with a nice goal for the Fins in their opening game vs Canada (on now)
I was leaning more towards Hughes for the #1 pick

Want to see Fox, Kreider, Skjei and Hughes for the boys in blue.

Kakko for Finland.

Chytil for Czech.

Not that interested in seeing Lundqvist or Georgiev, so I'll just watch them when I can. And also, Moritz Seider for Germany. Could be in the running for our second first rounder.
Thanks Pjcas

I'm with you Jay although I've been Hughes all the way. Listen Kakko will be an excellent player in the league. Hughes can be a generational type talent that makes the players on his team better. When that's there in front of you you always take the shot.
Any chance Devils take Kako #1

I don't think he's a generational talent. He's not the same caliber of prospect as Sindy, Ovechkin and McDavid. He's the next tier below in the Matthews, Taylor Hall category

Hughes is still 17 years old
pjcas18 : 5/10/2019 11:26 am : link
I agree he's not McDavid. Few are.

But if Hughes hits his high for projection and becomes a Patrick Kane. I don't care you use generational talent label or not, that's a good f-ing player.

If he hits his floor of Clayton Keller, he's "just" a good player.

Hughes is a better skater than Matthews, but he's not 6' 3" with a sick shot like Matthews, but he does skate similar to McDavid.

Will be fun to watch Hughes and Kakko acclimate to the NHL, Kakko size will help him a lot more. But what is his peak?

Three kids: One in Vancouver, the second at the total opposite end of the country in New York or New Jersey, and there's a third who I don't know what the deal is.

All 19 and younger. I guess it's akin to college, but I would think that being in a professional league with grown men requires more emotional support that really only the parents can offer.

Some say Luke is the best of the three, but I have no clue if that's hyperbole. He plays D like Quinn and is supposed to be a better skater.

He's not eligible until the 2021 draft and has committed to Michigan, like Quinn. But who knows if he goes or not.

If Luke doesn't play up at U18 at all as a U17, He's not in his brothers class IMO (yet) just based on level.

Sounds like the first pick in 2020 will be that LeFrenniere kid and the first in 2021 will be another Hughes.

to say for 2021 I think.

but if things hold as they are now you can pencil in Canadian star Shane Wright for the top of the 2022 draft. He's being compared with Crosby at 15 years old.

Already a 6' center.

is the next great American superstar and there is no way the Devils will pass on the next face of the NHL.

Hughes is centering Kane today, Kreider is on the wing for Eichel and Fox is paired with Quinn Hughes.

Chytil is centering the 2nd Czech line against Sweden with Hank in net for the Swedes.

USA @ host Slovenia and Czech vs. Sweden starts in about 15 minutes.

And I think lots of guys would have gone down.
The Rangers are going to get a great player at #2
Torrag : 5/10/2019 5:37 pm : link
Both Hughes and Kakko have 'IT'. They do it in completely different ways but I'm actually happy to have the #2 selection. I think they're overall talent level is very even, both just a sliver below franchise stars like Crosby and McDavid. Let the Devils have all the pressure of making the decision. In terms of roster construction it really doesn't matter we can use both positions as we move forward with the rebuild.
thanks, Stu
ColHowPepper : 5/11/2019 9:44 am : link
finally navigated my way to NHL Network, doh, probably only selected coverage there (US games)

Hughes is dynamic, little doubt in my mind he'll go to Devs
thought Skjei played well in stretches, not well in others
Price, screened a lot, but not at his best, imo, pj would have more
informed view
KK is very tough to separate from the puck: somehow able to finish even though PS (I believe it would have been) had been called
I'm ok with big Slovakia win, good for the host country, and time for
NA teams to recover
All I wanted was for the Devils to win a top 2 spot
Jay on the Island : 5/11/2019 10:13 am : link
I would have been thrilled with either Hughes or Kakko. Now that the Devils have their choice of both it will be a very hard decision after watching Kakko last night. If Kakko keeps this up he might close the gap between the two.

I still think NJ goes for Hughes because of his speed and the fact that he plays center. Hughes is just a perfect fit for their system and I think he will become a star player once he adds to his frame.

