on a casual day to day basis, is that a fashion "faux pas" for men in their 30s and 40s? Why do most guys wear casually with jeans (or shorts) these days? I need to update my look based on some harsh recent feedback. Thanks
Fit is everything. As is the tupe of jean and sneaker. Im rocking Jordan 3s with Levis 513s at the moment. Likely it was the particular combo you were skewered for.
As long as you have money and can buy them things and take them places. In the south I ha e see. Some ugly dudes with crap style with some real hot wives and girl friends.

I rarely wear sneakers with jeans. Usually casual oxfords or loafers. I also rarely wear jeans unless casual Friday at work or out to dinner. I deal with the Florida heat 365 days a year so it's usually shorts on the weekend and on days off.

this. You can either look stylish or a clone of jerry Seinfeld circa 1992.
Of course you can wear sneakers and jeans. Just make sure youre wearing skinny jeans, or at least something with a narrow fit from the knee to the ankle, and yes, fat guys can and should wear narrow fit clothing (most of its stretch fabric now anyway). And wear some cool kicks, Nike, NB, doesnt really matter, make them comfy, but bright colors are in and if you can afford the special edition sneakers thats cool too. Try some narrow fit kahkis from the Gap or Banana Republic or J Crew. Tee shirts are fine as is a snug Oxford, long or short sleeve.
Theres probably better places than BBI for fashion. Try Instagram with #mensfashion. Look online at NYT Fashion of the Times, or retailer websites. Or just take a walk around Chelsea if youre in the city.
are the new business casual. People wear a nice pair of jeans (usually with shoes) and a blazer.
Almost all the people I know though wear jeans and sneakers for a more casual look.
As long as your jeans aren't skinny jeans - in which case you should kick your own ass - you can pick your choice of footwear. Casual shoes like loafers, boots like tims, winter boots, sneakers, whatever you want.
And who the fuck cares what anyone else thinks, I mean jeans and sneakers is not like this (socks and sandals):
I can picture all the dads here with their velcro new balance, jeans and fanny packs.
What's funnier is that many have justified the look. They are totally unaware that is a fashion faux pas with it's own name - Sneans. I wonder how many have been featured on this page.

to me, wearing anything but sneakers with jeans is weird. At what age does it become a "fashion faux pas" to be wearing sneakers all the time?

so you're telling me when you're running out of your house quickly u decide to wear slacks or loafers instead of sneakers? When i said "all the time" I didn't mean for all occasions, just casually

If you are running out of the house to go running or to the gym, then sneakers are appropriate. All other times, they are not. Now, it doesn't mean that you have to wear business dress shoes. It isn't a binary choice. Footwear comes in many styles. It is alright to have more than 2 types of shoes.
Life is different everywhere. I used to buy a pair of Nike air maxes every year when I lived in Jersey. My old pair would become my gym shoes. Now in Florida I just buy a pair of reefs every year. Have boat shoes and cotton clothes for fancier things that rarely come up here. Seattle you can wear dad shoes and flannel year round and nobody judges.
rocking runing shoes is a big no. classic jordans or adidas, chucks or vans your good. anything new balance you better be mall walking or going to the gym. then therea all 7000 vetsions of scetchers. anything with lobg cotton laces is probably a no go.
might argue its more important to wear proper, non dad jeans.
Are there are actually other things you can wear with jeans...
LL Bean Camp Moccasins as my casual shoe and Cole Haan Tucker Venetians at work. Both are very comfortable and I think they look fine, but my fashion sense isnt very good.
RE: One of the advantages of being on the other side of 50
Any man any age can wear jeans and sneakers and it works in any non-formal setting.
The most important thing is to buy jeans that fit. Even if you don't want to spend a ton, go to any Macy's or JC Penney and get a 40 dollar pair of Levi's.
There are countless cuts and styles. A pair of jeans fits if you comfortably get them around your waste and don't need a belt, there isn't a fist full of material extra in the thighs or back, and there is a little length extra at the bottom.
Every classic sneakers looks good with jeans. And again no need to spend a ton. For the summer a pair of slips ons is an easy, great simple look. Vans, Chucks, or Nikes.

