NFT: Nats at Mets Game 2. Wheelz

ZGiants98 : 5/21/2019 4:07 pm
Mets Lineup

Brandon Nimmo – CF
Jeff McNeil – LF
Robinson Cano – 2B
Pete Alonso – 1B
Todd Frazier – 3B
Wilson Ramos – C
Amed Rosario – SS
Carlos Gomez – RF
Zack Wheeler – RHP

Nationals Lineup

Trea Turner – SS
Adam Eaton – RF
Anthony Rendon – 3B
Juan Soto – LF
Gerardo Parra – 1B
Victor Robles – CF
Brian Dozier – 2B
Yan Gomes – C
Erick Fedde – RHP

Looks like Conforto has been symptom free for three days. Good news. hopefully, back soon. Taking a Font/Corbin win only goes so far if our REAL SP doesn't keep the pedal to the metal. Time for our SP to all pitch well a turn or two through the rotation. That would be nice. LGM!
Why is Todd Frazier hitting 5th?

Better question- why is he in the lineup?
Glad to see Nimmo back leading off

He's probably ben playing through it hurt the whole time. The neck was the original issue weeks ago.
McNeil is absolutely fine in LF.
ZGiants98 : 5/21/2019 7:54 pm : link
Little shaky at first back in ST but the dude is an athlete. He's good and he's adapted.
Wheeler's retired 10 in a row...
ZGiants98 : 5/21/2019 8:32 pm : link
He's cruising... Let's score some more.
Well fuck..
ZGiants98 : 5/21/2019 8:57 pm : link
113th pitch, one batter left to go before he's out of the game... and that happens.. Of course, our offense is completely absent tonight....
I just sat down to turn the game on
Chris684 : 5/21/2019 8:58 pm : link
and literally first pitch I see is Dozier homerun

Ugh
Classic Mets
ChaChing : 5/21/2019 9:04 pm : link
the W comes on a day as awful as yesterday

Then on a day w/ Wheeler pitching great, Frazier on an uptick at the plate...another young or struggling opponent's SP pitches great and NYM is behind basically all game. Just gotta hope they can get to the BP

In the mean time, 2 HRs while Wheeler hadn't given 1 up at Citi for ages, against a 0/37 vs NYM batter no less
JD!!!!!
Chris684 : 5/21/2019 9:08 pm : link
I love this guy.

If only he played more
Fuck yeah...

We can argue all day about the merits of Brodie’s moves. But the one unquestionably great acquisition is JD and Mickey doesn’t play him. Unreal

or along the side looking up...there's gotta be a good angle. Always thought so even for FGs just having a camera w/ an appropriate angle. Obviously doesn't happen a lot but getting an HR right is pretty huge
And JD Davis needs to play every day.
Section331 : 5/21/2019 10:05 pm : link
Trotting Frazier out there 4-5 days a week is managerial malpractice.
hopefully Davis can handle LF
Eric on Li : 5/21/2019 10:08 pm : link
that would be a big boost to his value. There's playing time for a righty who can hit in the OF.
speed and defense win games

happy for Rosario. If he can just get his glove going he's on his way to being a very good SS.

If Nimmo isn’t healthy, Frazier might be better than having Gomez in lineup.
I'd go...
ZGiants98 : 5/21/2019 10:35 pm : link
1.) Nimmo CF
2.) McNeil LF
3.) Alonso 1B
4.) Conforto RF
5.) Davis 3B
6.) Cano 2B
7.) Ramos C
8.) Rosario SS

For the rest of the year. Lowrie can be our super sub giving guys rest. Obviously Nimmo and Conforto need to get over their temporary injury stuff.
Release Frazier and Hech once Lowrie gets here (if he gets here)
ZGiants98 : 5/21/2019 10:38 pm : link
That would leave us a bench of Lagares, Gomez, Lowrie, Dom, and Nido.

Convince Mesoraco to come back and play in the majors also.

Feel like the SP is coming around although its still not really consistent. The bats worry me though. Too many players either not performing or hurt. (Cano, Ramos, Conforto, Nimmo, Lowrie.) Alonso and McNeil can't do everything. Even McNeil is cold at the moment.