Price? Schneider, do you mean? If so I agree with you, I don't think Schneider hurt the team per se, but he wasn't a difference maker either.

And I thought Skjei was pretty bad, if either Jones or Werenski were available Skjei would be among my first D cuts.

But they only have 6 total D and definitely the weak spot on the team IMO and two of the D are the youngsters Fox and Hughes.

Coughed the puck up all day and struggled to exit the zone. Hard to take advantage of the speed of Gaudreau, Kane, Hughes, Kreider, Larkin, etc. when you can't get the puck out.

the US best D are probably Carlson, McAvoy, Byfuglien, Jones, Werenski, McDonagh, Krug, Grezlyk, Faulk, Fowler even Niskanen.

None of them are here, some are still playing in the NHL playoffs. Suter probably the best of the bunch in Slovakia for this tourney.

I really like this German kid Seider

ColHowPepper : 5/11/2019 1:43 pm : link
Yes, Schneider, of course. Your assessment of Skjei would match up with his play in '18-'19 season ): At least, I think he was in the box for Slovakia's 2nd goal during the 5 on 3, I think, foolish penalty, both
well, KK
ColHowPepper : 5/11/2019 4:10 pm : link
a laser from the left point even strength puts Fins up, first time I've seen that part of his game. Most of the clips of him are his indomitability keeping the puck, as in his breakaway goal yesterday. Later, between the low slot and the circle, he threads the needle on a perfect pass through traffic to a wide open teammate in the low slot back side who fans on it.

On the PP (second unit, I think) he plays low and behind the net and is very calm, a boy among men.

Slovakia's 2nd goald to even it at 2-2 was challenged twice, initially on VAR (hand deflection?) and then coach's challenge (goalie interference). Agreed with Ferraro's (think he) commentary all along that there was nothing there
Kakko's
PaulN : 5/11/2019 4:57 pm : link
Performance is not going to make the draft interesting, he is going to make it a bore, because if the Devils pass on him they would need their heads examined. There is no way he is not the top pick. This kid is flat out special in every way. I never thought he would pass Hughes, he not only passed him,, he flew past him. That is the top pick without any doubt. He is the best player in the tournament, which is filled with very good NHL players.
Kakko
SJGiant : 5/11/2019 4:59 pm : link
Needs to tone it down so he slips to the Rangers.
He has phenomenal hands
Phil in LA : 5/11/2019 5:24 pm : link
Hughes needs to kick it back into high gear.
His second
ColHowPepper : 5/11/2019 6:46 pm : link
was even more impressive than the first, left the defenseman looking for his jock as he finessed it by him and then slid it between the goalie's pads.

I think a lot of people are thinking they have to re-assess their assessments......what a two days!
USA beats France
pjcas18 : 5/12/2019 10:13 am : link
7 - 1 (as they should).

Debrincat and Colin White each with two goals. Kreider scored.

Hughes played well, but was off the scoresheet.

Monday USA vs Finland (Hughes and Kakko h2h) again (10:15 am)

I'll offer an observation that
ColHowPepper : 5/12/2019 12:13 pm : link
you guys may think is off base, but seems to me that, with some exceptions during short stretches of play, these Worlds are much less physical than typical for NHL. That needs to be taken into account imo when trying to project ability/performance at that level.

not off base at all, it's why I feel like some of the other D I mentioned before would be better than Skjei (for example) who is more of a stay at home defenseman and not a puck mover.

If you watched the Worlds last year Pionk (just as a Rangers example) looked really good. The less physical game and more open space should be good for his game.

It's a different game on a bigger rink (wider).

If you were using
pjcas18 : 5/12/2019 1:06 pm : link
that (INTL style and/or rink size) to compare Hughes and Kakko it benefits Hughes more or should.

And for the record Hughes looked great in US two games.

He was arguably the US best player in their loss to the Slovak's and flashed his skill vs France.

At 17 years old.

My preference has always been toward size in a hockey player when given a choice, I just think you can basically teach/coach almost anything in hockey, but no you can't teach size.

however If that means Hughes' ceiling is Patrick Kane, I'd run to the podium.

But if Kakko ceiling is Jagr or Hull I'd run to the podium.

So, it's up to the scouts to figure it out.