Who gives a shit. I will say that probably because of you fashion caring wannabes I've noticed that they're sweetening men's pant sizes.
I need to lose about 20 pounds to fit back into my Levi's 505's from the 90's. They're good quality and I'm saving them. My current Levi's and any other pants I buy now have to be at least 2-3 waist sizes smaller or they fall down and now half the jeans they make are stretch pants.
who say you should not wear jeans with sneakers are probably typing it with their skinny jeans on.
Is there anything more emo than critiquing another man's attire?
I would care less about what dudes think more about what women think unless of course you should care what dudes think - nttawwt.
I work in the corporate world so I have a good idea what my style is like, very traditional, outside of the corporate world at this point it's pretty much coaching (hockey coaching pants similar to track suit but with the bauer label), yard work, or vacation.
my wife has only once commented on my attire. She told me gray (t-shirt) and tan (short) don't match. She's probably right but I ignored her.
wear your jeans and sneakers and don't give a F what anyone else thinks.
I think guys look ridiculous in what I described above. Good casual sneakers are fine with jeans, your running shoes are not.
I wear a good, slim fit jean. Plenty of room for the kids and dont look like a slob. Nothing wrong with wanting to look good.
Slim fit is one thing. I thought the guy at Brooks Brothers who sold me slim fit shirts was able to sell ice to an eskimo as I was walking out of the store thinking WTF did I just buy? (I'm 6' 215 - slim fit is not in my wardrobe). but slim fit is the right fit for their shirts. their classic shirts are too roomy.
but skinny jeans seem very beta to me. and guys who like them should not care what I think. Like I said above, men should care what women think. if women like seeing dudes in skinny jeans and pointy european shoes - score. if they prefer men in jeans and any footwear then score for them.
at all in about 30 years. Once you're out of your teens ditch the look.
Ill bet youre just bringing in all the ladies with you GQ style..
Its amusing that guys actually think anyone on the planet gives a crap about what youre wearing. In a world full of sexy females wearing yoga pants, daisy dukes and skin tight tank tops, not one person on the planet is looking at a guys feet or even gives it a second thought
There are plenty of professions and industries where being able to dress casually and not look like a slob are required.
I work daily with the ownership and executives at digital and development agencies, and the CEOs are often wearing nice jeans and nice sneakers with a blazer.
If you go out to a nice restaurant or bar in any major city you'll see plenty of successful, stylish, and well put together men wearing jeans and sneakers.
Not looking like a slob really simply requires your jeans to fit you, based on your body type and comfort level, and sneakers that are meant to be worn with pants. If you're a slender guy you actually do want to go for a skinny cut because there will be less fabric in the rear and thighs, and that's where a pair of jeans can make a slender guy look like a clown. I'm not talking leggings, but even a Levi's 510 is a comfortable cut.
As UConn pointed out above, you don't want to wear work out or running shoes, because shocker these are not meant to be worn with pants and physically don't work well.
Lifestyle sneakers are a multi billion dollar industry not because people are looking like bums.
Apparently I am a fashion idiot. Inherited it from my father who wore bermuda shorts with white socks and wingtips that were too banged up to wear for work.
In my defense though, I have never been tempted to wear a fanny pack or a baseball cap.
most of you people are a bunch of joyless, subservient, beta males.
Wear whatever the fuck you want. Don't live your life trying to please other people or meet their expectations. There is a good chance you will die having not done something you always wanted to because someone else expected you to behave a certain way.
You will appear old and grandmotherly with a fanny pack, but if you find it convenient who gives a shit.
I wear a baseball hat on the golf course (or a visor), when coaching hockey, sometimes going to my local dive bar, and I don't care who thinks there is anything wring with it. No idea why it would be a badge of honor to never had a desire to wear a baseball "cap".
you seem like my old boring relatives growing up that as soon as I heard we were going to their house or they'd be somewhere I was going I tried to get out of it because I knew it would be boring as hell.
They are totally unaware that is a fashion faux pas with it's own name - Sneans.
Maybe....or maybe they don't give a flying fuck what some hipster nancy boy thinks of his attire.
I have one person on earth whose opinion of my clothing carries weight: my wife. I sort of have to care what she says. Outside of her, I couldn't possibly care less about what anyone thinks about the way I dress.

