82 degrees and partly cloudy at first pitch. Little to no chance of precipitation expected.
I can't believe that post about Cespedes.
https://www.nj.com/yankees/2019/05/its-official-yankees-giancarlo-begins-rehab-in-tampa-on-monday.html - ( New Window )
Just realized we only have one of our beloved 6:35p starts left (vs. SDP 5/28)
Then, we have to go back to the regular 7:05's.
@GeorgeAKingIII
Hank Steinbrenner was on hand in Tampa on Monday to watch Didi Gregorius play shortstop in an extended spring training game. In his first game action of this season Gregorius had five plate appearances, two hits and a walk. He handled three ground balls and made a throwing error.
More on the appearance in the link below.
Dellin:
@lindseyadler
Dellin Betances did 50 throws from 105 feet today. Will be throwing five days in a row (with various distances). He's not sure what the plan is for after that.
Judge:
@BryanHoch
Aaron Judge played catch and ran on the field today. Aaron Boone said that Judge continues to show progress, but he isnt ready to swing a bat yet.
Tulo started batting practice on the field, and has been taking grounders at SS and 3B.
Stanton on a rehab assignment in Tampa today.
Lotta promising things here.
Didi - ( New Window )
IMO Tulo was signed as a temporary fix, and is the odd man out when Didi returns as far as playing time goes.
Did goes to short, Torre back to second, DJ fills in as the ultimate utility guy. Spelling guys and playing every infield position during a week.
As far as next year, I think signing Didi is as close to a no brainer/must do as can be. He's clutch, well liked by fans and teammates, handles NYC, and is the total package on the field. Has good range with a solid glove, great arm, hits for power, drives in runs etc.
The Yanks love everything about him, and as long as he's healthy I think he's the every day shortstop going forward.
I think they want to keep him here - and I'd like to see him stay.
He's a big part of this team. As a presence and a player. And I think the front office knows that and hopes to have him here another 5 years or so.
Tulo will be gone after this year.
It'll be interesting to see what happens with Urshela the rest of the way and just how good he'll continue to be. If the dropoff isn't that stark, we'll have some decisions to make. But, we can cross that road when we get to it.
I think Estrada is legit. We're going to have a lot of infield options.
Also, is Bird just so far away that there are no updates? I literally couldn't care less if he comes back or not at all this year - I think they're probably pretty tired of the neverending injuries and him not really performing when he's been healthy for the most part. But we've been getting updates on guys like Judge who are still pretty far away... and there's just nothing on Bird.
He can play 1B, 2B and 3B.
On 1B days, we could DH Voit and put Stanton in a COF spot.
Could also put DJ @ 3B with Didi @ SS and Gley @ 2B.
I guess the squeeze comes if we try to play DJ @ 2B since it leaves SS and 3B for two guys who don't really play 3B.
The Yanks have actually had Gleyber play some 3B in Trenton and SWB, I believe. Not a ton, but he's played there. I don't know how comfortable they'd be putting him there at the big league level, but I'm sure he'd be better than Andujar was last year. So, that's probably a possibility.
I'm not even that worried about it, honestly. Just get Didi back and let the pieces fall however they will.
Not sure but when the ball bounces under your glove, you should have had it...Not a good play by Maybin.
Please stop with the Corbin crap. We don't have him. He isn't a Yankee and Cash didn't want him.
I think that was the plan when Miggy first got hurt but as well as DJ has been playing,Urshela has been just as good. He's making it hard to take playing time away from him.
I think they'll continue to give Gio playing time and ride him as long as he keeps playing this well.
Having one too many really good infielders is a good problem to have. Much better than one short, and I think with it being such a long season, it'll sort itself out along the way.
The Yanks have the best record in baseball since April 13th with basically half of their team on the shelf - and here you are, still criticizing all of their methodologies with the tired laptop/analytics jokes as if they're doing everything wrong this year.
It's fucking tiresome. Enough already. One trick pony.
You're the guy who was saying that Torres should get sent down 2-3 weeks ago because of how "horrible" he was. Meanwhile, he was in the midst of a hitting streak and is having a very good year to date. You sure you want to die on this hill where you act like you know better than the people making the decisions?
I'd advise against it - but I guess you'll just keep beating this dead horse all year no matter how much this team overcomes.
Fucking ponderous, man.
Happ is the fifth starter. He's never going to be lights out. That's not his job.
For all the talk, he is a -4DRS so far.
Your stupid ass just never stops, huh?
Your self awareness absolutely sucks. Among all of your other billion flaws. This absolutely has to be trolling at this point. There is no human on the plant this dumb. Is there?

on that cut. I think Gardner had him..