I don't think either actually hit the ceilings I mentioned, but I don't think either would be a bad pick. No loss no matter which you wind up with - sort of like Taylor vs Tyler all over again IMO.

tnks, pj
ColHowPepper : 5/12/2019 2:02 pm : link
haven't watched the US games, yet, except highlights from Slovakia

What impresses me about KK, beyond his obvious high level skills, is his composure under pressure, the two most recent examples being his conducting business behind the opposition net, maintaining possession under pressure, able to create as when he completed that deke and shot through the five-hole. Before that was his threading the needle through traffic to a wide-open teammate, bang bang.

His read of play and decision-making are superb.
Both kids

USA leadind Finland
pjcas18 : 5/13/2019 10:57 am : link
2 - 1 after 1.

Skjei opened the scoring 50 seconds in, and Gaudreau followed a few min later, both assisted by Eichel.

Neither Hughes or Kakko factored on the scoreboard yet, both look good.
Fins
pjcas18 : 5/13/2019 11:43 am : link
tied it on a PP goal, stupid Colin White post whistle penalty.

Kakko more chances than Hughes.

One thing people don't realize is there are two NHL players on the Fins. Kakko is on the PP and first line. Hughes is the only player on the US team NOT in the NHL. Very different roles.
Kakko is getting huge ice time and opportunities...
Torrag : 5/13/2019 12:14 pm : link
...being one of Finland's best players. Hughes role is limited. So in terms of 'opportunities' in this tournament Kakko has a clear advantage. That said and as I've said for a while I will be ecstatic whichever guy the Rangers acquire.

Kakko has 4 or 5 goals in the tourney, but that play in 3v3 is the one that impressed me the most since it's really mano a mano at that point against a veteran NHL defenseman.

3v3 OT is the best addition to hockey since the curved blade on sticks. I love it. as a traditionalist and someone who hates a 3rd color on uniforms I expected to hate it, but it's awesome. It really highlights pure skill and get the game back to it's "pond hockey" roots.

Kakko shined today in his lone OT shift, though Larkin got the GW.
Kakko has been superb
Stu11 : 5/14/2019 8:32 am : link
I still think the Devils will and should go Hughes. If you're watching the USA games to see Hughes don't bother. He's getting 4th line minutes and hasn't gotten any PP time at all. Like PJ said he's playing on a team of NHL vets and he's just not gonna get big minutes over them. Kakko is in a much better situation to shine but as everyone has been saying his play has been more than eye-opening. In almost any other year he'd be the no doubt #1 overall.
The more these
pjcas18 : 5/14/2019 8:51 am : link

Maybe not with the euros, but from NA (and sprinkle in the non-Kakko Euros like Broberg, Soderstrom, Heinola, Podkolzin), the first round is loaded.

They only had 6 D.

they needed another one. not sure if they will only dress 6 game days or if someone sits.

he'd probably be the best candidate though none of the US d looked great.
Bowen Byram
JPinstripes : 5/14/2019 9:49 am : link
is an absolute best, a man child do it all blue liner that has to be the 3rd pick in the draft in my view.

Bowen Byram is tied for the scoring lead in the 2019 WHL Playoffs with 25 points and leads all players with 17 assists.

Game 7 of the WHL final is tonight.

Byram
pjcas18 : 5/14/2019 10:06 am : link
IMO goes top 5. Depends if the teams who pick 3 - 5 want a C (Cozens or Dach) but I think Byram has nudged Podkolzin out of the top 5 and Podkolzin's play maybe nudged himself completely out of the top 10. very lackluster U18.

He was my #1 guy for the Rangers before they got the #2 pick. I thought he would last to #6. Now probably not.
Hughes turns 18 today or yesterday

Means he loses the cage and can just wear a visor (for those wondering why he had been wearing a full cage).

Question for anyone in the know....
John In CO : 5/15/2019 1:45 pm : link
Is there a reason this tournament is played in May and not in June, when the NHL season has completed and all the best players in the world would be available to play? If it were, I could envision an actual week of a team coming together as opposed to adding guys piecemeal as their teams are eliminated from the NHL playoffs. And, of course, the tournament would actually receive attention in the USA. Im assuming Canada is already interested because, well....its hockey and its Canada. I guess im trying to recreate the World Cup of Hockey:), but really am curious why this couldn't be moved back a month.

