Peyton Manning would have entered 1997 draft

Jay on the Island : 5/18/2019 11:38 am
Rumors are flying within league circles that the Jets may make a run at the future Hall of Fame quarterback who has periodically been linked to NFL management possibilities. And Gase, who worked with Manning in Denver, possibly would be one of the few guys who could draw Manning back into football.
Manning wouldnt be a traditional G.M., but Johnson has made it clear that hes not looking for a traditional G.M.

Its more than a talent-evaluation guy, Johnson said Wednesday. I want a great manager, a communicator, who can collaborate well with the building. Im convinced were going to find that person.

Manning definitely would be that person. But its unknown whether Manning would be interested in being that person. If he is, it would fulfill a match more than 20 years in the making; in 1997, Manning supposedly would have left Tennessee early if he had an assurance that the Jets would make him the first overall pick in the draft.

Was this known at the time? For those who don't remember the Jets traded down in 1997 from 1st overall to 8th. They passed on Orlando Pace, Walter Jones, Peter Boulware, and Shawn Springs and took James Farrior at 8.

That was Parcells' first draft, shopping for the groceries. I seem to recall that Peyton made it clear that he didn't want to play under Parcells.
yes, this was known

and you can chalk it up to Parcells' stubbornness. Manning wanted that assurance he would be #1 and Parcells didn't want to be dictated to do anything. Manning made a comment at the time to the effect of "either you draft me #1 or I'll spend the next 15 years beating your ass".

I suppose we should be happy that Parcells gave the Jets 1 really good season in 1998, and otherwise kept Peyton out of NY.

Just when you think they might be headed in the right direction, they revert right back to who they have always been
That sounds like bullshit

The Jets wouldn't have given one of the best QB prospects a guarantee? When they had Neil O'Donnel or whoever at that point at QB? I don't believe that.
More like he stayed at Tennessee

When he realized the Jets were going to pick him with the first pick.

I thought that was what he told the Colts.

Parcells the GM? not so good
I had always heard ...
FStubbs : 5/18/2019 6:54 pm : link
... that the reason he didn't enter the 1997 draft was specifically because he didn't want to go to the Jets.

That's kind of how I remember it going down as well, but I thought I was more Manning didn't even want to risk going to the Jets and playing in NYC. Since they had the #1 pick, he stayed in school instead of chancing it.

Parcells was an excellent GM. He was HC and GM with the Cowboys. When he arrived they were a joke but he quickly turned them into one of the most talented teams in the NFL. The Dolphins were a mess also and he turned them around but left too early before he could build a sustainable winner.

The '98 Jets were one half away from a Super Bowl appearance and who knows what would've happened in '99 if Testaverde didn't tear his achilles in week one

This is a mix-up and not true as Matt wrote it. Manning actually told Polian that if the Colts passed on him for Leaf he would kick the Colts ass every time they played.