if you do, then the person who have you the feedback is inside your head..
Personally, I try not to do it unless I am walking around the neighborhood for a little exercise...I do think it looks stupid if you wear, workout/running sneakers with jeans.
LOL, I don't dress anything like that - there's actually a lot of in between.
(The boots are nice, though!)
I just think the premise of this thread is funny. Sneakers with jeans don't have to be Lee Pipes from 1995 with a pair of bulky Monarchs. It's actually extremely common. The idea that it's some sort of "faux pas" coming from guys who are likely still wearing cargo shorts with cell phone belt clips and a gut the size of a beachball hanging over it is just... entertaining to me. :D
I like those boots, thanks for the recommendation pj!
Yeah those look pretty good.
PJ, on the manliness scale you keep mentioning, I'm guessing boots have to be more alpha than sneakers (assuming with the same non-beta husky cargo shorts).
and I've never owned a pair of jeans shorts. (no offense Greg).
My point is everything is a) situational and b) up to you
my situations:
1) at a customer for work, I wear either a suit and tie or suit without tie
2) in our office which is business casual, I wear either dress pants and a shirt or nice jeans and shoes, sometimes with a blazer
3) casual and there are many levels of casual.
For example. I will be at the Boston Garden next Wednesday with my 11-year old with 20,000 other people. Mostly males in the 25 - 45 range. I guarantee you 95% of the crowd will have on jeans, sneakers and baseball hats. maybe Bruins jerseys (unfortunately).
that's obviously a unique casual setting, but that's the bulk of any sporting event in the colder weather
then what other casual settings are there?
working out: gym shorts and sneakers. maybe long pants, like track suit pants if it's bitter cold and I'm running outside, but I almost never work out in pants.
going on a date: no, you're not likely to wear jeans and sneakers with a baseball hat on a date.
out to dinner: again, if it's a nice restaurant, probably not wearing jeans and sneakers to dinner, certainly not a baseball hat
just hanging out with buddies to watch football, play poker, fantasy football draft, whatever, sure I might wear jeans, sneakers and sometimes a baseball hat
golf/fishing, shorts and golf shoes with a visor or baseball hat and fishing, it's shorts, sneakers and a baseball hat
anyway, like I said A: situational, and B: more importantly who gives a Fuck what another dude wears? and as a dude I don't care what other dudes think about what I wear.
For some of you I picture the final scene of Super Bad where Seth is trying on skinny jeans. "it's like a three thing...it's like ball dick. ball" Evan: "It's like a division symbol". LOL. No matter how much criticism I ever get I am never wearing a pair of skinny jeans.
I like those boots, thanks for the recommendation pj!

I like those boots, but the skinny jeans and boots combo are what makes it beta.
and fashion plates and some of the more successful males today and their wardrobes.
My advice to anyone who care, do not take one shred of advice from anyone on here about fashion. Unless you want to be a skinny jeans wearing loser.
No, I'm not comparing BBIers with celebrities, just saying the fashion advice on here is coming from a less than ideal source (for people who care). WEAR WHAT YOU WANT AND MAKES YOU COMFORTABLE (unless you're in a setting that calls for something different like a job interview or a fancy location)
Let's start with everyone's favorite TB12:
What is he wearing with those jeans? And he's not 12 anymore yet still wearing jeans? And holy shit he's wearing a baseball hat. Maybe he's trying to be incognito as one of the fat no-nothing BBIers living in their parents basement. If only he had a fanny pack.
but wait...there's more:
and more....and not jeans, but holy shit a baseball hat
more jeans and sneakers from TB12:
ok, enough of Brady, why do we always compare people to Patriots. We're know they're one of a kind. What about leo DiCaprio:
I bet he was considering his Olukai leather sandals or perhaps sneakers like a dude. holy fuck too a baseball hat.
Leo with another Hollywood A lister (B-lister?) Toby McGuire the fashion sense of a booby.
But wait...there's more...not a fan of rolled up jeans, but what is he wearing on his feet?
Ok, enough of Leo, who is maybe more traditional? Even modern? Kanye?
Sure looks like sneakers in that picture on the left (and I don't even think they're his own sneaker line - can't tell):
these are though:
Whose next?
Keanu Reeves? Maybe the coolest guy in Hollywood.
The Rock? Maybe he's more like us, you know, a normal guy. I even went to Middle School with him (though we called him Duane).
Go ahead, put him on your old man list
and again:
So, you're thinking these guys are not your typical BBIer, ok fair point. Let's use another example. Say maybe Jonah Hill?
why are you so riled up about this? Let's get back to talking hockey!
I just hate seeing the little guy bullied by the big guy.
If someone is not confident enough to dress themselves I hate to see them manipulated by these jackals.
You do realize you're doing the exact same thing except mocking those who are dressing fashionably (leaving aside whether or not you like that particular style), right?

