NFT: Wearing sneakers with jeans

OnTap : 5/18/2019 5:36 pm
on a casual day to day basis, is that a fashion "faux pas" for men in their 30s and 40s? Why do most guys wear casually with jeans (or shorts) these days? I need to update my look based on some harsh recent feedback. Thanks

Ditto!

LOL, I don't dress anything like that - there's actually a lot of in between.

(The boots are nice, though!)

I just think the premise of this thread is funny. Sneakers with jeans don't have to be Lee Pipes from 1995 with a pair of bulky Monarchs. It's actually extremely common. The idea that it's some sort of "faux pas" coming from guys who are likely still wearing cargo shorts with cell phone belt clips and a gut the size of a beachball hanging over it is just... entertaining to me. :D

Yeah those look pretty good.

PJ, on the manliness scale you keep mentioning, I'm guessing boots have to be more alpha than sneakers (assuming with the same non-beta husky cargo shorts).
Fair enough
pjcas18 : 5/20/2019 10:59 am : link
and I've never owned a pair of jeans shorts. (no offense Greg).

My point is everything is a) situational and b) up to you

my situations:

1) at a customer for work, I wear either a suit and tie or suit without tie

2) in our office which is business casual, I wear either dress pants and a shirt or nice jeans and shoes, sometimes with a blazer

3) casual and there are many levels of casual.

For example. I will be at the Boston Garden next Wednesday with my 11-year old with 20,000 other people. Mostly males in the 25 - 45 range. I guarantee you 95% of the crowd will have on jeans, sneakers and baseball hats. maybe Bruins jerseys (unfortunately).

that's obviously a unique casual setting, but that's the bulk of any sporting event in the colder weather

then what other casual settings are there?

working out: gym shorts and sneakers. maybe long pants, like track suit pants if it's bitter cold and I'm running outside, but I almost never work out in pants.

going on a date: no, you're not likely to wear jeans and sneakers with a baseball hat on a date.

out to dinner: again, if it's a nice restaurant, probably not wearing jeans and sneakers to dinner, certainly not a baseball hat

just hanging out with buddies to watch football, play poker, fantasy football draft, whatever, sure I might wear jeans, sneakers and sometimes a baseball hat

golf/fishing, shorts and golf shoes with a visor or baseball hat and fishing, it's shorts, sneakers and a baseball hat

anyway, like I said A: situational, and B: more importantly who gives a Fuck what another dude wears? and as a dude I don't care what other dudes think about what I wear.

For some of you I picture the final scene of Super Bad where Seth is trying on skinny jeans. "it's like a three thing...it's like ball dick. ball" Evan: "It's like a division symbol". LOL. No matter how much criticism I ever get I am never wearing a pair of skinny jeans.

You seem to have a lot of disdain for fashion. If you really don't care as much as you claim to not care, why do you care what other guys are wearing?

Is there a classification that's even lesser than "beta"? Gamma maybe?

express yourself, but only do it according to our standards.

We're debating sneakers with jeans, yet athletes and movies stars are lauded for wearing some of the dumbest shit imaginable.
Let's review the advice of BBI romeo's
pjcas18 : 5/20/2019 3:44 pm : link
and fashion plates and some of the more successful males today and their wardrobes.

My advice to anyone who care, do not take one shred of advice from anyone on here about fashion. Unless you want to be a skinny jeans wearing loser.

No, I'm not comparing BBIers with celebrities, just saying the fashion advice on here is coming from a less than ideal source (for people who care). WEAR WHAT YOU WANT AND MAKES YOU COMFORTABLE (unless you're in a setting that calls for something different like a job interview or a fancy location)

Let's start with everyone's favorite TB12:

What is he wearing with those jeans? And he's not 12 anymore yet still wearing jeans? And holy shit he's wearing a baseball hat. Maybe he's trying to be incognito as one of the fat no-nothing BBIers living in their parents basement. If only he had a fanny pack.

but wait...there's more:

and more....and not jeans, but holy shit a baseball hat

more jeans and sneakers from TB12:

ok, enough of Brady, why do we always compare people to Patriots. We're know they're one of a kind. What about leo DiCaprio:

I bet he was considering his Olukai leather sandals or perhaps sneakers like a dude. holy fuck too a baseball hat.

Leo with another Hollywood A lister (B-lister?) Toby McGuire the fashion sense of a booby.

But wait...there's more...not a fan of rolled up jeans, but what is he wearing on his feet?

Ok, enough of Leo, who is maybe more traditional? Even modern? Kanye?

