NFL Primetime- Week 2 of 2001- first games after 9/11

Matt in SGS : 5/16/2019 6:51 pm
Found this on youtube. It was the ESPN Primetime show on Week 2 of the 2001 season...ie- the first set of games back after 9/11.

For the fans who remember that time in history as I realize we have a group of young fans on this site who were too young to remember 9/11, the Giants went into Kansas City in what would have been Week 3 (Week 2 was cancelled).

One thing that I'll always remember was how the fans in KC supported the Giants, and by extension the people of NY/NJ after 9/11. It's the first group of highlights on the show.

Quick football side note, Tiki was a very good screen running back as you can see in the highlights, I hope we see more of that with Saquon this year.

My memory from that game is Thabiti Davis’ salute I believe during the national anthem, then didn’t he also block a punt? Obviously I haven’t watch the video you linked yet.
Maybe not a blocked punt for Davis

but rather outstanding kickoff coverage; I just read Eric’s BBI game review.
Weird day for Collins

Only 4 incompletions, but 3 were INT's!

I lived in KC at the time. Strahan (I think) sprinted out of the tunnel in front of all other players with an American flag. The KC fans were the best. The Giants took out a full page ad in the KC Star the next day thanking the fans.
I was at the first game at Giants Stadium after 9/11.

Just after the national anthem, the pilot of a private jet on its way into Teterboro Airport decided to have a close up look into the stadium and flew very low over the western end of the stadium. Scared the crap out of everyone, given the events of the previous days.

Christ, what a dope
That whole 2001 season was an odd one

9/11 overshadowed pretty much everything and the team seemed to have a post Superbowl year hangover. The OLine got old very quick and Kerry spent a lot of time on his back or running for his life
I remember going to bed very angry they got beat by Denver that opening MNF game obviously not knowing there was going to be much more important things to think about that morning
A group of us - 20 - had tickets to the West Point game on 9/15

The game was postponed and I received a letter in the mail with all sorts of instructions about coming to the game and how the base will have increased security.

If I remembering correctly the game was played on October 6 vs Houston.

We met in Highland Falls, piled into 3 vehicles and the MP's who had all sort of weaponry waved us right in? So much for increased security.

Felt good to be on the base and watch Army football.

One lasting memory of the day was that the band was dressed up - the horn section dressed in bee costumes, my good friend turned to me and said I don't want any US soldiers dressed up in a bee costume.
