Scott Simonson - Question for videotape junkies

Bob in Newburgh : 5/14/2019 9:58 am
I believe SB, if healthy, will have a monster season,

It is crucial that we have a base offense TE who is a good blocker, rather than slightly better than average (I believe this describes RE). If you have a TE who can effectively seal the end of the line, some of SB"s wide runs are going for big yardage and points.

So good blocker - does SS qualify, have I undervalued RE?
i'm no film junkie

but i do recall SS handling khalil mack quite well
You haven't undervalued RE

He's not "slightly better than average", he's slightly below average. Plus I've caught him numerous times getting blown back into the backfield and having SB tip toe around him. More times than not, he actually gets in the way.

Haven't watched much of SS yet.

Really was Ellison that bad?
He's a fair to middling at best blocker

Plus, he's only a fair to middling receiver. Plus, he gets paid a lot of money. Do the math.
I think you're going to see
allstarjim : 5/14/2019 12:03 pm : link
a lot of two TE sets this year, so that Shurmur can maximize Engram as a pass weapon as well as get Saquon in some great spots to break long gains.

You'll see Engram lineup inline, slot, and outside, IMO, with Tate and Shepard getting the majority of the snaps in those formations, and either Ellison or Simonson also on the field mostly on the line.

Simonson is a good blocker. I don't expect him to get more snaps than Ellison, though.
Ellison has underwhelmed big time.

He’s been a guy who hasn’t been very good in any area thus far. Being a better blocker than EE isn’t saying much because that was never his game. A rounded/superior blocking TE would do wonders for this team. Hopefully a guy like Simonson can continue to grow. It seems the coaching staff is high on him at the very least.
And here we go again with the BBI narrative
allstarjim : 5/14/2019 12:15 pm : link
Ellison is a good blocker. He is a good blocking TE. He is not only above average for a TE, he is well above average.

It's crazy how this keeps coming up as if it's a valid opinion.
Scott Simonson

Is an offsides and holding penalty machine. Other than that, he is ok.
If you buy what PFF is selling...
Klaatu : 5/14/2019 12:45 pm : link
Ellison's grade was considerably higher than Simonson's.
Than Maybe

They both suck!
I posted RE's stats awhile back....
clydeman1 : 5/14/2019 2:23 pm : link
and he was consistently among the top TEs in the league in
Receptions/Targets and YPC...dont recall YAC, sorry...
He can't
wonderback : 5/14/2019 3:13 pm : link
Run a seam route and he can't set the edge or sweeps. I don't care what his other stats are, these are very restrictive qualities in a TE.

He's OK. He gets paid a lot of money. I thought he would at least be a very good blocker. He's not. Period.
I haven't looked at the 2020 crop of TE draftees, yet...
Klaatu : 5/14/2019 3:31 pm : link
But there are a ton of TE's hitting the free agent market next year. Maybe we'll buy a new one?

I think you need to watch more tape on him when Saquon is running the football. He pushes his man back, washes him out of the play, often. It's not debatable by anyone who watches actual film.

While I don’t think he’s worth his contract, he is an excellent run blocker

This TD/cut back lane may have not happened without him dominating the LB
#85 - ( New Window )
Thats an interesting play.
BlueLou'sBack : 5/14/2019 11:17 pm : link
The left side of the OL, where Ellison and EE are lined up, actually looks like it was the POA since Shepard pulled into that hole and took care of Swearinger filling it.

Could be a designed cutback, like a counter?

Shepard vs Landon Collins gonna be some thumping going on next year.

I am in your camp and even created a thread to discuss this but many here disagree