Just for humor am I mocking anyone (like the Seinfeld Cowboy boot episode and my fanny pack comment - I think people get that distinction).
Mostly, I am maintaining to the OP he can and should wear whatever makes him comfortable and I have provided examples that some of the biggest names in male fashion today and some of the biggest male celebrities do in fact wear jeans and sneakers when the opportunity is appropriate.
Guys who abhor fashion usually feel that way because they don't look good in anything fashionable...
It's a high school mentality.
I agree with the "wear whatever you want sentiment" - despite making jokes about the jean shorts/cargo shorts/fanny packs, etc.
And no, that doesn't make me a painted on, skinny jeans guy. There's nothing wrong with slim fit, though - wearing parachute pants went out with the 90's, fellas. Fitted looks sharp/neat and doesn't have to make you a "hipster" or a "girl" or whatever you want to call it.
Wear what makes you happy.
Point is - the premise of this thread is ridiculous. Go walk around Manhattan in basically any season other than the summer and you'll see thousands of people wearing sneakers with jeans. There's nothing "faux pas" about it. It's totally casual and normal.
Once, in the late 90's I wore a braided leather belt, and one of my buddies said, dude those belts went out with grunge.
otherwise no negative commentary.
I do have some tailors advise with new suits to go without cuffed suit pants, that un-cuffed is in style, but I prefer the cuffed look, it's more traditional, and makes me more comfortable so I stick with it.
"Keanu Reeves... maybe the coolest guy in Hollywood."
And this is who is issuing a critique on style.
You seem to give a ton of shit about what men wear.
Are you a fashion designer? because this is very friggen weird.
What is appropriate? Odell in a dress lol does that suit you? or do you want him to be wearing nothing at all? I think you'd be more interested into the body issue? I'd have some of that.

I pictured Ron Swanson saying this out loud as I read it.
above pictures as sneakers. Most of them are sportier shoes or very casual sneakers. A few in there are the awful jeans + running shoe combo that not even DiCaprio can get away with, just awful.
are them out trying not to be seen. Purposely looking like shit, with a hat on, glasses, hoodie, shitty fitting jeans and sneakers arent what they would normally wear.
I actually feel bad for guys who don't or can't operate day-to-day in a pair of jeans and sneakers. Half of my career I've been saddled with the blight of business casual. It's truly awful. I can't stand the feeling of chinos, tucked shirts, belts, loafers yuck.
I've worked in tech my whole career in oil, fashion, and retail. The absolute worst was day-to-day working in a product and engineering department at an oil major and looking forward to 5 years of Fridays and the relief of jeans.
The souls of James Dean, Elvis, and Merle Haggard must cringe at the site of a guy in Dockers and a tucked polo.

but i would invest in some nice jeans with a good tapered fit(not nut hugging skinny jeans, but tapered so you don't have massive leg openings). remember good denim will last a long time, don't get sticker shock.
as for sneakers i'm a fan. my favorite are new balance models made in US or UK. comfortable, great materials, well designed. check out US MADE 997, 998, 1300, 1400, 574(These are mostly asian made, not as good quality and shape, still nice though), 990(earlier model style like the v1 and v2, the v3 is more techy looking)
UK made models 576, 577, 1500.
these sneakers look great with jeans in my book.
as for nike, you can't go wrong with all white or all black air force 1 lowtops. i don't care how old you are. adidas stan smiths in the classic white/green or white/navy colorways.

I manufacture discussions on here. Starting threads and doing my best to make people think. So far it is a success. Isn't that why this message board is called Big Blue Interactive ? You might want to step your game up and think twice before coming at me. Quit your whining and put your shovel to the dirt and start digging for once in your life. You don't know me.

We all know that you're a f*cking dupe and a troll. Get a life.
Jeans and lifestyle sneakers have been huge for 40 years, and becoming more ingrained even in the business world. After more than a dozen years working in financial services trapped in business casual khaki hell, I'm enjoying going to work every day in jeans and a pair of adidas. And a baseball cap for the commute home.

You really need to get a life. Noone was saying not to wear sneakers, ever. The OP was asking about a different look, and that is OK, some people have jobs or other situations. Jeez...this place sometimes ...

amen brother!!!
Nah, they're just cousins. 🥁
I rarely wear sneakers with jeans. Usually casual oxfords or loafers. I also rarely wear jeans unless casual Friday at work or out to dinner. I deal with the Florida heat 365 days a year so it's usually shorts on the weekend and on days off.
Totally agree. I told my wife half of these guys must not have a sack to be wearing some of these jeans today.
I'll bet the OP's concern about the person who levied the criticism of his jeans and sneakers look was a rocking hot babe...
Amirite?
Theres probably better places than BBI for fashion. Try Instagram with #mensfashion. Look online at NYT Fashion of the Times, or retailer websites. Or just take a walk around Chelsea if youre in the city.
So, you strut around in khakis every day?
Youre taking this golf thing way too seriously. Do yourself a favor. Go out and buy some jeans
LOL, it's so against all stylistic norms it's almost in style.

