Giants and Jets fans on different sides of the stadium. The Jets side had no line to go through (I think they were let in a little earlier), but the Giants side had a big line. I actually sent a quick tweet to BBI about it and kind of took a good natured shot at the Jets fans (that was for the Thanks Giants stuff).
Going into the Stadium, you were led around the outside of the stadium and towards escalators that brought you into the club. Inside the club, there is food, some events going on, little shops, etc. It was a little crowded, so I chose to go outside, but sit on the row of seats in the mezzanine that was under a bit of cover because it was drizzling/raining. The draft goes on we all saw how the picks were going. I was sitting with a group of friends and we were talking about how it was trending and I wanted defense at 6 and I had said coming up to Tampa's pick that I wanted White or Allen, whichever one gets passed. Once White was picked, I shouted over to my friend, "this has to be Allen, the Giants are going to go defense, if it's Daniel Jones, I'm going to walk out of this place."
I recorded it because some other friends of mine who were supposed to come with me, but couldn't, so I wanted to get it for posterity and send them the video afterwards. And well...you all saw the rest. I managed to not curse, mainly because I saw that group of young kids sit in front of me just before the pick. The place was stunned, and people just cleared out of the club level side. I didn't actually walk out and stayed for the Lawrence pick, but mainly out of disbelief.
So my friends who weren't there were asking me what happened and how crazy it must have been. I sent them the video. And then picking up from my earlier tweet making fun of the Jets line, I sent a quick video update to BBI and to the Giants Insider. Eric or Gidie or whoever is manning twitter retweeted it. And then all hell broke loose.
Mike Garafolo picked up on it. And then Darren Rovell. And Barstool. And Yahoo. And CBS. And ESPN. You get the drift. The video is now at 800k strong and my phone was buzzing with updates all night and even now every few seconds I get updates.
Now, being a long time Giants fan, and historian with my old game reviews, my immediate thought as this was all happening was that for better or worse, this video, and my reaction, is going to be linked to Daniel Jones. You can't talk about Phil Simms career without the video of Pete Rozelle saying his name, followed by incredulous shouts and boos as Rozelle kind of smirked. In hindsight, that video is a reminder of what Simms overcame to become a champion and get his number retired.
In the end, I hope Dan Jones becomes the next great Giants QB and leads the Giants back to the playoffs and another Super Bowl. I hope that a few years from now, they do a retrospective, and you hear my stupid "ooohhh noooo" and Jones and the Giants were vindicated.
In my own defense, I said on BBI that I wasn't high on Jones. My preference was to trade for Rosen, or take a QB later in the first/2nd round, or just wait until 2020. I was convinced Allen was the no brainer pick. I wanted a defensive player. I know we joked about Jones at 6, but I don't think anyone really thought so. I thought they would get a defender at 6, and then trade up from 17 to grab a QB (with Jones being the likely pick).
But now this video is everywhere, and I know the Giants organization reads this, and I'm hoping that it gets back to Daniel Jones, that while we are all frustrated and shocked, when it's his time to play, we are all going to root for him. It does none of us any good to be a bust. And maybe it'll be a good laugh in the future.
So there you have it, my 15 minutes of internet/twitter fame. That and $2.75 will buy me a one way metropass.
Yeah...I didn’t like the pick.
here you go...
Apparently the kid in front of me had his uncle respond to the entire twitter string.

LOL, Eric, I was just thinking of that for you and the Giants Insider guys. You must be getting hammered. Hey, free publicity!!!
You probably have noticed, but you have people in Brazil retweeting you.
"OH NOOOOOOO!"

LOL, that's cool. And yes, I've had lots of foreign languages. I had a news agency in Japan ask me if it was ok to use the footage. I said sure, it's already out there. Once the genie is out of the bottle, it is what it is.
It was meant to be.
You are locked into it now as you're video will long be remembered if either Jones busts or goes on to greatness.
The whole stadium should scream "ohhh nooooo"

lol, this is true. As I get upcoming Giants video yearbooks and they go back to Daniel Jones' starting his career, I'll be in it! :)

Greg, funny you mention that. That oh no! from the 1987 draft is one of my favorite parts. The moment Rozelle says "fullback.." He shouts. So, I'm with esteemed company.
The stuff like "I think he sucks but I hope he proves me wrong" is such utter bullshit and an easy way of emotionally hedging.
You ask a great deal of New Jersey on a Thursday Night in the rain . ;)

Bullshit - it's just the position you're put in when your team drafts a guy that you're convinced won't be very good. Nobody here *wants* Jones to bust, but plenty are afraid he will.