Sure looks like sneakers in that picture on the left (and I don't even think they're his own sneaker line - can't tell):

these are though:

Whose next?

Keanu Reeves? Maybe the coolest guy in Hollywood.

The Rock? Maybe he's more like us, you know, a normal guy. I even went to Middle School with him (though we called him Duane).

Go ahead, put him on your old man list

and again:

So, you're thinking these guys are not your typical BBIer, ok fair point. Let's use another example. Say maybe Jonah Hill?

too skinny above? ok, fat Jonah Hll

yeah, but Jonah is funny. Ok Seth Rogen.

and more

Just for humor am I mocking anyone (like the Seinfeld Cowboy boot episode and my fanny pack comment - I think people get that distinction).

Mostly, I am maintaining to the OP he can and should wear whatever makes him comfortable and I have provided examples that some of the biggest names in male fashion today and some of the biggest male celebrities do in fact wear jeans and sneakers when the opportunity is appropriate.

Guys who abhor fashion usually feel that way because they don't look good in anything fashionable...

It's a high school mentality.

I agree with the "wear whatever you want sentiment" - despite making jokes about the jean shorts/cargo shorts/fanny packs, etc.

And no, that doesn't make me a painted on, skinny jeans guy. There's nothing wrong with slim fit, though - wearing parachute pants went out with the 90's, fellas. Fitted looks sharp/neat and doesn't have to make you a "hipster" or a "girl" or whatever you want to call it.

Wear what makes you happy.

Point is - the premise of this thread is ridiculous. Go walk around Manhattan in basically any season other than the summer and you'll see thousands of people wearing sneakers with jeans. There's nothing "faux pas" about it. It's totally casual and normal.
This is a really dumb thread and it's upsetting

I do have some tailors advise with new suits to go without cuffed suit pants, that un-cuffed is in style, but I prefer the cuffed look, it's more traditional, and makes me more comfortable so I stick with it.

there is a right way and a wrong way to do the same thing.

TB12 falls on both sides on the ledger up there.

And PJ has a very wide definition of jeans (almost as wide as the pant leg in that one TB pic).

Wear whatever the fuck you want. Don't live your life trying to please other people or meet their expectations. There is a good chance you will die having not done something you always wanted to because someone else expected you to behave a certain way.

You will appear old and grandmotherly with a fanny pack, but if you find it convenient who gives a shit.

I wear a baseball hat on the golf course (or a visor), when coaching hockey, sometimes going to my local dive bar, and I don't care who thinks there is anything wring with it. No idea why it would be a badge of honor to never had a desire to wear a baseball "cap".

you seem like my old boring relatives growing up that as soon as I heard we were going to their house or they'd be somewhere I was going I tried to get out of it because I knew it would be boring as hell.

above pictures as “sneakers”. Most of them are sportier shoes or very casual sneakers. A few in there are the awful jeans + running shoe combo that not even DiCaprio can get away with, just awful.
Also, many of those pictures
UConn4523 : 5/20/2019 7:55 pm : link
are them out trying not to be seen. Purposely looking like shit, with a hat on, glasses, hoodie, shitty fitting jeans and sneakers aren’t what they would normally wear.

I actually feel bad for guys who don't or can't operate day-to-day in a pair of jeans and sneakers. Half of my career I've been saddled with the blight of business casual. It's truly awful. I can't stand the feeling of chinos, tucked shirts, belts, loafers yuck.

I've worked in tech my whole career in oil, fashion, and retail. The absolute worst was day-to-day working in a product and engineering department at an oil major and looking forward to 5 years of Fridays and the relief of jeans.

The souls of James Dean, Elvis, and Merle Haggard must cringe at the site of a guy in Dockers and a tucked polo.

get some nice fitting jeans and some nice sneakers
Platos : 5/20/2019 10:49 pm : link
fuck anyone who says you can't be comfortable.

but i would invest in some nice jeans with a good tapered fit(not nut hugging skinny jeans, but tapered so you don't have massive leg openings). remember good denim will last a long time, don't get sticker shock.

as for sneakers i'm a fan. my favorite are new balance models made in US or UK. comfortable, great materials, well designed. check out US MADE 997, 998, 1300, 1400, 574(These are mostly asian made, not as good quality and shape, still nice though), 990(earlier model style like the v1 and v2, the v3 is more techy looking)

UK made models 576, 577, 1500.

these sneakers look great with jeans in my book.

as for nike, you can't go wrong with all white or all black air force 1 lowtops. i don't care how old you are. adidas stan smiths in the classic white/green or white/navy colorways.
