He's a terrific runner, but he's not going to win games by himself any more than Barry Sanders did. We need elite QB play to advance and I'm hoping it will be this year or next.

Comments like this always drive me crazy. Football is the ultimate team sport. You need a well built team with talent to succeed. The Lions never one shit with Sanders because the rest of his team sucked.. Marino was an elite QB who never won the big game because his “team” sucked.

Enjoy watching Barkley, he’s a rare talent and who knows how long we will have to watch his greatness. We can win a championship with him if Gettleman builds the right team around him

The most successful era of the Detroit Lions since the 1950s, in terms of playoff appearances, was when Barry Sanders played for them. They made the playoffs about 6 times in the 90s.

I feel sorry for you. You do know it's a team game, right?

Sanders, despite playing for a crappy franchise, helped them win enough games to make it to the playoffs 5 times in 10 years! They've only made it back 4 times since he retired 20 years ago.

The last time Detroit won a playoff game, guess who was their RB? Barry Sanders.

You mean like a great running game didn't help the Cowboys win a bunch of games over the past number of years. And without elite QB play or offensive skill players as good as we have.

I've used that stat before and it is like most people don't care to listen.

Sanders definitely made the Lions better. Much more so than Scott Mitchell!! Those Lions teams actually played in January.

It is one thing to not have a historical perspective, but when people are intentionally ignorant about it - just foolishness.

...Barry Sanders did win games by himself. I mean to some extent he took crappy teams to be playoff teams and won playoff games. He couldn't win a championship by himself, just as no one can regardless of talent or position. The way to look at it is: Gettleman needs to assemble the right team to be competitive, but if he does that, THEN Barkley could absolutely be the superstar that puts the Giants over the top to win a title. I believe he is a Michael Jordan -level of talent, and although one player can't affect the game in football they way he can in basketball, that doesn't mean that one player can have ZERO effect on wins and losses if he's an elite once-in-a-generation talent.

Maybe not during his time as a Badger, either.

That lived in MI during the Sanders era that 1) he was amazing and they never had a really great line; 2) he was the only reason to watch them; 3) they had Wayne Fonts as coach and that was no Vince Lombardi, very much a good ol’ boy/schmoozer; 4) after Scott Mitchell played like 3 games as a fill in in Miami Detroit threw a big contract at him, and he was very mediocre; 5) Sanders walked away from football and chasing Payton’s record because he became convinced that Detroit was not trying to build a winner (getting rid of good players) according to his own bio.

Giants and Detroit are nothing alike. We may not do it right all the time, but I have no doubt DG is trying to build a winner and that’s always the aim of the owners.

I like the fact that the shortest path between the LOS and the goal line is a straight line. Far too often last year SB needed to bounce runs around the edges because the middle of the OL didn't do their jobs adequately.

Yes you did miss something: how awful the Giants' defense was. That had a lot to do with the lack of Ws too. Hopefully that has been addressed with everything but an impact MLB this year, if Golden returns to his 2016 version, and the rookies and Beal pan out.

Yes, you did miss something, but I'll try to clear things up for you.

What you're looking at is RB Saquon Barkley (the little guy carrying the ball, #26) running behind the Giants' recent free agent acquisition RG Kevin Zeitler (the big guy, #70). See, football is a team game, and a team that wants to run the ball a lot (like the Giants) can't just depend on their RB's, no matter how good they are. Those teams need to have a good offensive line, too, and if they don't have one, they'd better try and build one if they know what's good for them. So, it's not just about Barkley - it's about Zeitler, too.

Now, FYI, Zeitler, for all that he's a good run-blocker, is actually better thought of for his pass-blocking. Pretty cool, no? So, no matter who's under Center for the Giants, having Zeitler at RG will make life a little easier for them. It's much easier for a QB to be "elite" when he has a lot of time to survey the field. Sure, no one guy - Barkley, Zeitler, whomever - is going to win games all by themselves. But as I said earlier, it's a team game, and the more talent you have at every position, on both sides of the ball, should lead to more wins.

If that thought doesn't excite you, I don't know what will.

Let it go. Some people aren't going to get it no matter what. It could be LT out there on defense and Saquon out there on offense and they would complain about how [fill in the blanks] don't win games. Sports is a visceral experience. Not worth the time to explain it. Words have never made visceral real to those who choose to wear blinders.
