on a casual day to day basis, is that a fashion "faux pas" for men in their 30s and 40s? Why do most guys wear casually with jeans (or shorts) these days? I need to update my look based on some harsh recent feedback. Thanks
Fit is everything. As is the tupe of jean and sneaker. Im rocking Jordan 3s with Levis 513s at the moment. Likely it was the particular combo you were skewered for.
As long as you have money and can buy them things and take them places. In the south I ha e see. Some ugly dudes with crap style with some real hot wives and girl friends.

I rarely wear sneakers with jeans. Usually casual oxfords or loafers. I also rarely wear jeans unless casual Friday at work or out to dinner. I deal with the Florida heat 365 days a year so it's usually shorts on the weekend and on days off.

this. You can either look stylish or a clone of jerry Seinfeld circa 1992.
Of course you can wear sneakers and jeans. Just make sure youre wearing skinny jeans, or at least something with a narrow fit from the knee to the ankle, and yes, fat guys can and should wear narrow fit clothing (most of its stretch fabric now anyway). And wear some cool kicks, Nike, NB, doesnt really matter, make them comfy, but bright colors are in and if you can afford the special edition sneakers thats cool too. Try some narrow fit kahkis from the Gap or Banana Republic or J Crew. Tee shirts are fine as is a snug Oxford, long or short sleeve.
Theres probably better places than BBI for fashion. Try Instagram with #mensfashion. Look online at NYT Fashion of the Times, or retailer websites. Or just take a walk around Chelsea if youre in the city.
are the new business casual. People wear a nice pair of jeans (usually with shoes) and a blazer.
Almost all the people I know though wear jeans and sneakers for a more casual look.
As long as your jeans aren't skinny jeans - in which case you should kick your own ass - you can pick your choice of footwear. Casual shoes like loafers, boots like tims, winter boots, sneakers, whatever you want.
And who the fuck cares what anyone else thinks, I mean jeans and sneakers is not like this (socks and sandals):
I can picture all the dads here with their velcro new balance, jeans and fanny packs.
What's funnier is that many have justified the look. They are totally unaware that is a fashion faux pas with it's own name - Sneans. I wonder how many have been featured on this page.

to me, wearing anything but sneakers with jeans is weird. At what age does it become a "fashion faux pas" to be wearing sneakers all the time?

sorry forgot to paste after i cut my comment to move it around,
so you're telling me when you're running out of your house quickly u decide to wear slacks or loafers instead of sneakers? When i said "all the time" I didn't mean for all occasions, just casually

If you are running out of the house to go running or to the gym, then sneakers are appropriate. All other times, they are not. Now, it doesn't mean that you have to wear business dress shoes. It isn't a binary choice. Footwear comes in many styles. It is alright to have more than 2 types of shoes.
Life is different everywhere. I used to buy a pair of Nike air maxes every year when I lived in Jersey. My old pair would become my gym shoes. Now in Florida I just buy a pair of reefs every year. Have boat shoes and cotton clothes for fancier things that rarely come up here. Seattle you can wear dad shoes and flannel year round and nobody judges.
rocking runing shoes is a big no. classic jordans or adidas, chucks or vans your good. anything new balance you better be mall walking or going to the gym. then therea all 7000 vetsions of scetchers. anything with lobg cotton laces is probably a no go.
might argue its more important to wear proper, non dad jeans.
Are there are actually other things you can wear with jeans...
LL Bean Camp Moccasins as my casual shoe and Cole Haan Tucker Venetians at work. Both are very comfortable and I think they look fine, but my fashion sense isnt very good.
+1

Totally agree. I told my wife half of these guys must not have a sack to be wearing some of these jeans today.
I'll bet the OP's concern about the person who levied the criticism of his jeans and sneakers look was a rocking hot babe...
Amirite?

So, you strut around in khakis every day?
Youre taking this golf thing way too seriously. Do yourself a favor. Go out and buy some jeans
LOL, it's so against all stylistic norms it's almost in style.

Well, golf has been my profession and passion for 30+ years. So, Im good. I hate the way jeans look and feel on me.
Come on, Rob. You have been on BBI long enough to know the bar is set pretty low for threads seeking fashion advice.

Ha ha
Khakis and sneakers is kind of bad too.
