J.D. is coming home and hopefully bringing Panarin with him!
Thank God
This rebuild has been outstanding, seems everything the Rangers have done has been golden, with a few exceptions (Spooner and Namestnikov extensions, Skjei long term contract still a question mark, initial McQuaid trade). This team is so loaded with young talent, if even half of them pan out, the Rangers are going to be stacked within 3-4 years. A lot of people don't want Panarin because of the price tag, and now presumably because Kakko will be the face of the franchise going forward, but thinking about having a top 9 of Mika, Kreider, Panarin, Kakko, Chytil, Buchnevich, Kravtsov, Strome, Namestnikov is exciting. You need superstars to win in this league, Mika, Panarin, and Kakko could be a great group to build around.
I bet this is Gordie Clark's last draft as well
Not necessarily, but he and Sather are bosom buddies. Sather handpicked him for the job in 2002.
Clark has not done a good job. The only second round pick that worked out was Stepan. The only pick that's been decent after the third round has been Fast.

I think he's drafted very well, hate to lose him.

He was hired in 2002, so you're neglecting to mention guys like Dubinsky, Callahan, Hagelin...

From Wikapedia: As the man in charge of the New York Rangers scouting and draft for the last eleven ... Let's take a look at the eight years from 2008 to 2015.
He didn't draft

Yeah, you're right. He's been with the team since 2002 but has been the Scouting Director since 2007 when he replaced Don Maloney.
Clark's inability to draft decent players in the later rounds is the reason the Rangers have a lousy fourth line year after year. Look at the Bruins and Lightning. They get excellent grinders in the later rounds so they have impactful fourth lines.
Not defending Clark or not, don't know his role, but this is the NHL, check out most teams draft records. Lightning are really the only exception I see consistently get talent post 1st round.
The Kucherov's of the world are few and far between, most NHL talent is from the 1st round.
since 2007
Who are the Penguins post-1st round gems? Jake Muzzin, Brian Rust, Matt Murray, Jake Guentzel
Who are the Capital post-1st round gems? Holtby & Orlov Maybe Grubbauer
Some teams may have a player or two more than the Rangers, some a player or two less, but it's not really that common.
Miss your first round picks is where you get in trouble.
Success Rate of First-Round Draft Picks
Of course, not all draft picks are created equal. The guys picked in the first round are a cut above the rest.
Of the 494 career players drafted in the 1990s, 160 were selected in the first round.
Of those 160 career players, over half have played more than 500 NHL games.
Among the older players (those drafted from 1990 to 1994), six first-round picks had made it to 1,000 games. Another couple of dozen were still active in 2007 and within reach of 1,000.
Based on the 1990s sample, a first-round draft pick has a 63 percent chance of being a career player.
Results can vary widely from year to year.
The 1993 NHL draft produced 22 career players from 26 first-round picks.
In 1999, less than half of the first-round selections went on to become career players (12 out of 28).
Beyond the First Round
When you look at players drafted in later rounds, the NHL dream begins to fade in a hurry.
From 1990 to 1999, about a quarter of the players selected in the second round turned into NHL career players.
Those drafted in the third round and beyond are really up against it. From over 2,000 players selected in the third round and beyond during the 1990s, just 261 made it as NHL career players. That's about 12 percent.
Canada's The Sports Network (TSN) did a similar analysis with similar results, looking at draft picks from 2000 to 2009. Based on that analysis, TSN concluded that 80 percent of first-round picks become at least low-level NHL players, while 44 percent of those players selected in the second round make the NHL a career. Just 30 percent of third-round picks become NHL players, and the percentages continue to drop in the later rounds....

Not sure if his role, but I also hope there is an upgrade over Ruff.
Here is is on the Finland game
"Playing against Finland, we obviously got a good look at Kaapo Kakko. He's a special player. He definitely has that "it" factor you're looking for in a high-end pick and he hangs onto pucks really well. He was a stud."
Have you seen Hughes skate? The way he moves in traffic. Franchise player for sure. Kakko might be too
YUUUUUUUUGE
What about you?
Maybe they find a taker for Shatty as well, but he at least has so redeeming potential
very classy statement from CBJ ownership:
“On behalf of my family, our ownership group and the entire Blue Jackets organization, I want to thank J.D. and wish him, Diana and their family nothing but the best in the years to come.”
Panarin would be nice, but NY teams have had such mixed success in big FA acquisitions, including the Rangers. I'd prefer JD stay the course with the groundwork laid by Gorton here. So many promising, young players about to come on board, and still so much wasted cap on contracts soon to expire, let the re-build continue and the team coalesce, develop chemistry and character a bit and then assess what pieces make sense.
