A bit of ink on Connelly

Jay in Toronto : 5/9/2019 10:02 pm
Not much so far, so this bit of profile from a UW site is welcome.

As I have said elsewhere, if Connelly works on his tackling he could be a starter. He is smart and instinctive and has excellent experience as an ILB in the 3-4.

So who does he beat

out? Goodson? I doubt it. Goodson can tackle already.
Can Goodson stay

He's going to

Surprise a lot of people. I think he's starting by mid season. Some folks said he was less athletic than Goodson but that's 100% wrong, his short area burst is way better as are his instincts.
Goodson

Is below average and seldomly healthy

Seems like the things being said about Connelly today, are very similar to what BBIers were saying about Goodson right after he was drafted.

On the field? Let's get him off the fucking team. Zero range. Not very instinctive. If Connelly pushes Goodson out then I will forgive DG for taking Connelly over Vosean Joseph..
Goodson

has turned into a big nothing.

Everybody's a borderline hall of famer around here until they actually play.

-With Alec Ogletree out, BJ Goodson was the main man in the middle. And I’ll tell you what, Goodson was as impressive and consistent as any LB on this team over the final 4 weeks. His playing time and injury status has been back and forth over his three years in blue, but I still want this guy on the field as much as possible. His run defense is borderline elite with his ability to reach the sidelines, deal with traffic, and deliver violent blows to ball carriers. His weaknesses in coverage are apparent, but he is a guy who plays with the hustle and intensity I want.
I feel like the evaluations on Goodson don't go any more in depth

than "he doesn't do anything I can see on highlights so I can't say he's good".

Of course Connelly will compete with Goodson
KeoweeFan : 5/10/2019 9:48 am : link
for that spot. May the best player win.

But I see no reason to suggest Goodson is the dark horse.
It is possible that he is still improving:
- Playing behind Ben Bowleare at Clemson he only started for one year
- Injury slowed his development and effectiveness on the Giants (not everyone with several injuries is "injury prone"; sometimes playing through one injury causes a second.)
- Faster LBs on either side of him may help with his lack of range
- He is a proven run stopper, and playing with Lawrence in front of him (again) can only improve that strength.
I haven't given up on Goodson
Jay on the Island : 5/10/2019 10:28 am : link
He has flashed frequently in the past and the added competition could push him to take the next step. The issue with him has mainly been about health. If he misses time due to injury Connelly might steal his job. If they both play well then the Giants could replace Ogletree after this upcoming season.

Dude Goodson sucks... you dont need to watch coaches film to see that much... if you want to spin it any other way then you are a true homer... a below average athlete... terrible in coverage... cant blitz... doesnt shed blocks very well... he can thump a little bit but that's really about it.. give it up already, hopefully we finally give up on Goodson.

A lot of how well Connelly does in the pros will come down to how well he can shed blocks. He shoots gaps really well from what I've seen and is very instinctive/decisive. He doesn't have elite athleticism, but I can definitely see him being a productive football player. He's an interesting pick. I think he might surprise some people.
Goodson is mediocre
GothamGiants : 5/10/2019 2:31 pm : link
and Connelly is more athletic than CJ Mosley

He’s going to be starting at some point this year. 4.6 speed with elite short area burst and the instincts to “shoot the gap” as well as any LB in the draft

I think he’s going to be a very underrated asset as a pass rusher in this scheme, on top of being an effective 2 down run stuffer.

I don’t want him in coverage much, but I do think he can be a force playing “downhill” against the run and blitz packages

My favorite pick after Dexter Lawrence

Thanks for posting that, Bill. Sy’56 loved Goodson in the 2016 Draft, so there might be a tiny bit of confirmation bias. But Sy knows what he’s looking at. Besides, the assertion that our unheralded 5th round pick will quickly displace a decent fourth-year pro (and former heralded 4th round pick) seems a bit optimistic. Aside from a fully developed NFL body, Goodson has a year in the system, which their position coach says is a big deal.

There’s no rush with Connelly. If he carves out a role on defense by the bye week, it’s a win. If he’s forced into the field by injuries, we’ll have to hope for the best.

I think he will make his mark on ST in year 1
