But the focus on player DEVELOPMENT is through the roof compared to the last several seasons.

Can you tell us what exactly is different?
Kay pitching lights out is the first exciting development of the year

if Dunn were still here we'd probably consider him leapfrogged. It looks like he's getting a little bit lucky (babip against under .200, FIP double his ERA, 90% LOB) but also looks like he's made legitimate improvements - higher K rate, lower walk rate, lower line drive rate, etc. Looks like he's going to be in the conversation as a reinforcement before too long, would imagine they move him over to Syracuse around June 1 after another start or 2.

The West Virginia Power is in town to play the Charleston RiverDogs, so we went to see the Jarred Kelenic show last night. Young Jared had an eventful game. He's batting 3rd and playing CF in the Power's lineup -- Struck Out Looking in the 1st. In the 3rd, he singled, but was doubled off of first in a base-running blunder. HBP in the 5th and later scored. Weak groundout in the 7th. Jarrod is still top 10 in many offensive categories in the SAL, and is currently the Mariner's #2 prospect. He just looks like a ballplayer -- I wouldn't have traded him, and I said so the day the deal went down.

As far as Columbia Fireflies are concerned, I'll give the kids get all the time they need. Ronny is several years younger than everybody in the league, and Newton has been playing all over the infield without defensive issues. The new outfielder from Cuba, Molina, has started hitting for power. Tonight's pitcher Holderman had come back strong from injury. They get all the time they need.

Thank you for the first hand report - how has Vientos' looked in the field?

Have you seen the season Austin Riley is having in AAA? 1.095 OPS, 160 wRC+ and 15 homeruns in 37 games for the 22 year old.

I'm not sure if it's accurate but the Braves reportedly were willing to give up Soroka and Riley for Realmuto but Miami wanted MORE. The Marlins are idiots for turning down that offer if it's true. Soroka is one of the youngest players in baseball and looks like the ace of the Braves staff already, 1.21 ERA and 2.64 FIP.

Riley was just promoted to Atlanta today after the Braves moved him to LF to find a spot in the lineup.

I hadn't noticed but that's nuts. Funny thing is... people were saying Riley's stock was a bit down before the year. Good lord

The Marlins are idiots whether or not it's true. They completely butchered the Realmuto negotiations. From the Mets they probably could have had Kelenic, Dunn, ++ if they engaged aggressively from the beginning. I know Sixto looked good recently but he's a big risk.

In my opinion, Vientos is not a good 3B. The game I saw a few weeks ago, he had trouble with a slow roller (that's always a tough play, but DW used to eat those up). Vientos also olay'd a hot shot to his left that night which kept a big inning alive.

Small sample size, but his fielding could improve. At the time he wasn't hitting his weight, so his defense was magnified. Again, it's way too early for me to give up on A-ball players.

It's his pre-draft scouting reports that have some people hesitant to buy in. There were concerns about his bat speed and defense but he has quelled those concerns. He has to prove it at the major league level now. The always stubborn Keith Law is still a doubter.
