Players defined by their mistakes

RicosRoidedElbow : 5/18/2019 5:25 pm
Now. I want you all to understand Plaxico was my all time favorite Giant. He made plays and I got excited when the ball would go his way. Eli would throw the ball 28 feet over his head but Plax still came down with it. Great red-zone target for Eli.

I was getting into a heated argument at work today with this idiot who would only talk about Burress shooting himself whenever his name came up during Giants talk. I said, look, this is the guy who caught the winning touchdown in Super Bowl but nope he kept talking about the gun incident.

I said sorry if you are way too moronic to only see the bad things athletes did and youre a Giant fan? Why even bother? He should be a hero to you. And like Coughlin said at least you didn't shoot someone else!

He wouldn't give up and just wouldn't listen to someone smarter than he was. There are ton of other instances, I guess Bill Buckner bobble or Jim Mora playoffs rant defined him over his career.

Now try to understand what I am saying here, what athletes body of work has been canceled out by one thing or one bad play?

Telling Giant fans they are not true fans if they don't see things the way you do. People remember the good and the bad. You telling them they are wrong, makes you a jerk. Same thing, every post you are on.

The original “Wrong-Way”.

The most tragic example is Andres Escobar, who paid for a World Cup one goal with his life.
Own goal, that is.

Sports fans around the world reflected briefly on the senseless tragedy of Escobar’s murder, then went right back to being @$$holes.

when that name comes up, you should be focused on the game winning Super Bowl touchdown when Plaxicos name comes up, the coin of his realm as a Giant. Not obsessing over the point where the shooting himself incident over rides his skills and what he did. Since no, no one was hurt. It's still about the game winner and it will always be, nothing gets cancelled out.

Wait, so I'm not supposed to be upset that Burress's stupid, careless, criminal behavior most likely cost the Giants the chance to win back-to-back Super Bowls? I'm just supposed to skip over that and think back to his catching the go-ahead TD pass in the Super Bowl the year before? Oh, and I'm supposed to take solace in the fact that by the grace of God this fool didn't hurt anyone else with his carelessness?

Sorry...not happening. Plax didn't go out like a champion - he went out like an idiot, and ultimately like a felon.

My thoughts exactly. Plax is nowhere near a “hero” ... great talent who never fully lived up to his potential ... helping win a SB and likely costing us another pretty much sums up his career in a nutshell

And there you are.

Purposefully posting about the negatives, LETTING a negative thing outweigh the good thing a player, someone did. Holding your grudge.

You guys are men right?

And nope. No one got hurt. It's nothing to overlook, just stating a clear, simple, concise fact.

I guess it's just obvious that you're manipulated through words of the press. Maybe I was wrong about society's feedback.

I know what you are doing, though. Just fall in love with the OP and run away together?

But seriously, to not talk about anything he did as a Giant PLAYER (like co-workers) and only pivot to the one negative proves we just live in this world. That's what I'm trying to say to you.

It's also no guarantee the Giants win another Super Bowl with him. Plaxico was hurt and only had 35 catches that year.

Did you even see the game vs the eagles? The defensive line was spent. Eli stunk.

That's like saying you took everything away from me the night before my college graduation when I got busted for possession. I know I may not be perfect but I still graduated and found my way because I worked hard. Maybe you should get the facts and have an understanding about the places people come from.

Plax was an Eagle-killer. Without having to defend him, the Eagles were able to load up the box and sell out to stuff the run and pressure Eli. The WR's we had could not compensate for his absence. Perhaps if he had been there, the Giants could have gotten a few more first downs, a few more scores, and their defense wouldn't have gassed. And there was no reason for him NOT to be there other than his own stupidity. That's the only relevant fact. Make all the excuses you want for that dumbass, but don't try and sell them to me.

Other than that, I found the rest of your diatribe patently incoherent, eminently nonsensical, more than a little laughable and really not worthy of any further response. Good day.
The credit for the Super Bowl TD goes to Gilbride

He had that play loaded up for a blitz zero look, and Belichick gave it to him. That play was a touchdown before the ball was snapped.

Remember, Plax was a non-factor in that game because he "slipped in the shower" the night before and hurt his knee. What actually happened is anyone's guess.

And don't forget he also almost destroyed his Giants career before it started with another gun incident.

Guy was a huge asshole.
Chris Webber was the first to come to mind for me.

He never lived down calling that TO in the '93 title game vs. UNC, though in his defense people were calling for TO from the bench.

Great player, but a man who I think was scarred after that. That dude played a mean hot potato in the pros come the spring.

Read the article I’ve linked.

Here’s another one:

And another one:

Plax was a POS who never lived up to his true potential. He is nowhere near the “hero” you want to pretend he is.

RicosRoidedElbow : 5/19/2019 8:03 pm : link
Did he not perform well on the field as a Giant? Yes. Now it's, he doesn't deserve any credit for the Super Bowl GAME. WINNING. TOUCH. DOWN. against an 18-0 Patriots team that averaged 40 points a game?

