Hughes needs to kick it back into high gear.
His second
ColHowPepper : 5/11/2019 6:46 pm : link
was even more impressive than the first, left the defenseman looking for his jock as he finessed it by him and then slid it between the goalie's pads.

I think a lot of people are thinking they have to re-assess their assessments......what a two days!
USA beats France
pjcas18 : 5/12/2019 10:13 am : link
7 - 1 (as they should).

Debrincat and Colin White each with two goals. Kreider scored.

Hughes played well, but was off the scoresheet.

Monday USA vs Finland (Hughes and Kakko h2h) again (10:15 am)

I'll offer an observation that
ColHowPepper : 5/12/2019 12:13 pm : link
you guys may think is off base, but seems to me that, with some exceptions during short stretches of play, these Worlds are much less physical than typical for NHL. That needs to be taken into account imo when trying to project ability/performance at that level.

not off base at all, it's why I feel like some of the other D I mentioned before would be better than Skjei (for example) who is more of a stay at home defenseman and not a puck mover.

If you watched the Worlds last year Pionk (just as a Rangers example) looked really good. The less physical game and more open space should be good for his game.

It's a different game on a bigger rink (wider).

If you were using
pjcas18 : 5/12/2019 1:06 pm : link
that (INTL style and/or rink size) to compare Hughes and Kakko it benefits Hughes more or should.

And for the record Hughes looked great in US two games.

He was arguably the US best player in their loss to the Slovak's and flashed his skill vs France.

At 17 years old.

My preference has always been toward size in a hockey player when given a choice, I just think you can basically teach/coach almost anything in hockey, but no you can't teach size.

however If that means Hughes' ceiling is Patrick Kane, I'd run to the podium.

But if Kakko ceiling is Jagr or Hull I'd run to the podium.

So, it's up to the scouts to figure it out.

I don't think either actually hit the ceilings I mentioned, but I don't think either would be a bad pick. No loss no matter which you wind up with - sort of like Taylor vs Tyler all over again IMO.

tnks, pj
ColHowPepper : 5/12/2019 2:02 pm : link
haven't watched the US games, yet, except highlights from Slovakia

What impresses me about KK, beyond his obvious high level skills, is his composure under pressure, the two most recent examples being his conducting business behind the opposition net, maintaining possession under pressure, able to create as when he completed that deke and shot through the five-hole. Before that was his threading the needle through traffic to a wide-open teammate, bang bang.

His read of play and decision-making are superb.
Both kids
Phil in LA : 5/12/2019 2:13 pm : link
have incredible hands.
USA leadind Finland
pjcas18 : 5/13/2019 10:57 am : link
2 - 1 after 1.

Skjei opened the scoring 50 seconds in, and Gaudreau followed a few min later, both assisted by Eichel.

Neither Hughes or Kakko factored on the scoreboard yet, both look good.
Fins
pjcas18 : 5/13/2019 11:43 am : link
tied it on a PP goal, stupid Colin White post whistle penalty.

Kakko more chances than Hughes.

One thing people don't realize is there are two NHL players on the Fins. Kakko is on the PP and first line. Hughes is the only player on the US team NOT in the NHL. Very different roles.
Kakko is getting huge ice time and opportunities...
Torrag : 5/13/2019 12:14 pm : link
...being one of Finland's best players. Hughes role is limited. So in terms of 'opportunities' in this tournament Kakko has a clear advantage. That said and as I've said for a while I will be ecstatic whichever guy the Rangers acquire.
OT
pjcas18 : 5/13/2019 12:23 pm : link
for USA vs Finland
Larkin with the OT
pjcas18 : 5/13/2019 12:32 pm : link
winner. US wins.

Kakko had one shift in OT, holy shit, he flat out dominated, didn't score, but created.
I'm fine with either
Kyle in NY : 5/13/2019 12:44 pm : link
but I have to admit, at this point I'd be a tad disappointed if the Devils take Kakko and we get Hughes.
Kakko
pjcas18 : 5/13/2019 12:50 pm : link
made Ryan Suter look like a rookie in 3v3 OT. Backed him in to the net, protected the puck, used his body, and got closer to a scoring chance than he should have.

Kakko has 4 or 5 goals in the tourney, but that play in 3v3 is the one that impressed me the most since it's really mano a mano at that point against a veteran NHL defenseman.

3v3 OT is the best addition to hockey since the curved blade on sticks. I love it. as a traditionalist and someone who hates a 3rd color on uniforms I expected to hate it, but it's awesome. It really highlights pure skill and get the game back to it's "pond hockey" roots.

Kakko shined today in his lone OT shift, though Larkin got the GW.
Kakko has been superb
Stu11 : 5/14/2019 8:32 am : link
I still think the Devils will and should go Hughes. If you're watching the USA games to see Hughes don't bother. He's getting 4th line minutes and hasn't gotten any PP time at all. Like PJ said he's playing on a team of NHL vets and he's just not gonna get big minutes over them. Kakko is in a much better situation to shine but as everyone has been saying his play has been more than eye-opening. In almost any other year he'd be the no doubt #1 overall.
The more these
pjcas18 : 5/14/2019 8:51 am : link
showcase tourneys go on the more I think this draft is better than last year.

Maybe not with the euros, but from NA (and sprinkle in the non-Kakko Euros like Broberg, Soderstrom, Heinola, Podkolzin), the first round is loaded.

USA
pjcas18 : 5/14/2019 8:54 am : link
adds Werenski (for those who care about how the team does vs scouting Hughes and Kakko)

next game tomorrow 10:15 AM vs Great Britain, Hughes should get some ice time.

