Kim Jones on WFAN

sb from NYT Forum : 4/26/2019 11:38 am
Says Shurmur told her that he told Eli "It's your job to keep this guy off the field."

She asked if he was challenging Eli. He told her that he wouldn't characterize it that way and backtracked.

Jones then questions taking a 2 down DT at 17.

Weird that Benningo is getting really hot with Kim, yelling at her.

Kim also points out that Lawrence only had 4 sacks in 2+ years and points out that Gettleman blamed that on a foot injury. Kim questions why take a 340 pound guy with the same foot injury that ended Hakeem Nicks's career.
Kim likes the move to get the CB
sb from NYT Forum : 4/26/2019 11:39 am : link
Like Baker, she interviewed him and he's very confident, which you like at CB.

GothamGiants : 4/26/2019 11:40 am : link
Lawrence is not a "two down DT". People must do a quick good search, see his size, and assume run-stuffing fat ass.

This guy is going to be a monster - and a big reason why they can pull off an upset in dallas week 1.
Kim Jones is doing her best to create more controversy.
GiantGolfer : 4/26/2019 11:40 am : link
She’s still highly scorned about Beckham getting traded. She has it out for the Giants this year.
Perhaps someone can tell Kim
Big Blue '56 : 4/26/2019 11:40 am : link
that the major career-ender for Nicks was not the foot. What does it take to do just a little homework, especially with all of today’s available sources?
Kim says Giants clearly love Daniel Jones
sb from NYT Forum : 4/26/2019 11:41 am : link
...but is surprised they took a player that profiles as Snacks, and not an explosive playmaker. Because they don't have that guy on their roster.

Nicks career

Was finished because of compartment syndrome I thought. Nicks' injuries weren't anything out of the ordinary.
Jones needs to check her stats
Biteymax22 : 4/26/2019 11:41 am : link
Lawrence had more career sacks in college than Rashaan Gary...

10 vs 9.5
This draft could be a total disaster if Lawrence doesn’t excel
The_Boss : 4/26/2019 11:41 am : link
Now I’m concerned based on that foot injury nugget.

Hes 340, and he came off the field for pass rushing specialists. It's not exactly a hard assumption to make.
she is really upset with the draft
ryanmkeane : 4/26/2019 11:42 am : link
and going a little overboard with he injury stuff to Lawrence. She of course forgets to mention that in Lawrence's most recent season he played 13 games and started every single game aside from the playoffs where he was suspended. He missed 2 games in his college career. In his last game at Clemson, he had a sack and 2.5 TFL. He really is not injured right now. 2017 is where he had the foot issue.

Her attachment to Beckham has been bizarre, quite honestly.

It's totally out of character for her.
huh? Why is a comparison to Snacks a negative?
Greg from LI : 4/26/2019 11:43 am : link
Snacks was an All-Pro caliber DT. He's older and has some injury issues now, but a young version of Snacks sounds damned good to me.

It's possible
crick n NC : 4/26/2019 11:44 am : link
She is just really upset with the way the giants have done business lately which could lead her to be more harsh than normal.
I listened to the exchange...
Strip-Sack : 4/26/2019 11:44 am : link
in the Gettleman presser....Getts said the foot injury has checked out and it's fine. He also said maybe the foot injury was a factor in him not getting the sacks when she pointed that out....nothing to see here.
her take is pretty strange
ryanmkeane : 4/26/2019 11:44 am : link
one could certainly argue Lawrence was a steal at 17 and the best guy available...he's arguably more talented than his teammate who went 13th. Almost everyone loves this pick for the Giants, including the fans
I watched Dabo Sweeney last night

This we agree on. If Lawrence comparison is Snacks...isn't that a great thing? He's also much more athletic and a better prospect than Snacks. Seems to have the same motor as well.
Going to love Lawrence,
darren in pdx : 4/26/2019 11:45 am : link
but the defense needs players at all levels, and they needed someone that can stop the run and take up bodies to free up pass rushers. That’s not easy to find. There’s more draft left to get some pass rushers.
Kim on the KC model - It's unfair to Jones
sb from NYT Forum : 4/26/2019 11:45 am : link
...because he is not close to the same talent as Mahomes. And the so-called KC model worked because Mahomes is so good.

She says, why not just say it's the Giants model, because that's how they did it with Eli.

Basically, she doesn't like say KC because it puts too much pressure on Jones because it compares him to Mahomes.
Lawrence
Sammo85 : 4/26/2019 11:46 am : link
is not some one dimensional run stuffing blob. He’s not as explosive and twitchy at DT as Q. Williams but for a man his size, he’s got ability to get to QB also.

He’s more than a two down DT. He’ll still be used in a lot of the pass rush sub packages to help disrupt and get blitzing lanes opened up.

It’s clear to me that, some people didn’t really watch Clemson’s defense closely enough and just stick to generalizations on Lawrence and the fact he’s a big DT.

She’s right. Mahomes has more talent in his little toes than Jones does in his entirety.

I don't think Lawrence is going to be a big pass rush threat
Greg from LI : 4/26/2019 11:50 am : link
up the middle or anything, but I do think he's going to collapse the pocket just fine and not allow QBs to step into throws easily, so he will help the pass rush even if he won't be the one usually getting to the QB.

Now she points out that drafting a QB in first round
sb from NYT Forum : 4/26/2019 11:51 am : link

Says Eli is a professional of course and will handle it well.
But yeah

Not to mention that a foot or leg injury has different repercussions for a WR than a DL. I like Kim, but this was an odd take.

He is going to collapse the pocket which will prevent QB's from stepping up to avoid the outside rush. He will be like Snacks but with leadership qualities and a good attitude.

i would've been fine with lawrence at 6 ... glad hes a giant
I'm not a fan who gets crazy about the National reaction
aimrocky : 4/26/2019 12:35 pm : link
but this one is really ticking me off. Pre-draft, the Giants were essentially called fools if they didn't take a QB at 6. They take a QB, and the Media fly off the handle because they passed on their perceived #1 ranked QB.

Kim's interview was nearly cringe worthy, and I love Kim's insight. She, better than any other National reporter, should know that this team has holes across the board. Forget her analysis of the Jones pick, her bashing of the Dexter Lawrence pick was way off base. She can't see the need for a big run stuffer on this team? I'm glad Beningo took her to task.
Lawrence isn’t a 2 down player
giantsFC : 4/26/2019 12:36 pm : link
I have been a Clemson fan for 35 years. He is extremely athletic for a big man. He can play every down. Especially as a nose tackle

I still think it’s a reach for that position, It it goes w the rest of the absolutely bizarre and potentially disastrous draft
I’m happy if a guy plays 2 downs of a 3 and out.
Ivan15 : 4/26/2019 12:43 pm : link
He gets his rest on 3rd down. Ideally, the team needs to rotate linemen anyway.