POS? He shot himself. Not someone else, not his neighbor, not his friend. Being a POS is shooting your dog or reading about some punk kid who decides to punch his mother. Fine if you want to call him stupid, thats fine but POS? I think that is a bit too far.

To go after the earlier comment with Vick to to think that him and Vick are in the same sentence is absurd.

But again, I get your "focusing on the negative" (welcome to American culture), you guys are like leaches and cannot get over the dumb shooting story. Negative thinking. There are two doors: one that has a projector of the game winning touchdown and one has endless articles about the gun incident and you just care more about getting your fat thumbs so you can give your self-important opinion about someone (that I admit) did something absolutely stupid.

But it shouldn't override his success as a player with your favorite team.

My point here is (and I am actually surprised there are so many people who are this way) they cannot get off it and are proving my point exactly.

You all just want to sound as if you're a bunch of law experts and you like to salivate over the scandals and stuff, want to get your opinion in there. You are forgetting that I was talking about his play on the field, and then you guys say him not being there was the reason why they lost. HUH? So by that claim he was a great and was a hero (in terms of football).

As for the defense, they were getting worn out anyway by the end of the season. The telltale signs were present in the Carolina game. Jonathan Stewart had 4 touchdowns in that game!

Tuck got hurt and also Cofield was getting nicked up. The Giants were also down Osi and Strahan was not coming back.

The dude showed up and he had a good game against the Packers, and was he not injured that whole season? He had a good year as well. He didn't drop balls that were thrown to him like OBJ when the big lights were on.

Lol. Where was Gilbirde's genius game-plan when he called a draw vs Philly on 3rd and 13 in that same playoff game that Plaxico cost us?

So yeah Plax is a hero in terms of football because of Super Bowl 42. I know you're all so perfect and do not have any mugshots of yourself out there on the internet and yes let us all lump him in with OJ and Vick.

Of course you take another shot at Plax. Totally fucking predictable.

You conveniently forget the clinic Plax put on in the GB game 2 weeks earlier. Without his performance, Giants get no where near that game vs NE.

But I suppose in your fucking warped mind, Eli gets ALL the credit for that.

Pump the brakes. There's a middle ground between that and focusing solely on the sweatpants/gun/club incident.

Plaxico Burress should be nobody's hero. You can acknowledge the on field feats you choose to acknowledge while also pointing out that he's was a complete idiot who endangered people's lives. The fact that he didn't happen to shoot anyone else is irrelevant.

I'm pretty much done with this discussion but if you're saying him being off the team after the shooting cost them a Super Bowl trip, where would they have been in the season without him? He did help compile all those wins, if they looked like the team that played Philly, Dallas, Minnesota and Philly again in the playoffs, doubt they would've been 11-1.

I get that everyone is pissed at him but he did make us better. Strahan/Osi being gone didn't do much and Tuck was nicked up, If I remember correct.

Making absolutely no sense, none. One of the only things I will award you is that your post was in English.

You would think someone would be out getting their favorite newsletter, getting a bagel and coffee or watching the NFL Network but - nope - you are thinking of me at 7 in the morning, being a weirdo and saying absurd garbage.

Put it this way, I'm a huge fan of Plaxico's. I might be a big fan of his but I will try put it in a way for you to understand. The same passion for Plax might similar to the way you feel about OBJ's dressing style. It's not as important as rushing to the front lines to defend Odell wearing a dress on a message board against middle aged men who wear "cargo shorts" (big deal?) or whatever other contemporary fat man styles you curl your lip at... but keep lets keep that same energy, though.

They both won. There's a body of work at place for both of them at this point, for better or worse, but both climbed the mountain top, so neither are defined by their failures. Your friend just sounds like an idiot. I even know people who think of Mo Rivera as the guy who blew Game 7 of the world series. These people are just trolls and not the ones who will ultimately be passing down the history that'll stick.

But there are players who are defined by their failures like you said. Most of the responses covered the guys I think of. I keep thinking I have one and I look to see it's already covered. Sanchez does come to mind as another poster said for the butt fumble. Bill Buckner, Leon Lett, Chris Weber and Scott Norwood already covered.

I think to a degree Patrick Ewing's and Henrik Lundqvist as guys who never could win the big one (though Hank still has some time), but they also don't have that defining awful moment, at least Hank doesn't. Ewing has the missed layup.

Good post.

Fine, the Kings were the better team in 2014. It seemed as if there was no fucking hole that team couldn't climb out of. LA even fell down 0-3 to the Sharks in the first round.

2015, I thought the Rangers surprise me and prove me wrong and win the whole thing. Nope. 2 dud no goal games on home ice, vs Tampa Bay.

I really, REALLY wanted to see how the Rangers would do against Chicago that year. Second most disappointing matchup I didnt get to see in my years watching sports. First place goes the Giants in 2002 vs Philly. I really, REALLY felt in my soul the Giants could beat those fucks. McNabb was injured, only problem was that Tampa Bay was still out there but some coach and team couldn't handle a 38-14 lead vs the 49ers, way worse than Desean Jackson.

So well never know...