I have a serious problem with defensive metrics. What part of Urshela's game looks negative to you on the defensive side. Simply put, I am very suspect about defensive metrics. Simply too much subjective input.
Torres is a much better hitter than Vizquel, though.

I was going to say the same - the defensive metrics often don't line up with the eye test. I still think they have a long way to go.
A lot of offensive metrics are fantastic - ditto pitching peripherals.
But, the way defense is calculated doesn't really jibe for me. It's almost like you get penalized for being more rangy because you're "supposed to" get to balls that are further out. Guys who don't move well and are only expected to make plays within a small plot of real estate seem to not get those same strikes against them despite being lesser players in the field.
This has been a problem since the spring. I was worried about it then, but I hoped that it was just Happ being a vet and working on stuff, etc.
It appears it's still a major problem.
He can't get the ball in on righties.
Just way, way, way too many.
Nunez owns him. Thus him hitting cleanup.
or the Orioles
But, that was never a strike so he should never have offered...
I think I'd even take Cessa over Happ.
6-1 to a group of castoffs
He's basically had one of those each appearance. Easily the worst player on the team.
Happ has small blips of not being a league average pitcher in his prime. I dont expect any improvement when his stuff keeps declining and he cant seem to locate what he does have.
But on a night like tonight, when Happ doesn't have his sharpest command, he ends up just throwing a lot of hittable meatballs
He basically has "zero margin" stuff - meaning, if you miss your spot and you leave the ball in the zone, you're probably getting tattooed.
Some guys in this league have stuff that's so good, they'll get away with mistakes. Happ isn't that guy. He's got to locate otherwise he's just going to get absolutely crushed.
Get Hicksie in now.
I like the no-call.

He did but that is on Luke. Cost us another run.
I was feeling it with LV there but he chased outside the zone
1 run game.
Oriole Killer.
As Villar breaks off third, Urshela charges, Britton steps off and runs at Villar.
Base hit
LFG.
2nd and 3rd. No one out.
Let's gooooooooooooooo
His awareness on the DJ ground out was fun to watch too. He's just a brilliant base runner despite his speed (which isn't something to sneeze at)
FUCKING
GARY
Beautiful call.
This team is amazing.
We need Stanton and Judge back. They trio all going at it has been teased for over a year.
Nice call.
I was looking at all that room toward the 2B hole and just wanted him to punch it there....
He watched that ball all the way to the bat. If you see a replay, watch his eyes.
Romine would have hit it further.
Sanchez
Where you at haters?
Great call.

No reason to diss on Romine. Diss on the posters. Romine is a decent to good backup.

Agreed.
Huge huge win tonight. Glad to see our offense with another good game
Fantastic win. This team never quits.

There is too much shit given to Romine - almost as bad as Gary gets. Just hit me the wrong way. Sorry for the thin skin.
Oh well! Sucks to suck.
Thanks
I'm just busting the chops of those who were giving up on Sanchez last year - too many bad takes on him.
There are more than 25 teams in this league who would take Gary over their backstop in a second. Batshit that anyone would be that quick to give up on him.
Guy is just fucking mashing this year.
What a rollercoaster ride these first couple months have been with all the injuries, the tough start... the comebacks, the big innings. Fun as hell, though. Still in 1st place. Let's stay there.
Happ laid an egg, but the bullpen kept us in it while the offense chipped away.
For a team that has often been maddening with the all or nothing home run/strikeout offense, they're mostly having great ABs across the board lately. Big time tonight

Chopperhatch doesn't show up to bitch about him much anymore, huh
Happless.
But Yanks find a way!
Might see Stanton by next Weekend?
Is it me or does it seem that Didi is way ahead of schedule? They are talking some time in June for him now.
Boy when Didi comes back the infield picture gets clarified and muddled at the same time. I think at first he sees a lot of DH to lessen stress on the elbow. But still - Torres, LeMahieu, Urshela, Gregorios, plus Tulo is taking fielding practice.......
When Stanton gets back, what happens to Morales and/or Maybin. Does Clint go back down or do they release Maybin?
Hate losing any of these contributors.
Didi comes back, Thairo goes to SWB.
Stanton comes back, Clint goes to SWB.
That's my prediction, anyway. Guys like Maybin have no options, you would lose them and I don't think the Yanks want. Plus, even Clint would benefit from more regular ABs, I think.
Btw, anyone catch Sterling's call of Gleyber's 2nd homer? If you're one who finds his mistakes add something interesting to listening, then you'll love this one. The guy goes from calling a Torres double a walk off HR the other night to the opposite end of the spectrum last night.

