NFT: Mosquito repellent for the yard

GMAN4LIFE : 5/10/2019 10:51 am
any advice on good mosquito repellent for my yard. There isn't any standing still water in my yard. No ponds or anything. Next door they have a pool but other than that, thats it.

I have a sprinkler system that comes on and off in the morning and night but again, the grass soaks it up.

any advice would be appreciated.
I've used this with mixed results

You have to apply very frequently (weekly) less than ideal but serviceable.

I've used this with decent results. My problem with it is that my neighborhood is pretty crammed together so if no one else does anything like this (or any kind of mosquito deterrents), its not as effective. If you have a big yard and are not that close to other neighbors it may work better.

I used everything. Then a few years ago, my local mosquito control district hired a seasonal employee to treat areas that request service. Most residents don't even realize that it is a service that they can request. When a service request is filed, they will come out and inspect/advise on mosquito habitat prevention and then will follow up with a fogging. But the fogging is only limited to the front yard/street as the fogging machine is vehicle mounted. They will rev it up and create a dense cloud that is very effective, but likely never reaches the backyard. I had used my own handheld fogger for my backyard area.

Anyway, back to the seasonal employee, he was a retiree and an old timer veteran. We struck up a friendship as I'm a veteran and he has been treating my property on a regular basis that extends beyond the standard treatment described above. One of the "secret" treatments is to apply a mosquito barrier on the vegetation. The product that they use is called Tapstar and they mix it into a sprayer. I haven't used my handheld fogger in 2 years.

Now, no treatment will 100% eliminate every mosquito. But between the mosquito barrier (Tapstar) and their fogging treatment, my property isn't swarming with mosquitoes. Best thing is that I don't pay a cent other than the property taxes where their budget is derived from.
Get a Thermacell
FranknWeezer : 5/10/2019 11:55 am : link
And keep it around where you are hanging out. Or clip it to your waistband. They work very well and are reasonably priced.

Used this when I used to live in North Jersey. Kills wherever sprayed. Keep kids and pets away for a few days. It is toxic but no signs that it causes long-term health effects. This is what the Bergen County Mosquito Control Commission used to use. You can get it at most stores with an outdoor department.
If you can find one of these that are

plug-in (rather than battery operated), I have friends that swear by them. They say they put it out 3-weeks before an event and you won't see a Mosquito. They also say the first week that you will have to empty it every other day.

My understanding on the battery operated ones is that the battery life sucks

"fogs" the yard on a monthly basis and it seems to work well. Not sure of the product they use however.

WTF that thing Bubba showed us a picture of is?
Talstar
RomanWH : 5/10/2019 2:04 pm : link
Buy it off Amazon plus a pump sprayer. It's what pest control companies use. Kills anything with six legs or more. Toxic so keep kids/pets away for a couple days but the results are staggering. I'm talking no mosquitos for a solid month. Doesn't matter if your neighbors have standing water, if the bug ventures over to your sprayed area, they won't survive first contact.

To give you an idea of the strength, it's recommended solution is a spoonful per gallon of water.

You mean Beer Man?

It's a mosquito magnet. Converts propane to CO2 to attract the mosquitos and then traps them inside.

This is the stuff that the mosquito control district guy uses. I wrote Tapstar above, but it is what you wrote Talstar. Now, my guy doesn't spray the walking surface of the grass so it is safe for my pets right away. He will spray the shrubs/fence/and other vegetation (my property backs up to a conservation area) and it serves as a barrier that lasts for a few weeks until the next application.

I get absolutely eaten alive every summer and can't stay on the porch for more than 15 mins. I will try these out this year. Tried those burning coiles and oil torches and they were useless.

Yup. It's the best solution. All the other stuff like citronella candles and dryer sheets and planting lavender... I've never found them to be nearly as effective as this stuff.

When spraying, be sure to hit areas that mosquitos might cling to... Vertical surfaces up to 3 ft from the ground. That's in addition to the main areas you're trying to keep mosquito free. I don't have a huge yard or pets so I basically spray every part of my backyard plus along the side of my house.

They add $20/mo to my bill for the season. I assume it works as we do not seem to have a problem with the pests. They also treat for fleas and ticks.