No idea, but it's always bothered me too. And it conflicts with the Canadian juniors playoffs/memorial cup - granted if all the NHL players participate there wouldn't be much room for players in the juniors but consider the fact non-Canadians play in the juniors from some of the european countries and it probably does impact their teams.

Maybe they want it before the draft?

USA vs Canada

In a massive upset Germany beat Finland.

That currently puts the US in 4th place. Behind Germany, Canada, and Finland.

If US beats Canada in regulation they come in 1st in their division, if Canada wins in regulation they come in 1st.

If US wins in OT or SO not sure what happens b/c USA and Canada would be tied with Finland.

Unless the US plays better D, they won't hang with Canada. Hopefully Werenski suits up.

with either. Its current performance vs future performance. Hughes is the top player in this draft, and is the #1 on every scouting service board. Hockey more than anything typically always nails the #1s. Its a great time to be a Rangers fan and as much as it pains me to say a Devil fan as well. Going to be a fun few years watching these guys play against one another.
Also if you look at Pronman's latest rankings

Is it speed or is it more technique? Hughes looks fast to me, but he doesn't have BLAZING speed (like a Hagelin or a Kreider). However, he can cut the corner and wiggle through traffic with the best of 'em.

Today showed the good and bad with Hughes.

he set up 2 of the US three goals, one with a steal from Kucherov, but he was also physically manhandled - even seemed Russia had a plan to physically man handle him.

At the end of the day the two assists, and other offense was impactful, but it will be a learning experience for him,

Torrag : 5/23/2019 5:12 pm : link
One supposes this is easier accomplished v. a 17 year old boy than the man he will become in several years. Hughes is going to be a Pat LaFontaine type pro and that's scary good. He went #3 overall in '83 with Yzerman going #4. They'd go 1-2 in a redraft. LaFontaine had a 148 point season in '93 to cap one helluva ten year run before concussion issues derailed the backend of his career.

With today's rules Hughes could be even better. His ceiling is higher than Kakko's imo though the Fin will pay dividends sooner by being more physically prepared to contribute.

the coach of Russia I'm reminded of the Soviet (era) Red Army team of Tikhonov, Tretiak, Fetisov et al., something about his mug, his wide red tie, it's all of a past era.

Some rule in these quarter- and semi-finals that no penalties shall be called on teams playing Finland? Numerous open ice tripping on Fin players by Swedes and Russians, none of them called, most in plain view.

It has been a very competitive, interesting, wide open game, Finland-Russia, with the team in red dominating in spurts but unable to break through (I'm about an hour behind in my recording), so this may have changed.
this win for the Finns is tantamount to the 1980 Miracle on Ice

a no-name, offensively challenged team from Finland beating a Russian squad led by Ovechkin, Malkin, Kucherov, Orlov, Kuznetsov, etc. Anttila's game winner remarkably similar to his only other point in the tournament, thus far, beating Lundquist on a scramble/rebound from in front to send that game into OT.

a no-name, offensively challenged team from Finland beating a Russian squad led by Ovechkin, Malkin, Kucherov, Orlov, Kuznetsov, etc. Anttila's game winner remarkably similar to his only other point in the tournament, thus far, beating Lundquist on a scramble/rebound from in front to send that game into OT.

No it isn't.

Not even close.

More than half the Fins are professional hockey players.

The only draft eligible player they have is Kakko.

Everyone else is in their late 20's or 30's.

Upset, yes, no doubt about it, a huge upset, but Miracle on Ice is beyond hyperbole.

notalgia for 1980 reigns supreme!

The USA team was a younger team of unknowns, many of whom went on to NHL careers, NHL. That win came completely out of the blue, but it began to make a bit more sense once the talent of that group was better understood. The Finns may be composed largely of professionals, but not top ranked league(s), maybe a 3rd tier (guessing, not knowing)? For their keeper this is his first int'l competition. I don't think in the minds of Finnish fans that such a comp is beyond hyperbole, not that they give much of a hoot for 1980.

