NFT: Mickey Mantle

I know it has been around 70 years since his heyday and there have been great Yankee players and teams (and a legendary owner) since then but, ESPN did a pretty good job on his story - warts and all.

Thought some of the older folks might enjoy this if they haven't seen it yet.

I love that HBO is doing this with him and Mohammed Ali. Sure there has been plenty written/produced about both but The younger generation like my kids have never seen it and its great to bring them up once again.
Thanks.

I spent way too much of my precious nickels as a kid chasing the ever-elusive MM card.

Not to mention chewing that nauseating pink cardboard they claimed was gum.

As kids we would be playing stickball in the street while listening to the Yankee game on a tiny transistor radio. The only time the game stopped was for cars and when Mantle got to the plate. He was bigger than life for kids my age.

In a way Mantle was bigger than the Yankees

He was he perfect baseball player. Powerful, elite athlete, endearing smile. He came along as baseball became the dominate sport on TV. He made being a superstar look easy long before Michael Jordan did. He was the star of stars. In his time no one was bigger on any stage.

Growing Up in the 50s

Only Arnie and The Mick were my heroes.
Went to the Stadium on a Boyscout trip when I was about 8. Mick dropped a ball in center field top of the ninth to let the go ahead run in and struck out to end the game
When I was 15 or so my dad (Dodger/Mets fan) scored two tix 5 rows behind home plate Yanks / Aís (when they were in KC). Mick hit the closest fair ball to leave the Stadium that day.
Both days are burned into my memory for all time...
Closest Fair Ball NOT to leave

The Stadium...
Ball was still going up when it bounced off the facade and ended up on the field. Donít remember who the right fielder was, but I remember him picking it up.

Dam - if only he did not trip on that drainage pipe ... who knows what else he would have accomplished with a healthy body? I knew he had power but, never knew the early part of his game was speed?

What a swing ....
