Dave-Te Podcast...The NY Jets Front Office Mess

nflscouting : 5/16/2019 6:42 pm
Hey folks, well, so much for the peace and quiet scouting hockey here in Europe. The NY Jets mess was predicted when "Gasehole" stepped into the Jets HC job. Well, look at it this way, better them than Big Blue, right?
Here is the podcast about some other staff on the hot seat.
Also-two things;
1-Scott Pioli-anyone else getting an inkling he might jump in as Jets GM, or who do you folks think they will go after
2-Hockey fans-start watching film on Jack Hughes folks-this is my highest rated US-born player since Modano. He is just destroying goalies in the U-18 tournament & the Devils would be NUTSO to pass up on this guy in June

NFL Front Office Issues and Coaching Hot Seats
Paul Crane and scout Dave-Te' Thomas discuss some issues in several NFL front offices. From the ness with the NY Jets to the cross town Giants, Green Bay Packers and Cincinnati Bengals. They look at some coaches facing hot seats from Mike Tomlin in Pittsburgh now that Le'Veon Bell and Antonio Brown are gone, to the perpetual hot seat of Jason Garrett in Dallas. All that, a fantasy football newcomer and a super sleeper for the 2020 draft.

Did you ever do a show where you just reviewed the Giants draft? I listened to the 92.9 wrap up, but was hoping you had something that was just Giants. If not, and when you have time, any chance you care to drop any thoughts or nuggets about the NYG draft?

I get that, and wonder if any teams did send DG a Hallmark card after that draft. But on his podcast he praised Love and had Baker was his top CB from his rankings podcast. But overall he's talked about the players as individuals on his podcasts, maybe he can big picture the team looking at all the draft picks and undrafted guys as a whole.

Yankee, I believe the 2 teams that were interested in Jones was both Denver and Cincinnati.

Denver traded back after NYG selected Jones and Cincinnati had a plan to move to 9 with Buffalo if Jones fell past NYG.

I hope Dave Te can confirm this.
I wonder about Pioli

Would you need to step down before formally taking the job and making an announcement? Wouldn't he have the future job in hand before stepping down in KC? Not like he's the top guy there.

Hughes has looked sharp, but 1-2 could easily flip. Kakko is damn impressive.

I feel most bad for whomever isn't the Devils or Rangers!

Lots of reports were linking Redskins to Jones, especially as it came closer to draft day. There was a report from Russini(espn) pre draft that said Redskins were split on Jones/Haskins with Snyder/Allen preferring Haskins and the “football people”(Gruden and Skins coaches) preferring Jones. Greg Gabriel reported on twitter day of or before draft that Redskins were trying to get into top 5, and the player they were targeting was Jones, this was pre draft. There were reports from Daniel Jeremiah day of draft mentioning this as well(and also suggesting Haskins interest). They were reports on Twitter(Gabriel and others)day after Jones pro day that if teams liked him they would have to get him higher than originally thought:

This buzz all started outside of Giants land, from reputable non giant sources after the pro day at Duke and grew after his visits with teams

To be clear Dave 'Te wasn't confirming there were 2 teams interested between 6 and 17, he was saying Gettleman lied.
The point is, which doesn't get talked about enough is that is not what matters. What actually matters is that at 6, with all the other quarterbacks not named Kyler Murray on the board, and several top defensive prospects including Josh Allen, that the Giants chose Daniel Jones. They could have picked any of the quarterbacks, and maybe they could have tried to play around and wait till 17, or trade up from 17 but they felt taking Jones at 6 was important enough because they valued him that much over the other quarterbacks. They had identified their player. That's what actually matters, they valued him that much that missing on him and settling on one of the other quarterbacks was not worth the risk. That's what Giants fans should be happy about. That's exactly why I didn't want a quarterback at 17. If there wasn't a guy that they thought could replace Manning, don't take him..go BPA, but don't get cute and try to get him at 17, because in reality it doesn't take 2 teams to like him, it only takes one, and now you are settling, you get the leftovers..and with quarterback especially I think that's a bad idea.

That's why I laugh at all the praise the Redskins got for Haskins. The Redskins sat and were prepared to take what fell to them, let Haskins go past several quarterback hungry teams and didn't make the effort to move up to secure him, yet now they are touting him as some great selection.

The Redskins either:
A)didn't believe any of the other quarterback hungry teams picking ahead of them thought highly enough of Haskins so they didn't need to move up.
B) Didn't think he was worth trading up for to secure they were able to select the quarterback of their choice.
C)Were prepared to select the highest rated quarterback that fell to them.

For me it looks pretty clear the Redskins went with option C, but none of those options are really a ringing endorsement for Dwayne Haskins and honestly make the Redskins look a bit foolish.

What is indisputable is that the Giants had a stronger conviction on their first round quarterback selection than the Redkskins did. Forget asshats, tweets, media reports or inside info..each teams actions on draft night told you this much.

Matt,

Great post. did you see the draft day video for Buffalo? Their GM made a comment to the group that they may be moving back, depending on what happens with the Giants. I think he was referring to Cincy moving up in front of Denver.
I didn't hear that, but gdiefor's asshat info a week
BSIMatt : 5/17/2019 1:55 pm : link
Before the draft(which looked to be the most accurate prediction of what transpired), suggested the Giants were trying to trade with Buffalo pre draft to get into top 10 to select Jones because they were fearing Cincy and Washington. So it could also have been the Bills were possible trade partners with the Giants in a trade up from 17, and were waiting to see what Giants did at 6.

The giants and bills have discussed a deal to move up to #9 for jones. I'm told it's more likely they just take Jones at six. reason being is the giants think both washington and Cincinatti want Jones as well.

Giants may still trade up to 9 if they take Jones at six for either a defensive player or hockenson. They've fielded calls on Engram as they dont see him as a fit in a powerfootball esque offense.

Remmers is a done deal as long as the giants are pleased with the results of his physical. Contract details all worked out as I already told you.

Again, he was calling this before the draft, so that's another source of suggesting interest from Washington (and in this case Cincinnati)

who is close with Tony Pauline
Just spoke to Tony - If you have a chance read the hysterical media the last two days as you have heard conflicting reports about Gase. Metha says Gase made it clear you dont spend big money on RBs and Cs. Costello and Cimini say Gase wanted Pardis (and Fells) and that Mac said no and that lead to a huge battle. As usual, the beats are all over the place.
Tony spoke to someone very close to Mac today. Guy said Gase is an abrasive SOB and that he kept telling Mac that he HAD to sign Paradis. And that he was SO pushy and so annoying about it that Mac, who is the guy with the history of ignoring the OL and TE (remember he let ASJ walk away over 1 mil) , threw his hands up and said "no way" and that was the beginning of the end of their relationship. Now, we KNOW from prior Tony reports that Paradis agent was baffled over the fact that they never got an offer from the Jets after what they perceived was a good meeting and that Pardis was ready to sign for any reasonable offer. The source (remember this is a pro Mac guy) also told Tony that Mac's theory on team building was you spend money on skill players and defense. Never mentioned OL. So at least on THIS topic the details are starting to jibe and become clear. BL, Gase wanted the C...Mac didnt want to spend the dollars.

As to Bell, the feeling from Gase was Coleman was a better fit for his O and would come a lot cheaper and that he didnt believe in spending big dollars on RBs. Mac, after the Barr fiasco, wanted ot make a splash and CJ was on board for Bell also.

Man I would have loved to get Allen at 6 then trade up to get Jones. we wouldn't have Lawrence or Baker but I am ok with that since we drafted 2 other CB and already had Tomlinson and Slayton from Cuse.
