What New York area teams do you root for?

RinR : 5/16/2019 2:27 pm
I realize that this has been done before and that some Giants fans root for teams in other cities (which I don't understand) but let's give it another shot.

Mine:
Giants
Mets
Knicks
Rangers

Over the last 2 full seasons for each, they are collectively 267-394 .403%.

It's been painful for these 4; not much to cheer about with the highlight probably being JdG winning the Cy Young. {sigh}

Giants
Mets
Knicks
Rangers bandwagon; don't follow hockey enough to claim

No surprises really reading through everyone's, but living in Philly, people are always surprised I'm a Mets/Giants fan...perception outside NY is generally that you are either Yankees/Giants or Mets/Jets..maybe because of the rhyme or the fact that Mets and Jets are both kinda jokes relative to their big Bros?? Idk..but I always have to dispell it.

Giants
Mets
Islanders
Knicks

The older I get, the harder it is to follow all four.

As a child, nothing was more important to me than the Mets.

Giants are my main interest as an adult. Still get to watch 140+ Mets game, but often, it's in the background while I'm working.

With the NHL and NBA, I'm lucky to watch 40 games, and I am very Knicks- and Isles-centric.
I only root for the Giants. I will watch the other teams if they are

Giants
Yankees
Nets
Devils

Growing up in Central NJ, my family were always big Giants and Yankees fans. But nobody else really paid much attention to the NBA or NHL. But I gravitated to the NJ teams in basketball and hockey.

While the Devils' fan base will never be the Rangers fan base, it's interesting to see the number of Devils' fans. I supposed this is an effect of the success the Devils franchise had during Martin Brodeur's tenure with the Devils. Devils had 849 wins, Rangers had 743. Devils had 5 Stanley Cup appearances, 3 Cups. Rangers had 2 Stanley Cup appearances, 1 Cup. Devils made the playoffs 16 of those 20 years. Rangers had 12 playoff appearances. You had a large number of years where kids growing up were really accustomed to seeing the Devils as the dominant team in NY.

By comparison, the Islanders made the playoffs six years in that stretch.

Not a Knicks fan at all, don’t mind seeing the Celtics/Sixers/basically anybody but Knicks/Bulls/Spurs/Lakers win in basketball.

Went to first sporting event in the original Yankee Stadium, totally blown away by the dimensions and grandeur, plus the monuments on the field. My favorite player was Roy White, but that's another story.

Wrote a book report on Roger Staubach, so I started following Dallas when Dandy Don was the QB. There are so many great players from that era it's tough to choose, but I would put Roger as my favorite.

Basketball was different, my dad loved Bill Russell, so I became a Celtics fan. My favorite player was Hondo, John Havlicek. I was saddened at the news of his passing recently and it took me back to my childhood watching him play, constant motion.

So there it is, the Yankees, the Cowboys, and the Celtics. It could be said that each is a cornerstone franchise of their league. Not bad for a child.
Same ones as you...

my Dad grew up in Brooklyn and always hated the Yankees. As a result--so do I. Let's go Mets.
Giants

Boston Celtics
San Francisco Giants. Blame my Dad for this last one. He was New York Giants fan for the Miracle at Cooghans Bluff in 51. He talked so much about in that In 62 when I began following baseball I fell in love with that team, Mays, McCovey, Cepeda, Marichal, Jack Stanford, the Alou brothers

Difficult to follow West Coast team, kind of wish I had adopted Mets or Red Sox. But I m a pretty loyal guy so I stuck with. SF Giants

Anecdotally, it's been my experience that Yankees/Giants is the more common combination. It's not 100%, obviously - I have some Mets/Giants fans in my family, and of course there are some here - but Mets/Jets seems more prevalent.

Giants, Yankees, Rangers, Red Bull and maybe some day the Knicks again. May have to Tampa Bay as so many ex-Rangers are there.

I grew up in CT and I knew one Jets fan. He was a Yankees fan. Ron Perelli. He was a roommate of mine during college.

I, obviously this is all anecdotally, know many Mets/Giants fans.

The mid-80's launched a lot of Mets/Giants fans (like myself).
Maybe it's a Long Island thing then

very large extended family in CT was all Giants fans. but in baseball it was almost even split between Yankees and Red Sox and there was no Hartford line. We all lived in New Haven county.

I was the only Mets fan in the family.

Probably. King of Queens too (can't forget Kevin James). I was a little surprised. He actually is a legit Mets fan, like Seinfeld. Kevin James knows his Mets history.

No clue how strong of a Jets fan he is or of that's supposed to be common in Queens.

Same here. It's weird. But that's how it's mostly been in my experience, too, for some reason with between the football/baseball teams and fans in this area. It's interesting, if nothing else.
Oddly

My father was a Yankees fan. But I started following baseball in '69 (I was 10) and got completely absorbed with the Miracle Mets. Ended up having some memorable debates with my Dad over the years with Yankees vs Mets.

Giants, Yankees, Knicks.

The only two sports I care about. Baseball is always my top priority through. In Sept/Oct if there is a scheduling clash I will watch the Yankees and DVR the Giants and hope for the best.