Separately, my impression is that in the last hectic minutes of the game, maybe the last 5, Kakko got very little ice time...more seasoned vets out there to try to preserve the win.
The soviet team in 1980

was hands down the best team on the planet. they played together for years.

They beat the US team two weeks before the olympics 12 - 2.

the Russian worlds team had the most talent and were the favorites, but had literally never practiced together and had one warm up game.

it's not in the same vicinity of an upset but yes, it's a massive upset.

Consider this, the US went to OT with Finland before winning, and the Russian team squeaked by the US. The Fins while maybe had less NHL talent, were not much less talented of a team.

I don't know how they view it in Finland, I am sure they have a lot of National pride about it, but it's not close to the upset of 18 college kids beating the best hockey team on the planet.

not nostalgia from me, simply an opinion, but I'm confident it's the right opinion.

I like the discussion though. And what is interesting is as you mention Kakko on the bench down the stretch and with the US needing a goal to get close to Russia with the net empty, Hughes was on the ice. Different situations of course, one less reliant on responsible D, but just showing a juxtaposition.

"finish" the job, beat the canucks 3 - 1 for the gold.

Kakko, at the age of 18, has won a U18, U20 and WC. I wonder if anyone else has done that, at any age.

beat the Czechs in a shootout for the bronze.
A really amazing tourny win for the Fins

They were an amazing story and worthy of much of the praise they get... BUT, any talk of that win being on the same level as the USA win in Lake Placid is pure nonsense. That's too much for me.

But that doesn't mean they weren't phenomenal. They were and it was a really fun story. Congrats to them.
pj, I was leary of coming back here

and being pistol whipped by you! (:

At the end of the day, I agree, and I did use the word 'tantamount', which should suggest almost, but not quite....These Russians were not the well oiled and schooled Russians of the Red Army team, no doubt, even if talent-wise this group might match up well to Fetisov and Tretiak.

Some further color on the lack of high profile of Gold Medal winners, as the p-b-p team kept mentioning, only two Fins (Finns?) on the roster played in the NHL this year, and neither scored a goal the entire season...not.one.goal.

Anttila, crazy tournament story, no points until the quarter finals, then four goals, game-tying or winning, each. And to repeat, Jukka Jalonen!

How do you select Vasilevsky over Lankinen for the all-tournament team?

I didn't mean to come on strong, and I love your contribution to hockey threads.

The Russian team was not that far from the top 6 teams in this tourney.

They had a great top 6 (Ovi, Malkin, Kucherov, Kuznetsov, Dadanov, even Kovalchuck who is far from great. Their D was lacking though, and their bottom two lines lacking.

Look at their results after the prelims. they were not dominant (offensively) like you'd expect.

3 - 0 vs the Czechs
3 - 1 vs Latvia
3 - 0 vs the Swiss

and they struggled in the medal round.

there is no comparison with the Soviet team in 1980 and the Russia team in the 2019 IIHF World Championships.

That said the Fins accomplishment is remarkable and their country should have a lot of pride for winning.

In my annual coaching clinic they always bring up Finland.

The Fins are ahead of most of the rest of the hockey world in "breeding" NHL players.

They, because I live in MA, will show that Finland a country with just over 5M people, has 49 current NHL players, and Massachusetts, a state with almost 7M people had 26.

Explain it? It's partly why the ADM model was invented. To emulate the Fins and it's why the US emphasized the USNDTP (which is less state focused obviously and more country focused).

good analysis
ColHowPepper : 5/27/2019 10:59 am : link
it's easy for the more casual fan (compared to you most fans must be classified as casual) to be blinded by the names at the top two lines or so, and their keepers were certainly strong. But the prelim numbers GF/GA are revealing.

Speaking of d-men, as the Canada game went on, I kept muttering to myself, in wonder more than anything else, how the hell is it that Lankinen is not getting beaten, same vs Russians, so began focusing on play in front of the net for stretches. By and large the Fin d-men were really good keeping traffic clear of the crease, not always, but mostly Lankinen had pretty good line of sight on shots from the point, of which there were many, in both games. Henrik would have been jealous, if he could see. That said, the Fins had some puck luck: how many shots off the post, three, more?
Like most of the top hockey countries (maybe all of them now)
Andy in Halifax : 5/27/2019 11:08 am : link
Finland went to more skill development model and got away from team play and structure development early. Ironically, it was the team play that was praised all tournament and what led to the win this year. But I think that's the point, focus on skills early and you still have plenty of time to implement systems, structure, etc when the players mature.