They only had 6 D.

they needed another one. not sure if they will only dress 6 game days or if someone sits.

he'd probably be the best candidate though none of the US d looked great.
Bowen Byram
JPinstripes : 5/14/2019 9:49 am : link
is an absolute best, a man child do it all blue liner that has to be the 3rd pick in the draft in my view.

Bowen Byram is tied for the scoring lead in the 2019 WHL Playoffs with 25 points and leads all players with 17 assists.

Game 7 of the WHL final is tonight.
Byram
JPinstripes : 5/14/2019 9:50 am : link
Best = Beast.
Byram
pjcas18 : 5/14/2019 10:06 am : link
IMO goes top 5. Depends if the teams who pick 3 - 5 want a C (Cozens or Dach) but I think Byram has nudged Podkolzin out of the top 5 and Podkolzin's play maybe nudged himself completely out of the top 10. very lackluster U18.

He was my #1 guy for the Rangers before they got the #2 pick. I thought he would last to #6. Now probably not.
Hughes turns 18 today or yesterday
pjcas18 : 5/15/2019 8:57 am : link
as USA plays Great Britain.

Means he loses the cage and can just wear a visor (for those wondering why he had been wearing a full cage).
Hughes
pjcas18 : 5/15/2019 9:19 am : link
centering 3rd line with JVR and Clayton Keller on the wings.

No Werenski in the lineup yet, I didn't realize Wolanin had been previously added as the 7th D.
US hits two posts
pjcas18 : 5/15/2019 10:46 am : link
and cross bar, but somehow tied with GBR 1 - 1 with under 2 left in the 1st.

Seeing Wolanin's name makes me think of something
Greg from LI : 5/15/2019 11:06 am : link
Is it just me, or is hockey more of a family affair than other pro leagues? There seem to be so many players whose fathers, uncles, and grandfathers played in the league than in other sports.
Boring-ish
pjcas18 : 5/15/2019 12:32 pm : link
game. US gives up 3 to GBR in what seemed like a SCF win to GBR but was a 6 - 3 loss.

USA had 65 shots on net.

Kane breaks US world championship points record in 21 games, took Mark Johnson 63 games.
GBR goalie
pjcas18 : 5/15/2019 12:33 pm : link
looks like Stifler from American Pie (he got GBR player of the game and took his helmet off)
Question for anyone in the know....
John In CO : 5/15/2019 1:45 pm : link
Is there a reason this tournament is played in May and not in June, when the NHL season has completed and all the best players in the world would be available to play? If it were, I could envision an actual week of a team coming together as opposed to adding guys piecemeal as their teams are eliminated from the NHL playoffs. And, of course, the tournament would actually receive attention in the USA. Im assuming Canada is already interested because, well....its hockey and its Canada. I guess im trying to recreate the World Cup of Hockey:), but really am curious why this couldn't be moved back a month.

No idea, but it's always bothered me too. And it conflicts with the Canadian juniors playoffs/memorial cup - granted if all the NHL players participate there wouldn't be much room for players in the juniors but consider the fact non-Canadians play in the juniors from some of the european countries and it probably does impact their teams.

Maybe they want it before the draft?
Or that late in the calendar
Jay in Toronto : 5/15/2019 5:07 pm : link
Guys need / want a break before grind starts again.

NHL has the longest season of a very demanding sport.
Has to be at the time it is
Davisian : 5/15/2019 6:18 pm : link
No way guys are going to get a month or more off then come back to play an international tourney and have it be any good.

They need an offseason.
US plays Saturday and Sunday
pjcas18 : 5/17/2019 10:38 am : link
against Denmark and Germany (local time 6:15 and 10:15 respectively).

US should win both, of note against Germany is Anakim favorite Moritz Seider, massive German defenseman, top 10 Euro (#6) and first round pick. plus they have Draisatl. so should be fun game.

US finishes prelim play vs Canada on Tuesday.

Luke Kunin added, - doesn't move the needle for me.
USA Germany
pjcas18 : 5/19/2019 10:22 am : link
puck drop now....Germany ahead of US in the standings.

Need a W heading into their last prelim vs Canada.
Drasaitl

1 - 0 Germany
JVR

tips in a Clayton Keller shot, to tie it up.
Off
pjcas18 : 5/19/2019 10:39 am : link
a face off win. Face offs are so important.
German
pjcas18 : 5/19/2019 11:11 am : link
goalie makes some highlight reel saves on Eichel and Kane. Still tied at 1.
Still tied at 1
pjcas18 : 5/19/2019 11:35 am : link
after 1. US not a contender in this tournament.

The Canadians beat the Germans 8 - 1.

I don't see the US advancing too far, if at all, in the medal round.
Eichel
pjcas18 : 5/19/2019 12:15 pm : link
on the PP after a too many men on GER follows a Dylan Larkin goal, US pulling away 3 - 1
Germany pulls
pjcas18 : 5/19/2019 12:19 pm : link
goalie, US gets a penalty, 2 and change left Germans on the PP

US caught a break on another penalty.

6 on 4 most of the rest of the way, or until GER scores
too much
pjcas18 : 5/19/2019 12:20 pm : link
time, no urgency from the Germans, 40 seconds left, still a 2-goal lead
Game over
pjcas18 : 5/19/2019 12:21 pm : link
US clinches a spot in the QF, now jockeying for position, I think Tuesday vs Canada will be a good measuring stick
USA vs Canada
pjcas18 : 5/21/2019 8:34 am : link

In a massive upset Germany beat Finland.

That currently puts the US in 4th place. Behind Germany, Canada, and Finland.

If US beats Canada in regulation they come in 1st in their division, if Canada wins in regulation they come in 1st.

If US wins in OT or SO not sure what happens b/c USA and Canada would be tied with Finland.

Unless the US plays better D, they won't hang with Canada. Hopefully Werenski suits up.