Flip flop Rosario and Nimmo
And make Cano a sub. Put Smith in left
As bad as this season has been, I can't imagine how bad it would be

without Alonso.
So the 16 game streak that became 15 after the rain out
Chris684 : 5/22/2019 8:19 am : link
I think 11-5 was the target number when it got started.

Adjusted after the rain out and the inexplicable sweep in Miami, I think 9-6 is really the number you'd like to come away with. I wouldn't complain about 10-5 but that means winning out the rest of the week/weekend.

One game at a time. We need 2018 Jake tonight.
By "streak" I meant stretch
Chris684 : 5/22/2019 8:22 am : link
against Miami, Washington and Detroit.
MRI for Nimmo
Metnut : 5/22/2019 9:24 am : link
He's been awful this year so doesn't look like much of a loss at first, but given that Conforto is out, the OF is starting to look really thin.
Couple of things
gmen9892 : 5/22/2019 9:55 am : link
1) I will get roasted for it, but I think Frazier is finally starting to come around a bit. Have to remember he missed a large chunk of ST and has only now been playing for a full month. He has hit .400 over the last week. I don't hate having the guy around, at least until Lowrie is back. Then you reassess.

2) Been waiting for 2 months now for Cano to break out. It's getting VERY close to panic time. This offense needs him and if this is just what we get from him going forward, the trade looks like an utter disaster.

3) It's been said before, but it's scary to think about where this team would be without Alonso and Davis.

4) Just win one of the next two games and I am very happy about how this team bounced back from last weekend.

Despite his cold bat this season, Nimmo still has a substantially higher OBP than Rosario this season, which is the goal of a lead off man. And Rosario has been more productive when he bats 7th.
Rosario deserves a shot hitting #2 - a few reasons why:
Eric on Li : 5/22/2019 10:14 am : link
1. He's raised his walk rate for the 3rd straight year. His first year up it was just under 2% which was awful. Last year he near tripled it to just under 5% and this year he has improved further to 6%. Certainly not amazing but positive steps in the right direction.

2. He's increased all his batted ball metrics in a positive way. He is hitting more line drives, increased his hard contact for the 3rd year in a row, reduced his infield fly balls, and pulled the ball less/gone the other way more.

3. His numbers hitting #2 are solid. Obviously a small sample size but he's hitting .270 and he's got 3 walks in 37 AB's.

4. His speed and the fact that he's a righty should play well up there surrounded by lefties.

Last night his speed won the game, earlier in the season he got a big 9th inning walk, he's on pace for like 90 RBI's so he's clearly getting hits when it matters - all positive signs of a player developing. Time to give him a chance in a more prominent role IMO.

He needs to resolve his issues in the field though. He still reminds me very much of Didi Gregorius as a young player. All the athletic ability in the world but took a while to put things together. When he first got to the Yankees he made a bunch of mistakes in the field and fans crushed him but patience paid off.
So

the trade (not monumental, but still not good) winds up:

Mets trade:

Adam Hill
Felix Valierio
Keon Broxton

Nice job by BVW
Metnut : 5/22/2019 2:41 pm : link
to salvage something for the busted Broxton deal. Good GMs move on from mistakes and find a way to mitigate the damage.

yup $500k in international money isn't nothing and we move on
Eric on Li : 5/22/2019 2:56 pm : link
would have preferred to have had Broxton work out, but BVW is right when he says he was an intentionally duplicative player bc Lagares is always hurt. It will be annoying when Lagares is hurt and we are looking for another Broxton, but right now that's a risk they need to take.

Very good move. I should be surprised that a rebuilding team just traded away international bonus money but this is the Orioles we are talking about. That organization is the worst run in the entire league. They were the last ones to embrace analytics.
Sure Broxton
pjcas18 : 5/22/2019 3:11 pm : link
for 500k INTL pool money would be a decent deal if you didn't send three "prospects" for him 2 months ago. And I realize other than Hill none of the three was considered a prospect.

Also yes, moving on from a bad deal is admirable, but taking just 6 weeks to learn how wrong you were isn't an admirable characteristic.

admitting mistakes is most definitely a good characteristic
Eric on Li : 5/22/2019 4:42 pm : link
and by definition it takes a mistake to admit a mistake. Not making mistakes is certainly the ideal however.