Sweden and Finland practice waaaay more than we do in Canada and there is supposedly a lot more "unstructured play". Something I think Canada would be wise to adopt for elite levels. I still think North American kids play too many games at the sacrifice of development. Just my opinion though.
Definitely true

Andy and some US programs still don't get it.

USA hockey recommends a 3 to 1 model, three on-ice practices for every 1 game. Some times they'll even recommend 3 - 2 - 1 - three on-ice, 2 off-ice (agility, cross-training, etc.), for every 1 game.

Some teams (cough cough, my daughters team two years ago) played 75 games from September to March (before playoffs). that's an average of 3 games per weekend. At most they had three on/off ice practices per week, sometimes less due to travel. that's 1:1 at best.

Last year they started getting the message.

And the focus, like you say, is not like when I was growing up through youth hockey. Skate for 10 minutes (mostly sprints, no edgework or fundamentals) and then work on breakout or fore check. Half the kids leaning on the boards or punching each other in line waiting for their turn.

ADM model is all station based, no standing around, each drill (if properly crafted) incorporated individual and game concepts. A ton of small area drills. 1 on 1 puck battles, 2 on 1 puck battles, 2 on 2, things that make kids get creative and not be robotic.

It's fun to watch the kids grow with this model and I think the US will catch up. Finland only reevaluated and adjusted their approach in 2009, so the US is not far behind.

This draft the US could have as many as 5 of the top 10, and as the ADM model (USA hockey version) permeates to the lower levels, states like MA should be better represented in the NHL.

but ultimately their hockey players will be better fundamentally.

I think you may be too hard on the US model.
Andy in Halifax : 5/27/2019 12:52 pm : link
Yes, both countries play too many games (parents insist on it) but I "borrow" a ton from the US model in my practices and I know hockey Canada has as well. You were the leader (I think) in emphasis on small area games, and that alone has been a huge boost to development models in NA.

Also, your practices growing up sounded just like mine. I wish I was growing up in this era, its a ton of fun.

Nice post.

Nice post.

Same here. My daughters first coach was Joe Hulbig - former 1st round draft pick and brief NHL career (knee injury) and he was like 6' 6". He ran a great practice especially for beginners. My daughter fell in love with the sport. I asked him one day, I said Joe when are these kids going to start hating hockey like I did (i asked it half joking)? He said I hope never. Things are different than when "we" grew up, he said. And he's right.

I hated my first coach. Mr. Tito. I was 5 years old. He just made us skate (fast on the first whistle, slow down on the second, two whistles switch direction) and screamed and yelled.

Anyway, different era and I think it's a good balance between the competitiveness and definitely not "everyone gets a trophy" - these kids work their asses off and there are no prizes for 2nd place (well sometimes 2nd place gets a trophy, but it's a 2nd place trophy and they cry when they get it). 3rd or later get nothing and I like that.

The USA hockey app is great - if you can get it, some great drills.

I like the Canada app too, but one of them i needed to pay for and didn't want to pay for another app. I think it was maybe the Canada app to watch a video of the drills.
Blackhawks scout weighs in
pjcas18 : 5/28/2019 12:22 pm : link
on the Athletic. He was a former Penguins scout when they took MAF, Malkin, and Crosby in successive drafts (#1, #2, and #1)

His comment on Cole Caufield:

Quote:
Hes the best goal-scorer in the draft. His ability to get to spots, get open and get the puck on the net is just remarkable. And the size factor is not an issue. He has a lot of similarities to Alex (DeBrincat), and he has a very, very strong lower trunk. He has no fear. Like Alex, you probably least suspect him to be involved in the scrums, but then when you go back and look it up, hes one of the leaders in scrums. Hes so competitive. He doesnt feel like he has any kind of a size disadvantage and hes proven that.

since it's behind a pay wall I won't post the rest, but wow. that kid did himself some favors this year.