Well, golf has been my profession and passion for 30+ years. So, Im good. I hate the way jeans look and feel on me.
Come on, Rob. You have been on BBI long enough to know the bar is set pretty low for threads seeking fashion advice.

Those pants are from the derelicte line.
Ha ha
Khakis and sneakers is kind of bad too.
What's funnier is that many have justified the look. They are totally unaware that is a fashion faux pas with it's own name - Sneans. I wonder how many have been featured on this page.

Any shorts, with shoes and black socks, is over the line.
Way, way, over the line. Even I recognize that.

Good advice, but just a hair short of perfect.
The last part is, you have to iron your jeans.
my wife made me stop wearing the white New Balance sneakers. so you're wrong.
I guess when your dad wears a DOC-issued orange jumpsuit every day, that's a valid opinion.
I need to lose about 20 pounds to fit back into my Levi's 505's from the 90's. They're good quality and I'm saving them. My current Levi's and any other pants I buy now have to be at least 2-3 waist sizes smaller or they fall down and now half the jeans they make are stretch pants.

You're one of those barefoot runners, like the Kenyans? You got guts.
You must be in fantastic shape.

Haha! That too...
In my defense though, I have never been tempted to wear a fanny pack or a baseball cap.

My dad died when I was 4, clown.
But hey, I guess when you yourself get excited about OBJ wearing a dress at an art gallery show and twirling around for you, that's a valid for you.
By defintion, we already passed our genes on to the next generation. So who gives a fuck.

Whatever you say, Simo.
Full disclosure: I would not be mistaken for a fashion plate.

A-frikkin-men.
Personally, I try not to do it unless I am walking around the neighborhood for a little exercise...I do think it looks stupid if you wear, workout/running sneakers with jeans.
I just wear my Timberlands with jeans.
No shit.

Than someone else's opinion of my shoes/pants combination.

And by "no shit" I mean I agree.
I get the impression that most guys on this board look like this...
Ditto!

I get the impression that most guys on this board look like this...
I'm not a shirt tucker, but other than that I plead guilty....
Yeah those look pretty good.
PJ, on the manliness scale you keep mentioning, I'm guessing boots have to be more alpha than sneakers (assuming with the same non-beta husky cargo shorts).

I like those boots, but the skinny jeans and boots combo are what makes it beta.
Well, that and the fact that the guy in the picture looks like my daughter could kick his ass.
And the day jeans and sneakers cant be worn together, is a bad day...
Sneakers are fine if you dont care what you look like and/or are waking for miles.
I stand by every comment I've made in this thread and I weep for the male offspring some of you might have.
Almost as much as repeated use of "beta."
You seem to have a lot of disdain for fashion. If you really don't care as much as you claim to not care, why do you care what other guys are wearing?
Is there a classification that's even lesser than "beta"? Gamma maybe?
We're debating sneakers with jeans, yet athletes and movies stars are lauded for wearing some of the dumbest shit imaginable.
Say maybe Jonah Hill?
too skinny above? ok, fat Jonah Hll
yeah, but Jonah is funny. Ok Seth Rogen.
and more

You got it chief.

You also look to have spent quite a bit of time googling pictures to make a point.

Asked and answered counselor.
And this is who is issuing a critique on style.
TB12 falls on both sides on the ledger up there.
And PJ has a very wide definition of jeans (almost as wide as the pant leg in that one TB pic).
From other dudes on a football board. Detrimental.

He's going out of his way to be patronizing and making hints. As most people do when they're 12 years of age.

I pictured Ron Swanson saying this out loud as I read it.

Jake, from State Farm.
100% betas.
but i would invest in some nice jeans with a good tapered fit(not nut hugging skinny jeans, but tapered so you don't have massive leg openings). remember good denim will last a long time, don't get sticker shock.
as for sneakers i'm a fan. my favorite are new balance models made in US or UK. comfortable, great materials, well designed. check out US MADE 997, 998, 1300, 1400, 574(These are mostly asian made, not as good quality and shape, still nice though), 990(earlier model style like the v1 and v2, the v3 is more techy looking)
UK made models 576, 577, 1500.
these sneakers look great with jeans in my book.
as for nike, you can't go wrong with all white or all black air force 1 lowtops. i don't care how old you are. adidas stan smiths in the classic white/green or white/navy colorways.

You really need to get a life. Noone was saying not to wear sneakers, ever. The OP was asking about a different look, and that is OK, some people have jobs or other situations. Jeez...this place sometimes ...