The best case scenario was always around All Star break. The recent articles have indicated that the intent is to give him a full month of ABs to make it similar to spring training- plus with Torres' play, there is no real reason to rush him back before he is ready.
There will be a "dead arm" period in there somewhere- between the TJ and the normal stress you put on your arm when ramping up play after a long stretch off the field- better to have those days in the minors than in NY.
If he gets back in late June, that's about the best case scenario they laid out- and its good because that will be the equivalent of a trade deadline pick up.
I think that he has enough bat that when Didi returns, it might not be a bad idea to put him at 3B. Remember that when he was in the Yanks minors, they played him at 3B, 2B and SS because they were not sure where the opening would be, so this would not be a new thing to Torres.
Imagine an offensive and defensive INF of Torres at 3B, Didi at SS and DJ at 2B.

I think he probably has enough bat to play 3B as well but the guy is young and a big part of their future. I don't think you dick him around by playing him at 3B this year when Didi returns then back to 2B next year. Give him back 2B and make him a fixture there for years. (Unless of course they don't plan on resigning Didi)
I'd much rather have DJ be the guy who moves to 3B and be their utility guy on days he's not playing 3B. He'll get his 5-6 games a week between that and a DH day.
German tonight!!

I think it will work itself out fine with Andujar gone for the year. DJ will get AB's at 3rd, spell Gleyber once a week at 2b and play 2b when Gleyber moves to SS to give Didi time off there. Not to mention people always get hurt, especially this season. I think Morales and Maybin stick when Stanton gets back, Frazier gets sent down. If everyone is healthy when Judge gets back that when I think Maybin goes. BTW Judge was on the field doing some running/throwing last night before BP. No hitting yet.

DJ LeMahieu has been our most consistent player all year long. I don't EVER want to see him out of this lineup!
Another awesome win
Just saw the replay now. I'm not sure the pitch was that far out of the strike zone but it was high 90s and tailing in on his hands - very impressive that he got the barrel around so fast on it!
So, I'm thinking that's a player he very much is looking forward to having back in the lineup. Heck, we all are - it's hard to find anyone who doesn't love him.
Let's push that high watermark to 13 over tonight.
Yeah, that's a tough call though. Assuming Thairo goes back to SWB when Didi comes back (and even that's hard, because Thairo's proved his value so far), you have Urshela and DJM at 3B, Didi and Gleyber at SS, and DJM and Gleyber at 2B. Now that Morales is on the team he can play 1B when Voit isn't.
I think I remember discussion somewhere that Didi can also play 3B (maybe in connection with Machado potentially coming here), but I don't know if he ever has. If you keep Gleyber at SS as you suggest, Didi has to play somewhere regularly - he's not a sub.

A typical day for Stanton, a strikeout, HR, another strikeout, sounds like Giancarlo is in mid-season form.
Just had to laugh when I saw that. Maybe he's back by this weekend against the Royals.
Glad the offense bailed out Happ.
Facing the same team twice in 5 days,
advantage offense, even a team as bad as the odorous O's.
Does that mean a game or two once in a while as DH,
no it doesn't, but he is going to be the SS most days.
I also don't seem them moving Torres to 3B,
hasn't played there all year, don't see it.
More likely DJ moves to 3B, when Urshela has
a 'market correction'.
LeMahieu is not a sub; he has to be in the lineup. I'm seeing Torres at SS and LeMahieu at 2B.

I doubt it, they like what he brings off the field as
well to this team. He adds a lot of energy when he is around, I think they like how he interacts with the younger players. He just needs to prove he is healthy.
If he was like 32+, maybe a different story.

Is Frazier less of a clubhouse fixture than Yankee lore led us to believe, or is Eaton immature?
