Listening to them, sounds like it might be a strategy (copying Rays). Green, meanwhile, is getting killed. Hook. Send him back down.

Pitch selection leaves a lot to be desired
PetesHereNow : 5/19/2019 1:47 pm : link
Yesterday, Cessa throws a breaking ball to Meadows and he Homer’s on a hanger.

Today, Green has a 1-0 lead and he tries to throw a breaking ball to Kiermaier and he hits it out.

Why are you losing on your weaker pitches?

Nothing wrong with the pitch selection, just location. Seeing a lot mistakes leaving the park and excuse me swings.

Aside from your unpleasantness, arniefaz makes a decent point: are there no intentional walks any more for hitters who are killing you?

Rarely done and do you walk a guy with two outs and nobody on? The one homer was a two strike count that is mind was a lunge at it swing. The second was a porch job, basically a pop up out in 29 other stadiums.

No, what you really have to laugh at is that you never get tired of completely embarrassing yourself.

Great win. What a run! This is a team to be proud of. I can’t believe they can even muster the energy to get out of bed in the morning with the way the shitty, overpaid analytics team, completely clueless manager and idiot of a GM have run this team into the ground...

Not as excited as if it were Judge, but yes I'll happy to see him back. Just to give Gardner and Frazier a break.
I was actually feeling Frazier has lost his mojo and needs a little time off or a trip to SWB.

But:
LeMahieu (2B)
Hicks (CF)
Voit (1B)
Stanton (DH)
Sanchez (C)
Torres (SS)
Ushela (3B)
Frazier/Maybin (RF)
Gardner/Maybin (LF)

is starting to look like a MLB lineup.
Yeah nice win for Jints dad today

Didn't see this about Judge: Won't be fully healthy this year.

Aaron Judge admits ‘obvious’: He won’t be fully healthy for rest of season.
Aaron Judge said it’s “obvious” he won’t be fully healthy the rest of the season while he deals with a strained left oblique, but he will return as soon as possible.

“You don’t have time to get all the way there,’’ Judge said Friday before the Yankees’ 4-3 comeback win over the Rays in The Bronx.. “It’s the season. You’ve got to get back. Once I’m healthy enough to get back in games, I’ll get back out there.”

He still hasn’t resumed baseball activities, and Carlos Beltran, a special assistant to general manager Brian Cashman, said Thursday an oblique injury like the one Judge suffered on April 20 will impact him all year. The two recently had a conversation about it.

Yeah saw that. Hard to believe you can play with a pulled oblique in any way, shape or form.

He's either a Major League ballplayer or he's not and with Stanton and Judge on the mend, this is the time to find out. Let Stanton and Judge take their time getting fully healthy. If it takes months to come fully back from an oblique injury, then give Judge the time so when it comes September and October we're not wondering what might've been if he was 100% for the playoffs. The replacements are doing well enough that nothing needs to be rushed.
LeMahieu...

There is absolutely no doubt that Torres is special. But he also has to stop making unnecessarily stupid throws especially with Luke at 1st. Luke is very much better picking balls out of the dirt this year compared to last, but he'll never be Mattingly or Tino. Yes some throws get away, but he needs to be certain on his throws and minimize the chance of a bad one.
Maybe a bit of a nit pick, but why take chances.
Voit remains a bad defender at 1st...

but it's night and day compared to last year. He's a (mostly) steady subpar defender this year, last year he was a butcher.

With Torres, I think a number of the errors come with him being in his early 20's and not having a ton of game experience. Give him 3-4 years and he will learn when to throw, when to hold, and how to "cheat" a step on defense. He will be fine- he just needs to play day in and day out. The skills are there- experience does the rest.

In Frazier's case, he needs to play. However, with Hicks back, Gardner not going anywhere, and Stanton soon to be back, it doesn't make a lot of sense to keep him in NY, where it might become a platoon situation.

If the injury plague did not occur, he would likely have stayed in AAA and received 300-400 ABs before getting called up.

Remember that the Yanks reworked his swing, but then he missed most of the season with the concussion. He needs ABs in a more controlled environment where the impact of an 0 for 4 isn't as big a deal as getting the swing right is.

Send him down and give him several hundred ABs and we'll see him in September.

I get the sense that Brett Gardner is looking to jack the ball over the fence. I seem to recall him being much more a slap hitter when he came up and for several years after that.

.

He ambushed the pitcher on the first pitch on his HR,
hoping Stanton is back by the end of the month.
At this stage, Gardner would be better off playing less.

Gardner has low-key been a really important player this year.

It's not that his performance overall has been anything to write home about - but with Hicks starting the year on the shelf and missing over a month, Judge and Stanton getting hurt and missing significant time, Frazier needing a quick IL stint - Grandpa Gardy just keeps answering the bell and has done everything asked of him. He's gone back and forth between LF/CF, he's batted basically everywhere from leadoff to 3rd to the bottom of the order, and he's had a knack for a well-timed HR.

He hasn't been our best player, but we've really needed to lean on Brett this year so far and he's been durable and done a really nice job. In retrospect, it's a good thing we brought him back.
Sure hope Gio Urshela is OK...
M.S. : 5/20/2019 9:59 am : link

...talk about taking one in the shorts.

Ouch!!!

Many years ago, a teammate did the same thing, but only worse. He fouled one off his in-step and somehow, some crazy way the ball also nicked the plate and rebounded right into the family jewels. He went down like a shot, and just for good measure sustained a fractured bone in his foot.

Gardner has been very important to the team for years, but one has to think this season is his swan song with the Yanks.

I would really like to see the Yanks keep Maybin around for a couple years as a 4th OF. He really isn't starter material, as the bat never developed like projected, but he does play everywhere defensively and has some speed left.

I think he would not complain about being the backup OF on a good team with playoff chances every year now that he is 32.
.
arcarsenal : 5/20/2019 11:27 am : link
I agree this year is the end of the road for Gardy here - not sure if he'll want to keep going elsewhere, but I'm sure the Yanks will decide it's time to move on - which will be the right timing and the right call.

But, for now, it's been nice to have him - we've really needed him. A lot more than anyone would have hoped, but the reliance on him should continue to wane with Stanton on the way back, Hicks already here and Frazier having earned consistent AB's before his injury. He's been ice cold since, but he's just got to keep fighting through it. I think he'll be fine.

I like Maybin - definitely more than Tauchman. And I wouldn't be opposed to him sticking around for depth. I guess what happens with Florial this year as far as when he gets back, how he performs in Trenton, etc. will also determine what the OF depth looks like going forward. I don't know how willing Cashman will be to move him - perhaps he's part of a deal for pitching help this summer if we go that route (hopefully not for Bumgarner... I don't think that's the right move)

I think to really appreciate Torres you have to compare him to Rosario who is a year older. They had similar prospect rankings coming up. Top 3-5 guys. Keith Law called Rosario the top prospect in baseball in 2017 and MLB.com had him at #2. He was suppose to have MVP talent. So far he has been a huge disappointment. His OPS has never reached .700 and he never developed the power Keith Law thought he would. I believe his WAR is the second worst for a starting IFer in all baseball this year to Travis Shaw but Shaw has the excuse he was probably playing hurt.
