Any CFL fans here who have insights on DL Jake Ceresna?

The Giants signed Jake Ceresna to a reserve/futures contract in January 2019. The 6’6”, 295-pound Ceresna spent the past two years in the Canadian Football League (CFL) after a brief stint with the New York Jets in 2016.

If you can get past the first couple of minutes of this poorly edited video, there are some impressive highlights from him in the CFL.

former MikeN in Ottawa here.

Ceresna came into the CFL in 2017 with the Ottawa RedBlacks and appeared to be a young player with a bright future. There were various times he impressed and then, late in that year, Ottawa traded him to Edmonton and I am not sure it was ever made clear why. Last year for Edmonton, he had 32 tackles, 8 sacks and one forced fumble. In 14 games for Ottawa in 2017, he had 18 tackles and 2 sacks.

He is probably a little light to play DT in the NFL. My personal feeling is I expected more production from him. I always was left the feeling of wanting more. I think he has talent but I do not think that talent is transferable to the NFL. At best, perhaps a depth player or a PS guy.

I do not see him as a possible future starter.

here but it was a strange circumstance because after starting for a number of games all of a sudden, in 2017, he was benched and then shortly after he was traded to Edmonton. Now, I understand why Edmonton wanted him because they had a new GM who happened to be the RedBlacks for assistant GM, Brock Sunderland, so I am sure Sunderland liked him.

I just thought it was odd. My biggest criticism is he lacks consistency. Some games he looks unblockable, others he is invisible.

he surprises.

Not sure if this means anything or not

But he's from the town next to me in CT, where we don't really produce any football players, so when we have one that becomes successful they wind up all over the local papers and news.

Until he signed with the Giants and I looked up his bio, I had never heard of him, no local buzz, a lack of local articles. His high school plays against the one my wife teaches at and I go to the games, so I've more than likely watched him play and he didn't stick out.

Again, he could have just been a late bloomer, but something about the lack of local buzz/interest just comes off as weird.
My buddy is a Redblacks coach

I asked him. He said that there were issues with Ceresna that decided his fate with the team.

He would not tell me anything else. Either because he did not know or he did not want to be the source of the reason(s) coming out.
Maybe he is a bit of a knucklehead but he has good size

So it's bull rush or bust for him? He doesn't carry himself very well either, he's pretty annoying. I hope he tries that bull rush on 71 in camp, it will not be pretty.
He's probably

fighting an uphill battle to make the final 53 anyway. You have to figure they will keep 6 DLs. Hill, Lawrence, and Tomlinson are locks. Pierre and McIntosh are near locks IMO, which pretty much leaves one spot between a journeyman vet, a 7th round pick, an unheralded UDFA, a guy from England, and Ceresna from the CFL. One would think the vet or or 7th rounder, both of whom can play nose tackle, have the inside track.

This is all barring injuries, of course.
